Be it known that l, Tnnonon Racine, engmeer, a citizen of the Swiss .RGEHllJllCfEQ- thur, Switzerland, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Internal-Conn bustion Engines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object ofthe present invention is to prevent accidental admission through the starting valve of an internal combustion en-'-' gine of the air or gasflunder pressure which is to be used for starting the engine,
Hitherto the starting valve has usually opened inward into the combustion chainher or the cylinder, so that the valve has been held closed by the pressure in. the cylinder. In reversible combustion engines, the starting valve in not admit any air under pressure to the working cylinder when the reversing mechanism is being turned back through the starting position, as when it is being turned from the position. which it has when the engine is running to that which it has when the engine is at rest. This is of especial importance because it may happen that during this movement of the reversing mechanism the starting valve is opened, which would hinder the engine from coming to rest, For the purpose of removing this diflicul-ty and danger the present invention provides a cut-0d device such as a check valve in the pipe conducting the compressedair to the starting valve, which device opened to allow passage of the air, by the act of reversing the engine, but otherwise cuts oil the air from the starting valve.
