To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER A. STUERMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Rock Rapids, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinged Harrow Draw- Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of drag harrows which are made up of a plurality of sections; and the present object of the invention is to provlde a flexible draw bar made up of a number of sections equal to the number of harrow sections employed for the purpose of enabling the device to be conveniently folded to pass through gates and other obstructions which would not admit of the passage of an inflexible draw bar.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of the harrow draw bar of the character outlined above.
With these and other ends 1n view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preIerred embodiment of the invention; it being however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to if desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a harrow constructed in accordance with the invention and embodying three sections. Fig. 2 is a top plan view slightly reduced showing a harrow comprising four sections. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing one of the intermediate sections of the draw bar detached. Fig. 41 is a perspective view illustrating two hinge members of the improved device separated. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the two hinge members.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved harrow draw bar is made up of a plurality of independent sections, namely two end sections A-A and one or more intermediate sections each designated by B. Each of the end members consists of a triangular frame comprising a body bar 1,
a diagonal bar 2 and a connecting bar 3. Secured upon the outer end of each body bar 1 is a clamp or reinforce member 4, said clamp being secured upon the body bar by means including an eye bolt 5. Secured upon the inner end of the body bar 1 is a hinge member 6. The outer end of the diagonal member 2 extends through a flange 7 which projects diagonally from the clam member a, and to the inner end of the diagonal member 2 is secured a hinge member 8. The connecting bar 3 joins the body bar 1 adjacent the inner end of the latter and is disposed approximately at right angles thereto, said connecting bar being connected with the hinge members 6 and 8 by means of nuts 9. An eye bolt 10 extends through the body bar 1 near the inner end of the latter.
The hinge member 8 of each end section may consist of a solid casting which is apertured for the passage of the connecting bar 3; the hinge member 6 is preferably rabbeted upon the body bar 1 with which it is connected by fastening bolts or pins 11, the opposed faces of the hinge member and the body bar being grooved to form an aperture for the passage of the connecting bar. In this manner the end sections are constructed in a solid and durable manner. Each of the intermediate sections B is composed of front and rear bars 12 and 13 which are connected together and spaced apart by means of diagonal bars 1 1. I-Iinge members 15 are rabbeted and firmly secured upon the ends of the bars 12 and 13 and said bars are connected adjacent to their ends by means of connecting bars 16 extending through apertures 17 which are formed by grooves in the opposed faces of the connecting bars and the hinge members, the grooves in the latter being clearly indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The front bar 12 of each of the sections B is preferably equipped with a clip 18 for the attachment of links or rings 19 with which the draft evener may be connected in the usual manner. These clips 18 are actually utilized, however, only when a four section draw bar is used, as shown in Fig. 2. The rear cross bars 13 of each section B are equipped with eye bolts 20.
The hinge members 6, S and 15, which have been herein described as being connected with the end sections and with the intermediate sections of the draw bar, may be of any suitable construction with the reservation that the hinge members connected with the right hand section A must be capable of inter-engagement with the hinge members of the left hand end section A and also with the hinge members 15 at the right side of each intermediate section B, while the hinge members 15 of the left side of each section B must be capable of inter-engagement with the hinge members 15 at the right side of any intermediate section B and also with the hinge members of the left hand end section A. To this end the hinge members connected with the right hand end section and with the left end of each intermediate section have each been shown as provided with two arms 25, while the hinge members connected with the left hand end section and with the right end of each intermediate section have been shown each provided with a single arm 26 adapted to extend between the two arms of the hinge members previously mentioned. The arms of the several hinge members are apert-ured as shown at 27 for the passage of hinge rods or pintles 28, which latter are provided at their front end with eyes 29, the rear ends of said rods being threaded for the reception of nuts 30 to enable the several sections to be conveniently assembled or separated according to the number of harrow sections in connection with which the draw bar is to be used.
It will be obvious from the foregoing de scription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that when it is desired to use a harrow consisting of only two drag sections, the end members AA may be hingedly connected by means of a single hinge rod 28, as the drag sections, some of which have been shown in Fig. l where they are designated by C, may then be connected with the eye bolts 5 and 10 of the body bar 1 of such end sections. Then a three section harrow is to be used a single intermediate section B is interposed between the end sections Arand then the middle drag section is attached to the eye bolts 20 of such intermediate section. IVhen the three sec tion harrow is used the draft links 19 are preferably connected with the eyes 29 at the front ends of the hinge bars or pintles 28. For a four section harrow, an additional intermediate section B is inserted, and the draft will then be connected with the clips 18, the latter being found necessary only when the four section harrow is used; harrows of five or more sections arranged side by side being rarely, if ever, employed.
It will be seen that by this invention I provide a draw bar or draw frame of simple and efficient construction composed of a plurality of units according to the number of drag units that it is desired to use in the harrow. The draw frame units, being flexibly connected together by the hinge members herein described, are capable of being folded upon one another as well as the drag units of the harrow, thus enabling the device to be carried through gate openings of relatively narrow width. The device may be conveniently'assembled or dismembered; it is inexpensive of construction and is capable of being stored in small compass when not in use.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 2-- 1. A device of the character described comprising two end sections each consisting of an approximately triangular frame including a body bar, a diagonal barand a connecting bar, the latter being disposed approximately at right angles to the body bar,
hinge members connected with the body bar and with the diagonal bar adjacent to the connecting bar, the latter being extended across and connected with the hinge members, and a clamp secured upon the body bar and having an extending flange apertured for the passage of the diagonal bar which is connected with said bar.
2. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith two end sections each equipped with hinge members adjacent to the inner end thereof, of an intermediate section comprising front and rear bars disposed in parallel relation, diagonal brace bars connecting the same, hinge members se= cured upon the ends of the front and rear bars, said hinge members and front and rear members having opposite grooves forming apertures, and cross bars extending through said apertures and havingnuts abutting upon the front and rear sides of the front and rear bars and of the hinge members connected therewith.
8. In a device of the character described, two end sections each consisting of right angle triangle frames having hinge members adjacent to their inner ends, an interme diate section consisting of a rectangular frame having hinge members adjacent both ends, said end sections and intermediate sec tions being each equipped with eye bolts for the attachment of harrow sections, and hinge bolts serving to connect the hinge members of proximate sections, said hinge bolts being provided with eyes at their front ends.
