To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEWEY idlonoo'r'r, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Holders for Floor-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpet stretchers and particularly to a. device adapted to be attached to a carpet or rug for the purpose of holding it in distended position on the iioor, the said invention being also designed to prevent the floor covering from becoming disarranged by reason of the movement of articles of furniture thereover or from other causes.
An object of this invention is to produce a tension device to which the floor covering may be applied or removed although the invention is primarily intended to permit the Hoor covering to be handled readily while the said floor covering and invention are in assembled relation and to that end, the device embodying the invention is preferably formed of resilient material which will permit the device to bend as the floor covering is bent in the act of shaking or cleaning.
A further object of this invention is to produce a holder for floor coverings (and by the term floor covering I wish to be understood as meaning any rug, carpet, art square or the like and I therefore use this comprehensive term) which holder may be adjusted within predetermined bounds in order that it may act in conjunction with vfloor cover ing of different sizes, novel means being provided for affording the adjustment and for retaining the sections of the device in proper position after the adjustment has been attained.
iVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and Ain the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming partof this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a top plan view of the apparatus with a rug applied thereto, the rug being broken away for displaying the Specification of Letters Patent. adjustable character of the apparatus above mentioned; Fig. 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through one of the joints; Fig. 3 illustrates al transverse sectional view through one of the joints; Fig. 5L. illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through two of the fastening devices by which the floor covering is secured to the apparatus; Fig. illustrates a detail sectional view of the means for securing the covering to the apparatus; and Fig. G illustrates a detail view of the means for fastening the sections of the frame of the apparatus after they have been properly adjusted. Fig. 7 illustrates a plan View of a. clasping member of the frame.
In the drawings l have shown a rectangular frame comprising four sections 6, 7, 8 and 9. rI`wo of the sections 7 and 9, which will hereafter be referred to as the upper sections in that their ends slide over the other sections for the purpose of adjustment, are practically duplicates of each other7 whereas the other two sections 6 and 8 to be hereafter referred to as the lower sections for the reasons just explained are likewise of the same general construction.
Each of the lower sections is formed of sheet metal having resilientcharacteristics, one end of each of said sections standing at an angle to the other end thereof in order to form a corner 10. The sections or rather the plates from which they are formed have cupped portions 11 formed by striking the metal at those points in order that it will stand above the general plane of the plate and the struck-up portions are preferably cut. transversely to form the slots 12, thereby producing resilient clasping members designed to receive heads 13 of buttons 1st, which buttons 14 are secured to the iioor covering in any desired manner.
Each lower section at one end is provided with a series of shoulders 16 shown in the drawings as six in number and another series of shoulders 15, four in number which are formed by bending the metal or striking it up to such a degree as to form cup-shaped engaging members. That portion of the lower section containing four engaging members is preferably placed at the end of the frame and is provided for the purpose of affording a transverse adjustment of the frame. The lower sections are also provided with studs 17 comprising screws having heads with threaded shanks seated in apertures of the bottom sections. Two studs l? are provided at each end o1 each lower section at opposite sides ot the engaging members heretofore described.
Each of the upper sections is of the saine general contour as that heretofore described and they are provided with button engaging clasps hence they are similar to the lower sections except that at their ends, the upper sections are provided with a series of apertures 1S, six in number corresponding to the six cup-shaped engaging members on the lower sections, the said engaging` members being adapted to project slightly into the apertures 18 when the sections are in assembled relation. Each upper section is also provided with a series of apertures 19, tour in number corresponding to the cup-shaped engaging members on the lower sections and are designed to receive such engaging members tor the purpose of permitting an adjustment of the sections with relation to one another. Each of the upper sections is provided near its ends with parallel longitudinally disposed slots 2O to receive the studs 17, the said slots and studs acting as guides and securing devices for retaining the sections in operative relation.
From an inspection of the drawing, it will be observed that the frame formed by the sections just described may be increased or diminished in size by telescoping the side portions of the sections or the end portion ot the sections and while I have in practice, utilized this device in connection with tloor coverings which did not vary greatly in size, it is to be understood that the degree of adjustment afforded by the joints described may be varied to suit particular requirements and I therefore do not wish to specify the degree of adjustment, or the distance which the fastening means are separated on each member as that may be varied within predetermined bounds to suit the particular cases or uses of the device.

In an attachment for spreading and holding toor coverings, a frame comprising sections having' adjustable interlocking connections at their ends, cupped portions struck up from the sections, the portions having apertures and intersecting slots in the top thereof, and buttons adapted to be secured to a floor covering near its edge engaged by said portions.
2. In an attachment for spreading and holding door coverings, a trame comprising sections adapted to interlock, the said interlocking sections being provided with engaging members and apertures respectively adapted to receive said engaging members, one of the interlocking sections being provided with slots and the other of said members being provided with studs slidable in said slots for retaining the sections in operative relation, resilient clasps struck from the sections, and buttons having heads engaged by the clasps, the said buttons being adapted for attachment to a iioor covering.
3. In an attachment for spreading and holding floor coverings, a frame comprising sections, one or" said sections having engaging members projecting from the upper surface thereof and formed integral therewith, studs on opposite sides of the engaging members, sections adapted to coact with the first mentioned sections having apertures to receive the engaging members and having slots to receive the studs whereby the sections are held in operative relation, clasps struck from the sections, and buttons having shanks adapted to be secured to a ioor covering, said buttons having heads engaged by the clasps.
