p to raise the tail-end the nut washer will permit: 11, a screw WILLIAM ANDREW PETERSEN, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
TOOL-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ANDREW PETERSEN, a citizen of Canada, residin at 1120 Des Erables avenue, Montreal, rovince of Quebec, (lanada, have invented certain new and useful lm rovements in Tool- Holders, of which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to tool-holders ar' ranged to be operated by hand or pneumatically and designed principally for use on metal working lathes, and the invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan of a tool-holder embodylng my-invention: Fig. 2 a rear elevation of the same: and Fig. 3 a vertical section in the plane of line a of Fig. 1.
In the drawing:-1, indicates the toolholding slide of a lathe or similar tool-carrying metal-working machine: 2, the toolseatformed thereon; 3, the tool restin on' the tool-seat; 4, the tool-clamp, in the form of a lever, disposed over the slide and having one end resting on the tool: 5, serrated inserts of hard steel in the lower face of the tool-engaging portion of the clamp: '6, a bolt projecting up from the slide, near the tool, and passing loosely through the clamp: 7, a nut on this bolt, above the clamp, the lower face of this nut being convex: 8, a washer disposed between the nut and the clamp and having a concave ufpper face engaged by the nut: 9, a pair 0 rockers pro- Jecting down from the washer and engaging the upper surface of the clamp, there being one of these rockers to the front and one to the rear of the bolt, the two being in one line parallel with the tool, and the lower face of the washer standing clear of the clamp, these rockers forming the fulcrum for the clamp:
10, a helical spring surrounding the bolt between the slide and the clamp and tending of the clamp as far as threaded down through the tail-end of the clamp, or the end farthest from the tool, the foot of this screw abutting 0n the slide, and the upper end of the screw being provided with a head for a wrench and also with a nurl 0 permit it to be turned by the fingers: 12, a step of hardened steel inserted in the slide at the foot of screw 11, the engagement of the screw and ste being of balljoint character: 13, a pair of rods projecting Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 16, 1910. Serial No. 581,702.
Patented ct. 4, 1910.
and journaled in the slide, the long and of the lever being centrally below the cylinder, and its cam-end being near screw 11 19, trunnions on the cam-end of the lever: 20, trunnion-bearings formed in the slide preferably by means of inserted steel blocks: 21, a cam formed on the outer end of the camlever and engaging under the clamp: 22, a steel insert in the clamp where it is engaged by the cam: 23, a link connecting the long end of the lever with the piston and passing loosely through a hole in the clamp: and 24, screws employed in securing the cylinder to the clamp.
In Fig. 3 assume, for the present, that screw 11 is absent from the devlce or that it is screwed up to inactive position. The tool is now seen to be clamped by the powerful action of piston 17 acting through the power multiplying devices represented by the camlever and the fulcrum clamp: In practice I secure, by these transmit-ting devices, a relation of thirty-two to one, that is to say, with a given total pressure on the piston thirt two times that pressure will be exerted in clamping the tool.
When the pressure is released from over the piston then springs 14 depress the tailend of the clamp, thus bringing about the elevation of the piston in the cylinder and the release of the tool, spring 10 keeping the clamp up against its fulcrum so that the clamp lifts away from the tool, leaving it free for removal. Owing to the very liberal movement which the device provides for the clamp it is not necessary to make any adjustments preliminary to the pneumatic clamping of the tool. When a tool is used having a shank materially different in size from one for which the device has been adjusted, then nut 7 will require to be adjusted to suit the new condition.
The cam can obviously be so shaped as to yield practically a uniform clamplng effect on the tool regardless of ordinary variations v the slide and clamp and tending to in the angular position of the cam lever. The cylinder can be made of an length desired and it is to be observed t at, by reason of its location upon the top of the clam it does not bring about any interfering si e projections of the device and does not'mterfere with the workmans view of the point of the tool. Furthermore, by reason 'of the cylinder bein carried by the clamp instead of by the sli e, the simple removal of nut 7 permits of the ready removal of the clamp with all of its accessories.
' If compressed air be not available then screw 11 can be brought into action, in an obvious manner, and without necessity for disconnecting any other parts.
