Specification of Letters Pa tent.
Patented Oct. 4, 1910.
Application tiled February 16, 1910. Serial No. 544,279.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICEXTE L. FORMEN-` 'rosx a citizen ofthe United States, residinv` at Manila. in the Province of Manila, Phi inpine Islands, 'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators; ancLI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-'description of the in# vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in refrigerators and is particularly designed to provide a refrigerator which is so constructed as to provide compartments for the receptionof ice, food, and bottled goods, such as water, the bottles being so arranged as to be automatically fed for delivery so that the bottles to be next used are always on the bottom, at the coolest part of the refrigerator.
With this object in view, the invention consists in theJ arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and the particular features of novelty will be pointed out more succinctly in the claims.
While the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for thepurpose of disclosure reference is had tothe accompanying drawings, representing a practical embodiment of the invention, in which drawings like letters designate the same parts in the two views, and 1n which- Figure 1 is-avfront elevation of my improved refrigerator With the door swung open and a portion of the front belng broken away to show more clearly the interior arrangement, and Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section in a plane parallel to the front.
1 designates the exterior housing of my improved refrigerator, consist-ing of the spaced side walls '2 and 3 and the bottom wall 4, spaced a substantial distance from the bottom proper ofthe box, and formin compartments 5 andvG, which may be fille up with charcoal or cork dust, or other suitable cleanlymaterial which assists in re-l taining the interior of the refrigerator in a cool state. It will, vof course, be understood 'that the rear walls and a. ortion ofl the front wall may be similary spaced and packed with suitable material, althou h the front of the ice-box may be entirely o glass, especially Where the box is to be used for display purposes. In the drawings, howthe division plate 11, extending in a direction fromthe front to the rear of the box.
Supported on the top of this division plate 11 area pair of U-shaped rods 12, arranged parallel and spaced from each other,
land from the rear wall of the refrigerator.
These rods' may be secured to the division block 11 by means of screws, as shown, and the upper ends of the rods are bent rearwardly and are fastened to the rear wall of the refrigerator. The division block 11 may besecured to the curved base board 10 in any suitable way, andit may also be fixed l to the rear wall ofthe refrigerator, for in-` stance by the bracket member 13..
14 designates an upper tray extending-between the -U-shaped rods and providing a` shelf for articles of food, and 15 is a lower tray for receiving the ioe.
16 is afdrain pipe, leading from the inside of the curved base 10, anopening 17 being provided in the division late to allow-the wat-er on each side thereo to drain down to the pipe. The lower end of the pipe projects beneaththe refrigerator and is provided with a cup 18, which may be held in place by any suitable means, such as the clamping fingers 19 shoved up into the end of the pipe. By this construction, a trap is formed whereby the water is allowed to `drain off without air passing up the pipe into contact with the ice.
In residences or establishments where it is desired to keep a quantity of Water iced for drinking purposes, it has been-found to be a great disadvantage to place the bottles promiscuously into the refrigerator, becausey very frequently a bottle just refilled would probably be the one to be rst taken out, before it was fully iced.' By my invention, however, I provide means whereby in operation the bottles are placed one upon the other in the upper chambers formed by the U- shaped inner wall and the U-shaped division rods, so that when the lowermost bottles, which must of necessity be the coldest, are withdrawn, the next coolest bottles are fed into -place for withdrawal, and the emptied bottles may be relled and replaced at the vas each bottle is. withdrawn it may-be refilled and replaced,- as before stated. The'bottles may be placed in position through-the top of the ice-box 9, or where the front of the box consists of a hinged door the bottles may be placed in position from the front.
Of course it will be understood that the interior of the box may be suitably lined with any proper material, such as zinc, porcelain, or other well known linings.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen ,that by the arrangement illustrated there is provided not only a cooling chamber for articles of food, but also a separate chamber for receiving a number of bottles,
out of contact with the food or ice, and delivering the bottles alternately atthe bottom of the ice-box, Where the temperature is lowest.-
Having thus described the invention, it will beseen that a very eicient refrigerator is produced, and one which is particularly adapted for use where it is desired to display the contents of the refrigerator.
What I claim is 1. In a refrigerator, the combination of a housing containing an internal compartment of U-shaped construction, a division plate at the base of said-U-sha-ped compartment, a vertically disposed internal member of U` shaped construction having its sides ar- -ranged parallel to the sides of said compartment and having its base supported by -said division block, whereby two guideways are formed at each side of the refrigerator, substantially as described.
sion plate, thebottom of said interior U- shapedl member forming a support for the ice, and said U-s'haped member and the walls .of said U-shaped compartment forming guideways on each side of the ice support, substantially: as described. 4 3. In a refrigerator, the combination of a housingr having a U-shaped compartment, a
division plate extendin across said compartment, yan lnterior U-s a' ed member supported at its base by sai division plate, a shelf mounted Within said U-shaped member at a. substantial distance from the bottom thereof, forming a support for food, the
space between the base of said U-shaped member and said shelf forming an ice chamber, and said U-sha ed member and U- shaped compartment orming a curved hopper or guideway for receiving and feeding downwardly a series of receptacles at each side of the ice compartment, substantially as described.
4. In a refrigerator, the combination of a' housing having a compartment of U-shaped construction, a plurality of rods of U-shaped construction supported within said U-shaped chamber and spaced from each other and from the rear wallv of said chamber, said U- shaped rods forming an open su port for the 1ce, and said rods and U-shape chamber forming a U-shaped guideway or hopper for 'receiving vand holding receptacles out of contact with the food and ice, and delivering said receptacles to the base of said compartments where the temperature is lowest, substantially as described.
In testimon whereof, I aiiix my signature, in presence o .two Witnesses.
