Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS J. CoovnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Med- Way, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MoWer-Sickles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sickles, and more specifically to means for binding the blades on the sicklerod by the means hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which will allow the removal of any individual blade in the assemblage without removing the sickle from the finger bar.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a finger bar having my improved sickle therein. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the sickle. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the sickle. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of modified means for holding one end of the strap or retaining bar.
In the specification and drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
1 designates a bar on which are mounted a suitable number of fingers 2 which collectively form the finger bar attachable to the machine, such as a mower or binder, in any suitable manner. It has not been deemed necessary to illustrate either of such machines, as the attachment of the finger bar is well understood.
Slidingly mounted within the finger bar is a sickle consisting of a bar 3 and any number of blades 4. The said bar 3 is provided on one end with a head 5 which lies above the surface of the bar proper and forms a shoulder against which the blade 4 at that end of the sickle abuts. The said head 5 has an apertured boss 6 adapted to be engaged by a pitman (not shown) to reciprocate the same. Extending across the upper sides of the blades 4 is a strap 7, one end of which is bifurcated and provided with hooks 8 which receive the end of the head 5. The other end of the strap 7 is provided with a hook 13 which lies under the other end of the sickle bar 3. The end of the strap so containing the hook 13 is provided with a setscrew which engages a clip 12, the latter inclosing the blade 4 and the sickle bar 3 at that end. It will readily be seen that in tightening the set-screw 9, all of the blades 4 will be rigidly tightened or bound between the hooks 8, or rather between the shoulder of the head 5 of the sickle bar and the clip 12 at the other end. of the sickle bar, and said blades will thus be prevented from dropping from the sickle. The sickle is prevented from buckling by a suitable number of guards 10 mounted on the finger bar and extending over the strap 7. WVhen it is de sired to remove a blade from the sickle, the set-screw 9 may be released to remove the pressure which is binding the blade and to remove the fingers 2. It will therefore be seen that it is unnecessary to remove the entire sickle from the finger bar when it is desired to repair the same.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form for holding the head of the strap 7. In this construction the hook 8 is eliminated, and a bolt 11 is provided, the latter having a square shank which engages the boss 6 of the head 5.
Having described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the character specified, the combination with a finger bar, a sickle bar having a plurality of blades mounted thereon, a strap bifurcated at one end and terminating in hooks which engage an extension of the sickle bar at that end of said sickle bar, the other end of said strap terminating in a hook which incloses the other end of the sickle bar, a clip, a screw penetrating said hook end of said strap and engaging said clip, said clip being adapted to bind the blades assembled on the sickle bar between said clip and the otherend of the sickle bar, and guards adapted to prevent the sickle bar from buckling under the pressure exerted to bind the blades in rigid contact.
