To all whom it may concern.'
l Be it known that I, HARRY A. VVE'rMoRn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anthon, in the county of 1Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of harrows and diggers, and has for an object to provide a harrow comprising a plurality of sections loosely connected to a draw bar, each section comprising a plurality of tooth carrying elements hingedly connected to each other so that in movement of the harrow the said elements are free to move to adjust themselves to irregularities of the surface of the ground.
A further object of my invention is to provide the sections of the harrow and to construct the said means so that the swinging movement with respect to each other of the elements will be limited to prevent buckling of the harrow sections and to prevent the elements of a section overlapping cach other.
Other objects and advantages will be apA parent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, forming a. portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :#-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a harrow. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail. section through one of the elements forming one of theharrow sections showing the connecting members. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the elements of one of the harrows showing one of the intermediate connecting members. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a further modified form of my invention. Fig, 7 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 4, showing one of the front connecting members. Fig. S is a perspective View of a p0rtion of the draw bar. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the coupling members for the rear elements of the harrow sections.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a harrow 1 comprising a draw bar 2 provided upon its inner side with spaced blocks or elements 3 provided with vertically disposed grooves 4 for receiving the adjusting bolts 5 carried by members G to which are connected flexible connections 7 to be connected to a draft animal. The draw bar .is provided with a plurality of horizontally disposed eye bolts 8 t0 which are connected hooks or the like 9.
Harrow sections are indicated at 10 and 11 and are each formed of front and rear bars or elements 12 and 13 disposed in parallel relation to the draw bar, and intermediate bars or elements 14. rlhe front bars or elements 12 of the harrow sections are provided adjacent to their ends with connecting members 15 preferably formed of metal having a portion 1G provided at its outer end with an eye 17, a rearwardly directed portion 18 having an eye 19, and an intermediate connecting portion 2O disposed at an upward angle with respect to the portion 1G and extending in an opposite direction thereto. It will be seen that the construction is such that the eyes 17 are cngaged by the hooks 9 carried by the eye bolts 8 of the draw bar 2. The bars 12 are 'provided with transversely extending grooves 21 in which are seated the portions 20 of the connecting members 15 so that the upper surfaces of said portions 20 lie fiush with the upper surfaces of the bars or elements 12. The construction or formation of the portions 2O of the connecting members 15 is such that the bars or elements 12 lie with respect to the surface of the ground at such an angle that the teeth 22 are angularly disposed as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The intermediate bars or elements 14 of the harrow sections are identical in construction to the bars or elements 12 but as shown, these bars or elements carry connecting members 23 identical in construction to the members 15 with the exception of the hooked front ends 24 to engage the. eyes 19 of the members 15. The members 23 are also provided with rearwardly directed eyes 25 to receive the hooked ends 24 of the members 23 directly behind the ones at the rear of the bars or elements 12. r1`he intermediate bars have their elements pro vided. with horizontally disposed stops 26, and the members 15 are provided with similar stops 27 The rear bars or elements 13 are substantially the same in construction to the bars or elements 12 and 14, but as shown, the connecting members 28 are somewhat different in that they are only provided with attaching .portions 29, and the forwardly extending portions 30 provided with hooked ends 3l to engage the eyes Q5 at the rear ends ofthe members 23. The construction herein set forth and described embodies a harrow in which the sections thereof may be conveniently assembled or disassembled and folded when not in use to lie in a compact manner, but as shown, when in use the barsl or elements l2, 13 and 14 are eltectively held in their operative positions by providing the connecting' members l5 and with stops 27 and 26 to engage the shanks of the hooks :24 and 31 to effective-ly prevent buckf ling or overlapping of the bars or elements as will be readily understood.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 6, the connecting member embodies an attaching portion 32 having a rearwardly directed portion 33 provided with an eye 34. rlhe attaching` portion 32 is provided with a forwardly extending portion or arm 35 having a hooked end 3G and adjacent to the said hooked end, the portion or arm is provided with a stop 37. It will be seen that the only dilference of this form of my invention is that the forwardly extending' portion is provided with the stop 37 instead ot locating the stop upon the rearwardly extending portion 33.
In the form of my invention shown in F ig. 5 the connecting member 38 is somewhat similar in construction to the one shown in Fig. 4, the difference being in the construction of the connecting portion 39, which in this instance, has formed integral l l l r l i inbefore described.

A harrow comprising a draw-bar, harrow' sections located rearwardly of the draw-bar and comprising front, rear and intermediate parallel spaced tooth-carrying bars, members on the bars ot' the front sections pivoted at their forward ends to the said drawbar, members on the bars ot' the intermediate sections, the said members of the intermediate bars being pivotally connected together and those on the front bars of the said intermediate sections being` pivotally connected with the members of the front bars, members on the rear bars pivotally connected with the members on the rear bars of the intermediate sections, the said members on the front., rear and intermediate bars having portions extending upwardly and rearwardly to support the said bars at an inclination to the surface ot' the ground, and co-engaging hook and stop portions on the members of said bars for limiting their pivotal movements.
