To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NETTIE BARRE'rr, a citizen of the United States, residin at Mount Sterling, in the county of Ma ison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canning Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in devices of thatcharacter which are adapted to support a plurality of cans containing fruits, vegetables, and the like to be cooked by steam, the device being positioned within a boiler or other suitable receptacle which. is partially filled with walter, the steam rising therefrom cooking the contents of the cans.
A. further object is to provide a can-holding frame which is collapsible and when not in use may be readily folded and stored` away.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of frame base which 1s formed from a single length of wire, the s ace inclosed thereby being divided by a p urality of intersecting wires and adapted to receive bottles in the spaces thus divided to support the bottles while filling the same with grape juice, cider or other material to be preserved.
A still further object is to provide a knock-down frame having bail members at its ends, said members having loops formed in their vertical 'portions to receive the downardly extending corners of a removable can-supporting frame, the base of said frame having a downwardly extending loop at each of its corners to sup ort the same, said bails being pivoted to the ends of the base frame.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichj Figure l is a vertical section through a boiler showing the support positioned therein; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed; Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary view of one corner of the can-supporting frame and a portion of one of the ball members, showing the same detached; Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the corner of the -bail or handle port-ions 11.

Referring to the drawings 5 indicates a boiler which may be of any suitable construction and is provided with a removable cover 6. Within the boiler my improved can-supporting frame is adapted to be positioned. rThis frame comprises a base member 7 which is formed from a single len h of wire bent into substantially rectangu ar form. At each of the corners. of the base member the wire is bent downwardly and looped as shown at 8 to rovide suitable supports which are adapted to dispose the base frame above the bottom of the boiler when the device is in position as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The space inclosed by the boundary wire of this frame is divided by a plurality of intersecting wires 9 to provide a convenient number of smaller spaces which are adapted to receive and support bottles or preserving jars so that the same may be conveniently filled with fruit juices or the like which it is desired to preserve.
To the ends of the base frame and adjacent to each of its sides, the ends ofi` the ail wires 10 are pivotally connected by coiling the same thereon. The central portion of these wires is bent to provide the The parallel vertical portions of the wires 10 are bent uponl themselves or looped as clearly shown at 12 in Figs. 3 and 4. These loops are adapted to receive the corners of a rectangular can-recelving frame 13. In order to provide suitable means for connecting the corners of the frame to the bail wires, the boundary wire of the frame 13 .is downwardly bent at its corners and formedwith a loop 14. The end ortion of this loop is compressed or broug t together to form a somewhat contracted portion 15. The oppositely bowed wires which comprise the loops 14 are capable of compression thus providing a resilient member which when the same is inserted in the loop 12 of the bail wires will prevent the accidental disengagement of the frame 13 therefrom. It will be noted from reference to Fig. 1 that the loops 14 are somewhat curved longitudinally and have their ends 15 engaged with the bail wires. When it is desired to move the frame 13 considerable force must be exerted tocompress the loops 14 so that the same may be drawn through the bail loops 12. The space inclosed by the wire of the frame 13 1s likewise divided into a plurality of smaller spaces by the cross wires 16 in a similar manner to the lower base frame 7, the only difference being that a smaller number .of divisions is rovided. When the device is in position within the boiler, the cans are placed'in the frame, and are supported upon the base member 7, the upper ends of the cans extending slightly above the upper frame member 13. The boiler is partially filled with water and the steam which rises therefrom will perform the greater portion of the cooking operation.
In Fig. 6 there is illustrated another form of the can supporting frame, which differs from that shown in Fig. 2 only in the rovision of a greater number of divisions which are, rovided by the intersecting wires 16. therwise the construction of this form of the frame is similar to that previously described.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have rovided a device which is particularly a apted for use in canning and preserving fruits or vegetables. Heretofore it has been customary to place the cans within the boiler, but to insure the cans retaining their upright position therein, the boiler had to be entirely filled whether there was suiiicient material to fill all-of the cans or not. By means' of the device above set forth, a smaller number of cans may be positioned in` the boiler and more satisfactory results will be obtained as greater space is provided for the circulation'of the steam about the cans. When it is no longer desired to use the support, the upper can-receivin frame 13 is removed and the bail mem ers 10 folded inwardly and downwardly upon thel base frame 7. rIhe entire device may then be compactly arranged and laid away for future use. The holder is completely constructed of wire which would preferably be formed of steel or galvanized ironsuitably treated to render the same non-corrodible. It will be obvious that owing to the extremely simple construction of the frames and bail members, the device may be vmanufactured and retailed at an extremely low figure. It is, however, strong, rigid, and durable in its construction.
It will be understood that numerous minor modifications may be resorted to in regard to the form, proportions and details of construction without de arting from the essential features or sacri cing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base frame, said frame com rising a boundary wire formed of a singe length of material, said wire being bent into substantially rectangular form and provided with downwardly bent loops at itsV corners to form supporting feet, crossed wires secured between the boundary wires and adapted to divide the space inclosed thereby into a plurality of spaces of equal size, a bail member pivotally secured to each end of said frame adjacent to the loops, said bail members comprlsing the vertical parallel portions and the curved connecting bail portions, the vertical portions being bent to provide laterally extending loops, said loops extending inwardly, and a can-supporting frame formed from a single length of wire, said wire bein downwar ly extended at the corners of t e frame and adapted to be removably positioned in the loops of said bail members, the space inclosed by said frame wire bein divided into a plurality of smaller spaces y intersecting wires secured to said frame' wire.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base frame having supporting feet at its corners, said frame coniprisin a boundary wire, the sides and ends of sai frame wire being connected by a -plurality of intersecting wires, a bail secured tothe opposite ends of said frame, said bails each being formed from a single length of wire bent between its ends to provide inwardly extending loops, a can-supporting frame disposed above the base frame and parallel therewith, said frame consisting of a single' length of wire bent into substantially rectangular form, said wire being downwardly and outwardly extended at the corners of said frame and bowed in opposite directions to provide a resilient loop, the ends of said bowed portions being brought together to form a contracted termination, said bowed ortions being insertible through the loops of) the bail members and adapted to be sprung inwardly to secure the frame in said loops, and a plurality of crossed wires secured between said frame wire adapted to receive and support a plurality of cans on said base frame.
3.
