CHARLES HEDWIG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 26, 1909.
Patented Got. 4, 1910.
Serial No. 514,838.
Mounted in and movable in the channels Be it known that 1, CHARLES Hnnwio, a c of the channeled casings c are shoes 0 citizen of the United States, and residing at the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates particularly to the sashes of windows and the object thereof is to provide improved means whereby the sashes may be raised and lowered and swung inwardly to facilitate the cleaning of said sashes or the transparent panel therein on both sides thereof, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of a window constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 an inside view of one side of the window and showing the top sash open; Fig. 3 a similar view of the opposite side of the window and showing the bottom sash open; Fig. 4 a transverse and perspective view of one side of the window frame and showing a part of one of the sashes and showing the means for connecting said sash with the frame; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a part of a shoe which I employ and which forms a part of the means for connecting a sash with the frame; Fig. 6 a perspective view showing a part of a channeled casing which I employ and which also forms a part of the means for connecting a sash with the frame.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown a window frame comprising side members a, a top member a and a bottom member a and I have also shown at Z; and b the top and bottom sashes provided with the usual transparent panels 6 and in the practice of my invention I secure to the opposite sides a of the window frame channeled casings 6, having two separate channels 6 which correspond with the top and bottom sashes, and the inner walls of which are provided with longitudinal slots or openings 6 having parallel flanges c forming grooves 0 and the sashes I) and b are hinged to side bars having longitudinal tongues which lit in the grooves 0 and which are secured in said grooves in any desired manner so that said bars are connected with and movable with the shoes 0.
The sashes b and I) are hinged to the bars f at 0 and in the form of construction shown one of said sashes, the top sash, is hinged to the bar f at the left hand side of the frame, and the other or bottom sash is hinged to the bar at the right hand side of the frame. The sashes b and b are also provided, in practice, with the usual counter-balance cords and counter-balance weights 9 one of said cords being shown in Fig. 4:, and two of said cords and weights being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
he free side edge portions of the sashes o and b are provided with snap hooks or similar fastening devices a, by means of which the said side edges of said sashes may be connected with corresponding bars f, and in the bottom a of the frame and at the side of said frame to which the bottom sash is hinged, is a transverse recess 10, and in order to open the upper sash as shown in Fig. 2, the lower sash must'be fully opened and dropped down into said recess, as shown in Fig. 3, this construction and operation being necessary if, is usual, the top of the bottom sash is in front of the top sash when said sashes are in their closed position as shown in Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing the channeled casings c in the opposite sides of the window frame comprise aback member provided at its opposite side edges and centrally thereof with longitudinal flanges e, to which are secured longitudinal strips or plates 0 which form the slots or openings 6 but saidvchanneled casings may be made in any desired manner.
W'ith my improvement the sashes may be raised and lowered and adjusted into any desired position in the usual manner, and may be secured together when in the closed position by the usual sash lock device it, and said sashes may be swung inwardly on their hinges 0 in the manner shown and described whenever desired for cleaning or other purposes.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the opposite sides of a window frame the inner faces of which are plain, of casings secured thereto and provided with two vertically arranged channels, the inner walls of which are provided centrally with vertically arranged openings, shoes vertically movable in said channels and provided with parallel flanges which pass through said openings, vertically arranged bars provided with tongues secured between said flanges and sashes hinged to said bars.
2. The combination with the opposite sides of a window frame, of casings secured thereto and provided with two vertically arranged channels, the inner walls of which are provided centrally with vertically arranged openings, shoes vertically movable in said M channels and provided with parallel flanges which pass through said openings, vertically arranged bars provided with tongues secured between said flanges and sashes hinged to said bars, the top of the bottom sash overlapping the bottom of the top sash when said sashes are closed, and the bottom of the window frame being provided at the side at which the bottom sash is hinged with a transverse recess into which said sash is adapted to be lowered when opened.
