SUPERHEATER-BOILER.

To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. SNnnnoN, of Barberton, Summit county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Superheater- Boiler, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisl specification.
In the drawing I have shown a sectional. side elevation of one form of my improved superheater boiler.
My invention relates to the class of superheater boilers, and more especially to that type wherein the gases flow in up and down passes over successive sets of water tubes connecting upper and lower transverse drums.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and elicient superheater boiler of this type, in which the degree of superheat may be varied by varying the path of the gases over the superheating tubes.
A further object of the invention is to combine the U-shaped superheater with a boiler of this type, wherein the superheater occupies a pass of its own between any suitable baflles, with water-heating surface between it and the source of heat.
In the drawing, 2 and 3 represent upper transverse steam and water drums, connected by banks of tubes 4 and 5 with a transverse mud drum 6. The flame-and gases arisin from the furnace 7 are directed up among t e tubes 4 by the rear baffle 8,
4and thence flow down between such batlle and the baffle 9 and rise among the tubes 5 to their upper ends and then pass over the top of baffle 10 to the outlet fiue l1.
In the second pass for the gases between the baflles 8 and 9, I provide the superheater, which in this form consists of U-shaped tubes l2 connecting the upper boxes 13 and 14 placed in the roof of the setting. These boxes extend transversely of the setting, and the box 13 is connected with the steam space of the drum 3 by a pipe 15, the outlet pipe 16 for the superheated steam being connected to the other box 14. In this form the superheater is placed in the rear portion of the V-shaped space between the baliies 8 and 9, and at the upper part of the baille 8 I place the pivoted adjustable batl'le shelf 17 havin operating chain 18 leading up through t e roof to a drum on the shaft of Specification of Letters Patent.

The advantages of my invention result from the location of the U-sliaped superheater, from the means for adjusting the degree of superheat while the boiler is operated, and the compactness and efficiency of the construction.
Changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the boiler', the position of the superheater, the means for varying the path of the gases, &c., without departing from my invention.
I claim 1. The combination with a boiler of the transverse drum, multiple bank, serial pass type, of a superheater, constituting the entire heating surface of the second pass, and an adjustable baille shelf adjacent the bottom of the entrance to the pass arranged to vary the flow of the gases over the superheater; substantially as described.
2. A superheater boiler of the transverse drum, multiple bank, serial pass type, having the superheater located in a pass in the rear of the first pass, and in the normal path of the gases, and an adjustable batl'le adjacent the bottom of the entrance to the pass arranged in the pass with the superheater to vary the flow of the gases over the superheater tubes; substantially as described.
The combination with a boiler of the transverse drum, multiple bank, serial pass, type, having a triangular shaped pass in the rear of the first pass, a superheater set in said triangular shaped pass, and a swinging baille in front of the superheater in the normal path of the gases in said pass and at the bottom of the entrance to the pass, and external means for adjusting the swinging battle during the operation of the-boiler; substantially as described.
4.
