Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLARD T. SEARS, a citizen Of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, Penn- Sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gapped Gears, Of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to gears gapped through the rim and inwardly, `such gears being frequently employed on car axle lathes designed for the turning of car'- wheels while On their axle, the driving apparatus, including the gapped gear, beingy disposed around the axle between the wheels, and the invention relates to the system for operating the rim-patch in opening and closing the gap.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in cOnnection with the accompanying' drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gapped gear exemplifying my present invention: and Fig. 2 is a plan Of a portion of the patch-Operating lever.
In the drawing 1, indica-tes the toothed rim of the gear: 2, the hub: 3, the gap eX- tending through the rim and inwardly: 4, the patch adapted, when in place, to bridge the gap and complete the rim: 5, tail-bars extending from one end of the patch: 6, a pivot uniting the ends of the tail-bars to the gear and forming a hinge on which the patch makes its Opening and closing motion: 7, a lever extending from the patch inwardly through the rim Of the gear at one side Of the gap: 8, a pivot uniting the Outer end Of the lever to the patch: 9, a latchhook formed On the lever near the patch: 10, a cam-shaped pad on the inner end of the lever: 11, a fixed pin supported alongside the gear in position to be engaged by the pad as the gear rotates, rotation being, in the illustration, in non-clockwise direction, this pin being, preferably arranged for endwise displacement Out of its position Of activity: and 12, a latch-shoulder carried by the gear at the side Of the gap Opposite that at which the patch is pivoted, this latchshoulder coperating -with latch-hook 9 when the patch is in closed position.
Assume the patch tO be in closed position and latch-hook 9 engaged with shoulder 12, and urged into and held in such engagement by the spring with which the lever is provided. As the gear turns, in non-clockwise direction, cam-pad l0 strikes pin 1l, the first eifect of which is to flex the lever on its pivot and release the latch-hook. The pad is shouldered, as shown, and the further turning Of the gear' causes the lever to push the patch to Open position, leaving the structure in the condition shown in the drawing. The continued rotation Of the gear causes the lever tO be freed from the influence Of pin ll, whereupon the patch falls to closed position and becomes automatically locked. If pin ll be non-removable then the patch will automatically Open and close the gap at each turn of the gear, but if the pin be displaceable, the Opening and closing motion of the patch will be made only when the pin is put in active position and the lever comes tO it.
I claim l. A gapped gear comprising, a gear having a gap extending through its rim and inwardly, a patch hinged to the gear at one side Of the gap and adapted tO bridge the gap Of the rim, a lever projecting inwardly from the patch, a cum-pad On the inner end Of the lever, and a fixed part adapted to be engaged by the cam-pad and force the patch to Open position, combined substantially as set forth.
A gapped gear comprising, a gear having a gap extending through its rim and inwardly, a patch hinged to the gear at One side Of the gap and adapted to bridge the gap of the rim, a lever pivoted tO the patch and extending inwardly, a latch-hook formed on the lever and adapted to engage a latchshoulder On the gear when the patch is in closed position, a cani-pad carried by the inner end Of the lever, and a fixed pin adapted to be engaged by the cam-pad and Hex the lever to unlatching position and then push the patch to open position, combined substantially as set forth.
