Description
D. F, .DODGE, O'F LOWVILLE,l NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 97 ,366, dated .November 3.0, 1869.
The Schedule referred 'to in these `Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may conce/rn Beit known that I, D. F. DODGE. of Lowville, inthe county of Lewis, and State of New York, have invented. a new and improved Double-Supply Attachment to Pumps; anddo.l hereby' declare that thef0llowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompapying'drawing, forming part of this specification. v
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved double-supply attachment to pumps. Figure 2 is a` Vertical transverse section of the same. Similar letters oi reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
The object of this invention is to provide a device,
by means of which water or other liquid can, from either one of two reservoirs, be guided to one pump. The invention will be particularly useful in households, where the same pump can be used to obtain water from a well and from aicistern, may be desired.
lThe invention consists in the application of a plug within a chamber, which communicates with the suction-pipe of' the pump, Iand with the two supply-.pipes leading to the two reservoirs. The plug has two apertures through it, either one of which can be brought in communication with the suction-pipe.l One aperture will connect 'one supply-pipe, and thel other aperture 4the other supply-pipe with the pump. A slight `turn oi' the plug will thereibre serve to bring either the cistcrn orthe well into connection with the pump.
A, in thedrmving, 'represents a cylindrical vessel, which has three tubular projections, B, C, and D, each at about right angles to the axis oi' the cyliinlcr. The tubes C and D are preferably on one side, and the tubeB on the opposite side ofthe cylinder.
Within the cylinder is arranged a plug, E, which is iitted into tight packings, and which has two transverse apertures, a and b, preferably` at right anglesto each other.
A handle, c, is attached to the outer end of the plug. v
In the cylinder may be formed an enlargedchaim ber, d, leading from the tube B to opposite the two tubes O and D.
The tube B is connected with the suction-pipe of the pumps, the tube C with a supply-pipe leading to a cistern or other reservoir oi liquid, and the tube D, with a supply-pipe leading to a wel! or other reservoir of liquid.
When the plug is in= the position shown in tig. l,
the aperture u is in line with the tube G and cham ber d, and connects, therciore, the pumps with the cistern, while, at the saine time, theI connection with the well is entirely closed. The pump can therefore be used to draw water from the cistern. A slight turn of the plug willbring the zn'n-.lrturc i in line with the tubes l), connecting the pump with the well, and closint,r the connection with the cistern.
The plug may be conical, as well as cylindrical, and, instead 0i' apertures, it may have grooves or channels, to connectthe suctionpipe with either one ofthe supply-pipes.
The tubular projections ot' the case A may be arranged on thc same side,- or otherwise placed in suitable manner.
Having thus describeiil my invention, l
` i claim as new, and desire to secure ny ALetters Patentp I The plug F, having two apertures, a. l), and arranged in a case, A, to connect either one of two supply-pipes with the suction-pipe of a pump, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose spocified.
