IvlARKING AND TRIP/[MING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2?, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RASMUS J. MELAND and Tntnooonn 0. Mon, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Lodi, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Marking and Trimming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to marking and trimming devices for the purpose of marking and trimming the side line or the ditch line along a railroad track and for other similar purposes; and it has for its object to produce a device of simple and improved construction which may be readily fitted; to and used in connection with an ordinary hand our "for the purpose of marking and trimming and thus indicating the desired line in a simple, rapid and eiiicient manner and far more securely and expeditiously than the same work could be performed by hand labor.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the inventio'n is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications withinsthe scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a railroad traclgshowing in front elevation a hand car to whiclrthe invention has been operatively applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view, showing the low or cutting member thrown back upon the hand car for transportation. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view otthe improved trimming and marking device, showing also one side bar of the frame of a hand car with which it is connected.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved device includes an attaching bar or beam 1, an extension bar which is hingedly connected with the attaching bar, and a plow beam 3 which is hingedly connected with the end of the extension bar in such' a manner as to swing in a plane ap-' proximately at right angles to the movement of the extension bar with reference to the attaching bar. Hinges 4 and 5 connect the extension bar with the attaching bar and with the plowbeam, respectively. The torward end of the plow beam is beveled, as will be best seen at 6 in Fig. it, to enable the rear end of the plow beam to swing downwardly below the horizontal plane of the front end of said beam. The plow beam 3 carries the standard 7 which is' connectedtherewith by braces 8, said standard carrying also a plow 9 of any suitable construction, said plow being made either right or left hand, as may be desired, according to the direction of movementg and the purpose for which it is to be em loyed. It is desired to be particularly understood that no limitation whatever is maqle 'with regard to the construction of the plow, butthat any wardly extending handles 12 ot' a hand car A of ordinary construction; said attachin bar has, however, been shown provided Wit slots 13 for the passage of bolts, it may be secured in position when the use of clips is not convenient. It, is obv ous that the attaching bar iscapable of ad ustment laterally with relation to the car withlnthe limits of its lengthlor of slots 13. The extension bar is provided with a hook H adapted to engage an eye or staple 15 upon the side member 16 of t e car frame. A brace 17 extending diagonally from the frame member 16 abuts upon the extension bar 2 adjacent to the outer end of the latter for the purpose of reinforcing the construction and enabling the extent-, sion bar to support any strain to which it? is liable to be subjected, and a flexible conwhereby the length of the necting member, such as a cable 18, connects v the plow standard 7 with an eye, or staple 19 upon the side member 16 of the car frame.
As will be readily seen from the foregoing track and at any desired distance from the side of the track. The sod turned by the plow may be subsequently removed by hand shoveling in the usual manner, and it is obvious that a straight and accurate line will thus be preserved in positive parallelism with the track, thus causing the work to be per formed very accurately and expeditiously. The plow, which is guided in the usual manner by means of the handles, may be slightly raised or lowered when necessary toconform to inequalities in the ground, such movement being possible on account of the beveled front end of the plow beam. \Vhen the device is not in operations it may be swung back upon the platform of the car to the position indicated in Fig. 8 of the drawings, and it may thus be very conveniently transported from one place to another.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
1. A device of the character described, an
attaching bar, an extension bar hingedly connected therewith, and a plow-carrying beam hingedly connected with the extension bar to swing in a plane approximately at right angles to the plane of movement of the extension bar. i
2. In a device of the character described,
an attaching bar, an extension balihin redly connected therewith, a plo\ vcarrymg eam hingedly connected with the extension bar to swing in a plane approximately at right angles to the movement of the latter, said plow-carrying beam being beveled at its front end, and means for connecting the device c'ith a hand car.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
