Description
W. U. HELLER.
BOX. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 22, 19101 Patented Oct. 11,1910.
WILLIAM C. HELLER, OB MONTPELIER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE W. C. HELLER C0. -INC., F MONTPELIEB, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY;
arenas.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dbhlf, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HELLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new -and' useful im rovements in boxes or drawers designed or use in stores, to hold merchandise, the present embodiment of the invention being designed particularl for use in connection with hardware specia ties, and the inventiofr has for its primary object a simple, and stron construction of box of this character which will be well built to withstand the com aratively rough use to which it is subjecte which will be light and easy to handle and-which will at all times re-. tain its original sha e2i liability to warp bein ractically prec u ed.
1th this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain constructions, arran ements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is'to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in so which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or drawer constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a erspective view of one corner of the box; ig. 3 is atop plan view thereof; Fig. 4 is a fragmenta perspective view illustrating the parts which together make up a 'oint at the corner; and, Fig. 5 is a lon itu inal sectional View illustrating a m ification hereinafter specifi- 40 cally referred to.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
4 The bottom and sides 2 of my improved box or drawer are integrally formed of a single sheet of metal bent to the required shape and rigidly connected to the preferably wooden front 3 and back 4.
In the preferred construction of the parts, kerfs 5 are formed in the side and bottom edges of the front 3 and back 4 to receive the flanges 6 that are formed at the ends of the sheet metal bottom 1 and the sides 2, the
edges of the front and back being preferably front of the box may be formed with an upscarfed for a depth equal to the thickness of the metal, whereb the side and bottom edges of the arts wil lie perfectly smooth and flush with each other.
In the preferred method of construction, the blank out of which the bottom and sides are formed has its corners cut off obliquely by a straight out so that when the flan es 6 are forced into the kerfs 5, the ends 0 the sides 2 at the u per edges thereof will pre- 5 sent to the w an oblique edge which will act like a knife in cutting into the top edge of the front 3 and back 4, so that the inturned to flanges 7 of the sides will lie absolutely ush with the upper edges of the front 3 and back 4. Hence it will be seen that a perfectly flat and smooth top edge is formed all around the box, whereby one box ma be easily supported upon a similar box, an slipped in and out at will without any interference. Furthermore, the inturned top flanges 7 obviously serve to reinforce the sides 2, and do notpermit any warping or the like.
If desired, one or more sheet metal partiso tions 9 may be rovided, said partitions being preferably l i eaded and crimped at their upper edges as indicated at 10 so as to avoid the formation of a rough metal edge, the partitions being also flanged at their lower 35 edges as at 11 to reinforce them.
As best seen in Fig. 1, one side 2 is formed with a depressed panel 12 which is preferably enameled so that it may have written thereon the cost and selling price, and the gharacter of the goods contained within the It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the exact construction and arrangement of arts herein described and illustrated, but t at changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the ap ended claims. For instance, as indicated in Fig. 5, the
wardly extending 11p 3* substantially equal in height to the thlckness of the shelf for which the box is designed. By this means, when a plurality of such boxes or drawers are nested one above the other in their respective compartments, the shelves will be hldden and a substantially unbroken front presented in shelving the goods which will add to the attractiveness of. the fixture.
As best illustrated in Fig. v. .4,""it will be noted that the inturned top flanges 7 of the sides 2 are inwardly returned upon themselves as indicated at 7", the returned portions being formed with oblique end edges 7'. It is these end edges which cut into the side edges of the front 3 and back 4, when the flanges 6 are driven into the kerfs 5, so as to assist in securing the parts rigidly together, providing that the flanges 7 shall lie perfectly flush with the top edge of the front and back.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A box consisting of a sheet metal bottom and sides, a wooden front and back formed on their ed es with kerfs, the sides and bottom being ormed with inturned flanges embedded in the kerfs, and the sides being further formed with top flanges returned inwardly upon themselves with an lar ends adapted to shear into the top sur ace of the wood of the front and back as the first named flanges are forced into the kerfs.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WI LLTAM C. HELLER.
