stituents sometimes found in commercial gases, etc.
I attain the objects of my invention by the use of the means and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like figures refer to similar parts throughout.
Figure 1 is a side view or elevation of the entire machine. Fig. 2, is a top view of the machine, certain of the parts, viz. the chart drum and pump cylinder, being shown in section and certain other parts being shown, broken away. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the pedestals employed to support the. shaft carrying the chart drum. Fig. 4 is a view of another pedestal employed for the same purpose. Fig. 5 shows front and side views of a pedestal employed to support a nozzle through which the smoke is ejected against the chart, andv a perforated shield interposed between the nozzle and the chart. Fig. 6 shows certain details of thepedestal illustrated in Fig. 4 and of the gearing means employed for communicating motion to the shaft carrying the drum. In Fig. 1, the numeral 1 indicates a'motor employed to drive the machine. This motor may be of any type preferred. A gear wheel, 2, is rigidly fixed t0 the shaft of the motor and meshes with the gear wheel, 3. A connecting rod, 4, communicates'motion from 3 to the piston, 5, which'plays in the pump-cylinder, 6. The .smoke receiver, 7, is connected with the cylinder, as shown and the liquid, 8, preferably oil, normally fills 7 to the point X or thereabout. On the forward thrust of the piston, the oil is drawn into the cylinder from the smoke receiver, the level falling to about the point, y. On the reverse stroke of the piston, the ,leVel of the oil again. rises to X The oil serves the purpose of a liquid piston for the smoke receiver or pump, 7 and also operates to entrap any foreign matter, such as cinders and'ash that might flo'at in the chimney gases and tend to cut the piston and cylinder, 5 and 6. The foreign matter so entrapped in the oil, settles to the bottom of the smoke receiving vessel and accumulates at 7*. The oil, when desired, may be drawn off by means of the plugged vent, 9. The pipe, 10 leads to the chimney or other source from which it is desired to draw the smoke or gas. The check valve, 11 is intermediate between the smoke receiver, 7, and the pipe 10 and the check valve, 12, is intermediate between 7 and the nozzle, 13. The arrangement is such that on the forward stroke of the piston, valve 11 opens and valve '12 closes, while the opposite valve operations occur on the reverse stroke of the piston. The connecting rod, 1 1, is connected with the crank, 15 and the link, 16. The timing shield, 17, is revoluble on the pin, 18. The pawl 19, engages the teeth, 20 on the periphery of the timing shield 17. The pawl, 21, is held in contact with 17 by the spring, 22. The elongated aperture, 23, in the timing shield, 17 may be closed to any degree desired by the adjustable shutter, 24. The shield, 25, is interposed between the timing shield 17 and the chart drum 4.5. A small hole, 41, Fig. 7, is drilled in 25, exactly opposite the orifice, 13 of the nozzle, 13. Shield 25, is supported by the arm, 26.
. A clock mechanism, 27, drives the cogged wheel, 28. The shaft 29, which supports the chart drum, 4:5, is slidably journaled in the bearing, 34, of the pedestal, 39. The shaft is provided with a driving screw, 30 as shown. The end, 31, of the shaft, 29, is turned down to form a slight shoulder at the point, 32, where the driving screw 30, begins. A longitudinal key-way, 33, is provided throughout the length of the driving screw, 30. The gearwheel, 28 is provided with a key 35, which is freely movable in the keyway, 33. The arrangement is such that as the gear wheel 23, is revolved by the clock or other driving mechanism employed, the shaft 30, is revolved through the agency of the key 35 and the key-way, 33. The drum, 45, revolves with the shaft. The shaft is given a lateral movement by means of the screw, 30, which is in engagement with the screw, 34. The drum, 45, is accordingly given a compound movement, being caused to revolve with its shaft and moving laterally with it. The nozzle, 13, is held by the clamps, 37* and 37 which are supported by the pedestal, 36. The screw, 38, holds the. clamp, 37. The drum,'45, is supported upon the shaft, 30, by means of the spider, 46. The bearing, 47 permits adjustment of the drum upon the shaft by means of the set screw 48. The studs, 49? and 49 on the inter ior of the drum, are drilled and tapped with right and left threads to receive the screws,.50 and 50". By means of the button, 51, the screws may be operated to open or close the opening, 52. The arrangement facilitates placing the chart sheet upon or removing same from the drum. The chart sheet, 42, may have the hours of the day or other arbitrary divisions of time, 43, printed upon it. The records will appear upon the chart in a series of discolorations, 44,the degree of the discoloration indicating the quantity or percentage of the smoke existing. The nozzle, 13, has a very small aperture, 13*. The smoke is forced through this aperture by the action of the pump and impinges against the timing shield, a record being made only when the aperture 23 in the timing shield is opposite the discharge nozzle. The length of exposure of the chart to the jet of smoke may be regulated by the shutter, 24. One record'will be made for each complete revolution of the timing shield, while several operations of the pump may take place for each such revolution. This arrangement permits of a rapid operation of the pum and also insures that each record will be distinct from every other.
It is essential that the smoke be delivered I against the chart in a fine stream, otherwise the coloring matter will spread more than is desired and the records will not be distinct. As the nozzle must be at some distance from the chart, relatively speaking, owing to. the interposed timing shield the use of the shield 25, is rendered necessary. This shield is placed in very close roximity to the chart. The smoke is d "ven against it from the nozzle and a fine stream passes through the aperture, 41 and against the 'chart sheet, such coloring matter as exists in the smoke being deposited upon the chart.
The shaft carrying the drum may be lifted from its bearings. This provision in connecmake it possible to start the series of records at any point upon the chart desired. When the screw, 30, leaves the screw-bearing, 34", the lateral movement of the drum and its shaft ceases.
The operation of the machine will require little further explanation. The gases are drawn into the smoke receiving chamber on the forward movement of the piston, 5, and expelled through the nozzle, 13, when the reverse piston operation occurs. The features of adjustment have already been sufficiently described.
Having now fully illustrated and described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A smoke recording apparatus consisting ofa pump and means for operating thesame; a movable chart-carrying mechanism; a valve-controlled passage leading from the; pump to the source of smoke supply, and a valve-controlled passage leading from the pump to a point near said chart-carrying mechanism. 90

A smoke recording apparatus, consisting of a pump and means for, operating same; a chart carrying mechanism; a tube leading from the source of gas supply to said pump and from said pump to near said chart carrying mechanism and suitable valve means for insuring a flow of gas in one direction'thr'ough said tube. y
3. A smoke recording mechanism, consisting of a pump cylinder and means for operating a. piston therein; a tube leading from the source of smoke supply to said cylinder and from said cylinder to a. movable chart carrying mechanism and valvular means for insuring a flow of gas from the source of supply through said tubes when said pump is being operated. p
4. A smoke recording mechanism, consisting of an aspirating device and achart carrying mechanism; a tube leadlng from the source of smoke supply to saidaspir'ating device and from said aspirating device to near :said chart carryin mechanism, and means for operating sai aspirating device and moving said chart carrying mechanism. 1 5. A smoke recording apparatus, consisting of a cylindrical, piston pump, connected with a vessel containing a liquid; a tube having a valve therein leading from the source of smoke supply to near the top of said vessel; a revoluble drum, adapted to 130 carry a chart and a tube having a valye therein, leading from the upper part of said liquid containing vessel to near said chart 'foroperating same; a movable chart carrying mechanism and mechanical means for operating same; a vessel having a liquid therein and connected with said pump; a tube leading from the source of smoke supply to the upper part of said liquid containing vessel; a tube leading fromthe upper part of said liquid containing vessel to near said chart carrying mechanism and havlng a small discharge orifice adjacent thereto and directed thereatv and valvular means in said tubes for insuring a flow of gas from said source of supply through said tubes and to said orifice,
8. A smoke recording mechanism consisting of an aspirating device and a chart carrying apparatus; means for operating both; a tube leading from the source of smoke supply to said aspirating device and from said aspirating device to near said chart carrying mechanism; valvular means for directing a flow of gas from said source of supply through said tubes; means for directing a jet of said gas from said tube against the chart carried by said apparatus and means for fixing the time that said jet of gas shall play against said chart.
9. A: smoke recording apparatus consistingof an aspirating device and a chart carrying mechanism; mechanical means for op erating same; a tube having avalve therein, and leading from the source of smoke supply to said aspirating device; a tube leading from said aspirating device to near said chart carrying mechanism and having a relatively minute discharge'orifice, and a mechanically operated shutter, interposed between said discharge orifice and said chart carrying mechanism.
10. A smoke recording apparatus, consisting of an aspirating device and a chart carrying mechanism; mechanical means for operating same; a tube having a valve therein, and leading from the source of smoke supply to said aspirating device; a tube leading from said aspiiating device to near said chart carrying mechanism, said tube having a relatively small discharge orifice; a mechanifially operated sh'utter interposed between said orifice and said chart carrying mechanism, said shutter having an elongated slotted opening therein opposite to said discharge orifice.
11. A smoke recording apparatus, consisting of an aspirating device and a chart carrying mechanism; mechanical means for operating same; a tube having a valve therein, and leading from the source of smoke supply to said aspirating device; a tube leading from said aspirating device to near said chart carrying mechanism, sald tube having a relatively small discharge orifice; a mechanically operated shutter interposed between said orifice and said chart carrying mechanism; an elongated slotted opening in said shutter opposite to said discharge orifice and means for shortening the length of I said slotted opening.

In a smoke recording device consisting of an apparatus for directing a stream of gas upon a movable chart, the combination therewith of a shutter orv shield, operated by mechanical means and interposed between the chart and the orifice through which the smoke is directed against the chart, an elongated slotted opening in said shield and means for adjusting the area of said opening.

In a smoke recording apparatus, consisting of a device for directing a stream of gas upon a movable chart, the combination therewith of a shutter or shield, operated by mechanical means and interposed between the chart and the orifice through which the smoke is directed against the chart, and a secondary shield having a minute opening therein and interposed between said first mentioned shield said chart.
15. In a smoke recording apparatus consisting of a device for directing a stream of gas upon a movable chart, the combination therewith of a suitable mechanically operated shutter device for causing said stream of gas to play intermittently upon said chart.
