To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Altos HALAsz, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Maros-Illye, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Paper- Adjusting 'Devices for \Vriting- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper adjusting devices for writing machines.
It is well known in connection with writing machines that to fix the size of the free space at the bottom of the sheet always presents difiiculties for the reason that upon the writing approaching the bottom of the sheet its lower edge is covered by the paper roller so that the edge of the paper cannot be seen and it therefore frequently happens that the writing is carried below the desired lower limit thereby spoiling the whole sheet.
The present invention has for its object a device for fitting to writing machines Which renders it possible to set the machine for the desired bottom margin in such a manner that while the sheet of paper passes by it, it indicates when the writing has reached the desired lowest line and a fresh sheet has to be inserted.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a writing machine to which the improved device is v attached, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. 7
. The improveddevice consists broadly of a bar 2 running obliquely upward above the paper rollerfl and serving, for guiding the sheet of pafYerB along thisib ar the sheet of paper 3 is carried around the paper roller 1n the direction indicated'by the arrow :1; and
slides until its .upper edge strikes against a stop 4 arranged on the bar and previously set to indicate the desired lower margin on the sheet, thereby indicating that the writing has reached this lower limit. The bar 2 is preferably made in two or more parts which are telescopic or collapsible so that when not in use the device occupies but little space.
In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated the device which may be telescopic is formed by a plate 2 sliding 1n a guide 2 and having a slot 5 in connection with which an adjustable stop 4: is guided.

PAPER-ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR WRITING-MACHINES.

This stop is connected with a small plate 6 in such a manner that when the stop is ad justed the plate is adjusted correspondingly.
A transverse support 7 may advantageously be used for fitting the bar 2 on the writing machine, the bar being attached to its middle part by means of a hinge or in any other convenient manner. In the construction now being described the transverse support rests on two-side bars 8, 9 to which it is fixed in a readily detachable manner by means of screws 12 carried by the bent ends of the transverse support, angle irons 10 being provided on this support for strengthening the connection. In the case of writing machines which do not comprise side bars some other suitable part of the machine is utilized as a bearing for the transverse support 7 The transverse support 7 may present an appropriate cross section such as shown in Fig. 2 and be hinged to the bar so that in the operative position the latter rests upon the inclined longitudinal rib .of the transverse support whereas when not in use it is collapsed and swung forward.
The device is used and may be arranged to act in the following manner. The length of the bar 2 when fully extended from its lowest point. (the lower edge of the bar) to the upper edge of the fully extended plate 6 should correspond with the length of the largest size of paper used upon the machine (34 cm.) the length of this plate should correspond with the interval between the lower edge of the rail and that place (0) of the paper roller in which the type strikes the latter so that when this largest size of paper is inserted in the machine and raised to such an extent that its lower edge occupies this position its upper edge will lie exactly in front of the stop 4. Obviously in this extreme position of the stop 4 no free space at all would be left at the bottom of the sheet and accordingly the stop may slide downward in a slot 5 along a scale marked on the sides of'the slot by a distance corresponding with the desired free space at the bottom of the sheet. When paper of small dimensions is used in the first place a sheet of this paper is arranged beside the bar which is shortened by displacing the part 2" and then the stop 4: is displaced downward so as to correspond with the free bottom space desired. If the paper is shorter than the'length of the bar when the plate 2" and guide "2" are completely telescoped or collapsed the plate 6 to which the adjustable stop is connected may be adjusted to the necessary extent so that the upper and lower edges of the sheet of paper may correspond with the lower edge of the rail and the upper edge of the plate 6. When this plate has been displaced downward to the fullest extent its upper edge may still be seen through the slot 5.
The guide member 2' can also be provided with a scale in order to simplify the adjustment of a device for known sizes of paper.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a paper adjusting device for writing machines, the combination with a paper guiding bar arranged in an inclined position above the paper roller and provided with a scale, of a stop adjustable along said scale and connected with a plate having a length equal to the interval between the lower edge of the bar and the place where the type strikes the roller.
