Be it known that I, CARL G. JANsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in" the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sidewalk- Elevator Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to entrances to basements from the sidewalk by means of stairs or the like which lead from the sidewalk down to the basement, and where a covering to the entrance is required.
This invention has for its object the production of means for forming a water-tight joint at the junction of the doors which are adapted to close the opening.
Another object of this invention is the production of means for firmly securing the two angle irons as described in the following specification, together.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a transverse section of the doors showing the same mounted upon their supports. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the means for connecting the two angle irons together. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4:4: of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates the I beams upon which the primary angle beams 2 are mounted. The primary angle beams 2 support upon their horizontal surface, auxiliary angle beams 3. The beams 3 are secured to the beams 2 by means of staples 4t which pass through apertures formed in the horizontally extending portions of the beam. The lower ends 5 of the staples 4: are bent laterally so as to prevent the staple from being removed therefrom. A Wedge 6 is driven through the staple 1, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 1, and thereby it will be obvious that the angle beams 2 and 3 will be firmly clamped together and held against displacement.

supported or secured to the under surface of the door 7 and is held spaced apart therefrom by means of a spacing block 1 1, and the channel irons or U-shaped member 15. The angle member 13 is secured to the door 7 by means of rivets or bolts 16. The angle member 13 is provided with a depending longi tudinally extending rib or flange 17, and the channel iron 15 is adapted to be placed upon said flange as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The outer flange 18 of the channel iron 15 is adapted to engage the end surface of the adjacent end of the door 8 as also clearly shown in Fig. 1. It will, therefore, be obvious that any moisture which would be likely to pass between the doors 7 and 8 will flow into the trough formed by beam 15, and thereby be carried off and will not enter the cellar or hatcliway.
A substantially Ushaped guide member 19 is secured to one end of the hatchway and is provided with a laterally extending ear 20 near one end thereof. A locking device 21 is carried by the door 8 and is adapted to engage the ear 20 and hold the doors in a locked or closed position. The rocking device 21 is released'from ear 20 by means of a finger 22 mounted on a rocker shaft 23 carried by door 8 in a manner similar to the disclosure of my Patent No. 780,610, dated Jan. 24, 1905.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that I have provided a simple and efficient means for firmly securing the two angle irons 2 and 3 together and also for causing a good joint at the junction of the adjacent edges of the doors 7 and 8.
lVhat I claim is In combination with a hatchway frame, doors hinged thereto, of an angle member supported by one of said doors and comprising a body portion and a depending flange portion, a block interposed between said door and said body portion of said angle member for holding the same out of engagement with said door, a channel iron interposed between said first-mentioned door and said angle member, and being adapted to enthe other door for closing the opening between the same when the doors are in a closed position, a substantially U-shaped member carried by said frame, and provided with 2111 anguhu'ly disposed end, said de-.
