'l'he tilling ends extend in a downward and outward direction from the filling carriers eithci' to a take-up or other device, and, in the absence of any means to maintain proper tension ,on the fillin ends, tli'ose ends leading from the upper ling carriers are liable to become entangled with the tips of filling carriers below, so that such entangled filling end betaunes broken when the filhn carrier with which it is entangled is trans errcd to the shuttle. This may happen even where a take-up is used to act upon several of the filling ends for the purpose of taking up the slack as the carriers move toward transferposition, because more slack will occur ring in he ends leading from the upper carriers in' the hopper than from the can-icrs lower down in the hopper and non uently more nearly in horizontalrelation with the takeup. With these facts in mind the resent invention contemplates a control of tie filling ends themselves, regardless of whether they pass to a take-upor to a fixed int exterior of the hopper, to the end tha not only may they be protected from the pounding or rubbing action which is liable to weaken them and be held from entan 'lement with the tips of filling carriers be ow, but unwinding of the filling from the carprevented even where the filling ends are under the action of a take-up. One form of a eimnle expedient to these ends is shown by Figs. 2 and 3 of the draw mg, wherein the inner surface of the wall of the hopper adjacent the tip )ol'tions ofthe filling carriers 36 is provi ed with a" lining 37 of felt or other suitable yieldin v or fibrous material. Rotation of the filling carriers in the hoph r is obviously objectionable, becausc'therceither too much slack is produced in the fi lin ends leading therefrom, or such filhn endsiieco the carriers and bro en. Experiment and practical experience has shown that when the base portions of filling carriers have an me wound u n the tip portions 0 its extended area or line of contact with the adjacent wall of the hopper, much rotation of thefllling carriers occurs, due t9 the loom vibration, but where such contact is reduced, less rotation is observable.
