Be it known that I, BRYCE l. Glnns, a citizen of the United States-residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Les Augeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'lype-\Vr*iter Attachments, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention has relation to a combined detachable and adjustable paper gage and holding device, and it relates more particularly to improvements illustrated in the U. Letters Patent No. 925,516 issued to me on June 32nd, 190$).
In the above mentioned patent, a paper holding means was described which is similar in all respects to the one 1 am about to describe, but instead of employing an attachment for directing and holdin e long sheets of paper, in combination with the paper holding means, I have substituted therefor a paper directing gage, whereby additional record sheets may be instantly intrialueed into the machine at the starting point. of the preceding sheets.
lleretofore considerable. ditticulty hais beenexperienced by typewriter operators when tabulating or billing work is being done to insert succeeding sheets at exactly the same starting point as the preceding sheet-s. Moreover, -when correcting mistakes the paper has to be adjusted laterally before the error can be corrected. By the employment of my directinggage, the sheets of paper may be instantly introduced. into the machine at exactly the same starting point as preceding sheets, thus eliminating all-,man ual adjustments of the succeeding sheets by the operator.
In a practical embodiment 'tif my invention, I preferably employ an adjustable slotted bar adapted to be detachably secured to the paper table of a typewriting machine. This bar is provided with my improved adjustable gage, the end of the bar being provided with a pivoted post adjustably secured thereto, which carries on its upper end a pivoted paper holding barf In the drawings attached hereto and forming a part of this specification :Figure 1*.is a perspective view of an upper portion of avv typewriting machine, showing my improved device attached thereto. It will be observed from the foregoing description that byuueans of the adjustable block 15, if an operator were tabulating columns of figures, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the (l ai ings, if additional sheets were needed he would be enabled to instantly adjust such sheets at exactly the same starting point as the first sheet, thus rendering the tabulations on the various sheets uniform.
By means of this adjustable gage the correction of errors in tabulations or work of like character can be instantly corrected without the trouble of adjusting the sheet laterally after its entrance into the machine.
Secured to the outer end of support 10 is a vertical post 20 held in pivotal engage ment with the support 10 by means of set screw 21. The upper end of post 20 is bifurcated and a rod 22 ispivotally mounted therein. This rod is provided with a pin 23 'which'projects from either side thereof and is adapted to hold the rod 22in a horizontal operative or inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 2. of the drawings, the ends of the pin contacting; with the inner and outer faces of the post 20. By the employment of this rod all troubles, such as the paper falling forward into a position to obstruct a. View of the Writing, or interference wlth the operation of the machine, is eliminated,this
annoyance being often occasioned by a draft of air or a strong breeze. I When the operator is not employing the bar 22 he may turn the Same into the position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ,is: 1.- A- device of the class described adapted to be-attached'to a typewriter and consisting of a clamping member having means for securing the same to a part of the typewriter, and having an arm adapted to extend longitudinally of the typewrlter platen, said arm having a guide groove therein extending from the end face thereof longitudinally along said arm, a guide block enga lug-said groove, and having means for ice ing the same thereto, said block being adapted to slip upon said arm from the end thereof, means for locking said 'block'to said arm, a'post attached near one end of said clamping memher and extending upwardly, a guide bar 25 pivotally attached to said post so as to rotate ,on a horizontal axistransverse to'said arm,
means for supporting said guide bar in an operative positlon in which it, projects over tac said clamping member, and means for supporting said bar in a folded position on the outer side of said post and projecting away from'said clamping men'iber.
2. A typewriter having a platen, a table disposed adjacent to said platen adapted to support the free edges of a sheet of paper passed around said platen, a clampadapted to be attached to said table and having an extension projecting longitudinally of said platen and between said'platen and said table, said extension being adapted to support the free portion o'f'said sheet which projects from the under side of said platen, a gage block adapted to slide onto said extension from the end, and a member supported by said clamp projecting longitudinally of said platen and extending in front of the free portion of said sheet which extends forwardly from the upper and forward side of said platen.
4. A typewriter having avplaten, a fixed member having an extension rejecting substantially parallel with said platen and adapted to support the free edges of a sheet of paper passed around said platen, an adjusting age block mounted on said exten- (I a rodpivotally supported on a horizontal axis. at one end by said member ada ted to be swung out of the way and normal y projecting in a substantially horizontal posit-ion longitudinally of said platen and ada )ted to extend across the forward side of t 1e upward free edge of said sheet of paper.
