FILLING-REPLENISHING LOOM.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DRAPER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Re lenishing Looms, of which the following escription, in connection with the accompanying drawin s, is a specification, like characters on the rawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to filling replenishing looms wherein a fresh supply of filling is furnished at desired times.
The aims and objects of the present invention are more particularly to provide means for controlling the filling ends which lead from the filling carriers as they progressively move to the transferring position, and these matters will best be understood from the following description and drawings of one form or embodiment of means for carrying the invention into practical effect, it being understood that the invention is not limited nor circumscribed by the details of structure illustrated and described, but in its true scope is definitely set forth in the claims.

The loom frame A; the breast beam B; the lay C;'the transverse shaft D; the finoperated by the usual means well understood in the art; the transferrer dog F pivoted tothe arm H of the transferrer; the
transferrer I and the hunter G for actuating the transferrer through the dog F, in the manner well understood by those skilled in the art, may be of any usual or desired character and need no further description.
Mounted upon suitable brackets 1, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, supported from the loom frame is the shaft 2 to which is secured the disks 3, 4 having suitable receiving portions, as 5, 6, Flg. 3, for the base and tip of filling carriers 7, which may be of any usual type employed 1n such looms. Extending upward from the group of carriers 7 which are p0- sitioned by the disks or separating arms 3, 4 for transfer to the shuttle beneath, is a hopper 8, Figs. 1 and 2. This hopper may be of any usual or desired character and is adapted to support a column of filling carriers, as indicated in Fig. 2, said filling carriers gradually moving downward in the hopper 8 into position to be engaged and separated from each other by the disk elements 3, 4, said disk elements being of any desired character to properly separate the filling carriers as they move to the transferring position, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The hopper 8 is provided with a slot 9 extending the full hei ht of the hopper, and when a charge 0 fillin carriers is placed in the hopper the fil mg ends 10 leadlng therefrom, Figs. 2 and 3, are passed through the slot 9 and so held that when a carrier has reached transferring position over the shuttle, and is transferred, in the usual manner, by the transferring mechanism, the filling end leading from the carrier will be in such position that on movement of the shuttle the filling will be drawn from the filling carrier and the shuttle be enabled to assume deliverable control of the filling. It is desirable to so holdthe filling ends relative to the top of the shuttle box that the filling between the carrier and the held end will be in position to be en aged by the shuttle so that, when the sliuttle moves, the filling may .pass into the usual threading mechanism of the shuttle and be thereafter controlled in its delivery from the filling carrier, as well understood by those skilled in the art. As the filling carriers move downward in the hopper 8, it is evident that the filling ends 10 from said filling carriers, if held at a point exterior and means are contemplated by the inveni tion for overcoming this obi filction and at the same time for holding the ing ends in the desired position Mounted on the shaft 2, Figs. 2 and 3, which is extended from the brackets 1, and suitably supported by a bracket arm 11, 1s a wheel 12, having a roughened or felt covered surface 13. Mounted on the bracket arm 11 and depending therefrom is a stem 14, Figs. 4, 5 and 6, carrying at 1ts lower end a roughened surfaced roll 15 normally held in engagement with the wheel 12 by means of a spring 16 interposed between a guide bracket 17 supported from the bracket arm 11 and an adjustable collar 18 mounted on the stem 14 and secured thereto in adjusted position by means of a set screw 19, said stem being guided in its movement responsive to the spring 16 by means of the guide bracket 17 and a similar guide bracket 20 near the upper end of said stem 14, the construction being such that the roll 15 is normally heldby the yielding action of the sprin 16 in engagement with the wheel 12, as wi 1 be readily understood from Figs. 4, 5 and 6. Depending from or supported by the bracket arm 11 is a guide piece 21, said guide piece preferably, though not necessarily, carrying the guide brackets 17 and 20, as indicated, and terminating at its rear portion with a guiding edge 22 furnishing a recess or shoulder 23 and a further depending part 24. In order that the roll 15 maybe further guided in its movement toward and from the wheel 12, the guide piece 21 may be provided at its lower portion with a frontwardly extending table part 26, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and said part 26, together with the part 24, may be provided with slots 25 into which the supporting journals of the roller extend. The ends 10 of the filling, leading from the filling carriers in the hopper and from the filling carriers controlled by the filling carrier separator 3 and 4, are taken together or' bunched and passed, as indicated in Fig.1, under the shouldered part 23 of the piece 21 and then between the wheel 12 and the roll 15, the ends of said filling, if desired, being then directed over an arm or support 27, Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
From the construction described as one form of the invention, regardless of the character of the hopper, or of the filling carrier separator or of the transferring mecharelative to the shuttle box and shuttle, as will now be described.

If the surface movement of the take-up rolls is the same as the movement of the filling carriers toward transferring position, which will be the case when the size of the wheel or roll 12 is the same as the separator 3, 4, it is evident that all slack filling produced by movement of the carriers to transferring position will be taken up by the means described. If, on the other hand, the surface movement of the take-up rolls is greater than the movement of the filling carriers toward transferring position, which will be the case, in the illustrated form of the invention, when the wheel or roll 12 is larger than the separator 3, 4, then there will be a relative slip of the roll surface over the bunch of filling ends, which will cause the roll surface to act upon any individual filling end that may have become slack by turning of its carrier in the hopper or otherwise, and take up such individual slack.
In the present embodiment of the invention the filling carrier separator 3, 4 has been illustrated as of a rotary character, therefore, as the' filling carriers come down the hopper 8 and are engaged by the filling carrier separator, they move downward to transferring position on the arc of a circle so that the slot 9 in the hopper 8, where it guides the filling ends adjacent the filling carrier separator, is curved on the arc of a circle, as indicated at 28, Fig. 1, it being understood that at this portion of the hopper the edge of the bracket 1, as indicated in Fig. 3, may serve as one wall of the guiding slot 9.
Obviously the invention is not circumscribed by the character of the filling carrier separator or by its rotary movement, nor is it'limited to any special means for actuating the wheel 12, it being understood that the invention is generic in character, as pointed out in the claims. It will'also be obvious to those skilled in the art that the wheel 12 and its cooperating roll 15 may be differently disposed and differently formed, within the true scope of the in-' vention, as applicant believes he is the first to provide in a filling replenishing loom any means actuated for rogressively taking up the slack of the filing ends extending from the filling carriers as they move in procession toward the transferring posi- The separating elements 3, 4 by which in the portion 10 of the filling between the crease the filling carriers are directed to transferring position may be formed either as part of a filling feeder wherein the filling carriers would be held, or they may be formed merely as positioning members to separate and position the filling carriers as they move by gravity into transferring position. In any aspect of the case the invention herein is intended to be unlimited by the character of the separating or positionin elements.
Vhen the hopper is formed with a slot 9 for the filling ends, the walls of the slot are liable to come together under some conditions and, clamp with the filling ends leading therethrough. This is especially the case where the hopper is formed of light material, or is made to hold a large number of filling carriers, but, obviously, regardless of size or details of structure, any great vibration of the loom or carelessness on the part of the operatives will be liable to cause one part of the hopper to be deflected from its true position and close the slot 9. On the other hand, it is essential that the slot be maintained in such condition as not to interfere with the proper descent of the filling ends as the filling carriers move in procession to transferring position and as the filling end take-up acts, as described. The present invention contemplates means to maintain the slot 9 in normal open position at all times and yet not interfere with the convenient loading of the hop er. As one form of such means, one of t e side walls of the hopper, preferably near its upper portion, is provided with a slot closing preventer one simple form of which is shown as a lug or projection 90 formed on or connected to one wall of the hopper and extending toward the opposite wall of the slot 9, the construction being such that any vibration or shock tending to close the slot 9 and thereby clamp, break, or otherwise interfere with the proper delivery of the filling end will be prevented, as will be readily understood.
As hereinbefore noted the form and general character of the take up for acting upon the filling ends leading from the filling carriers in the hopper maybe variously changed or modified and may be actuated by any suitable means to take up the slack in the filling ends. In the form of the invention illustrated, the take-up is actuated by the movement of the filling carriers toward transferring position, and while this is found to be one convenient way for operating the take-up, yet it is to be understood that the invention contemplates actuation of the take-up by any means and obviously also or otherwise interfere the actuating means that ma be employed in any particular case.
