SIDE-DELIVERY EXCAVATOR.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louise, in the county of Wharton and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Delivery EX- cavators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in side delivery excavators and more particularly to that class of such machines as are used in connection with grading machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be light running and one which will carry the dirt away from the plows with the least possible resistance.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, eflicient, and one which will operate with a minimum of friction and one which will have but few parts to get out of working order.
ith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully set forth, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation an example of which is given in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, wherein:

The numeral 1 refers to a section of the plow frame which is carried by wheels 2 and which frame carries the plow 3. To this frame the conveyer 4: is suitably attached by means of braces 5 and 6. The conveyer is revolubly mounted in a ball bearing collar 7 which is hingedly connected to brace 5 at 8. A further support is had for this conveyer by placing a similar collar 9 at or near the center of the conveyer to which a supporting brace 10 and wheel 11 are attached. Brace 10 extends to the discharge end of said conveyer and strengthens it and when it is desired to raise the conveyer the strain will be more evenly distributed. Near the lowermost end of said conveyer a collar like spur gear 12 is placed and is preferably driven by a pair of small spur gears 13 which rotate conveyer 4 and which are rotated by motive shafts 14:- A number of flanges 15 are mounted within said conveyer, to the wall thereof, which flanges are longitudinally spiraled from one end to the other of said conveyer and are integral with the wall thereof. The flanges stand at, substantially, right angles to the wall of the conveyer and are limited in width so as to allow a tubular space around the longitudinal center of the said conveyer. This space may be enlarged or diminished by making the flanges narrower or wider as may be desired. The discharge end of said cylinder is provided with a number of discharges 16.
The operation of my device is as follows: hen the plow, which is attached to the frame 1, sinks into the ground the earth will be turned by the inoldboard of said plow into the lower end of the conveyer and carried toward the opposite end of the same by spiral 15 where the dirt will be allowed to drop out of the discharges 16. Fine sand and dirt thrown into the conveyer is held in the same until taken up by the spirals by means of rim 17, on the inside of and at the lower end of the conveyer.
\Vhat I claim is;
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame and a plow carried thereby, of a conveyer comprising a cylinder and a supporting frame composed of supports 5 and 6 and their respective collars 7 and 9 embracing the cylinder; an under support 10 taken in connection with its lateral brace, as shown and described; said cylinder being supported by said frame and disposed to rotate in said collars, the inner wall of said cylinder being provided with a helical flange spiraled around said wall longitudinally.
2. A side delivery excavator comprising a supporting frame and a plow carried thereby; a conveyer disposed to receive the earth from said plow, said conveyer including a conveying cylinder and supports 5 and 6 and their respective collars 7 and 9 embracing said cylinder and also including an under support 10 taken in connection with its lateral brace shown and described; the said cylinder being disposed to rotate in said collars and carrying upon its inner Wall a helical flange longitudinally spiraled there around and a rim carried by the inner Wall of the lower end of said cylinder, adjacent to the plow from which said conveyer receives, for retaining the contents of the cylinder until taken up by the said flange.
