To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, 1WILLIAM Lao and JOSEPH C. BAYER, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Air-Pipe Damper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to that type of air pipe dampers that have means cooperating therewith for holding the damper to its different adjustments when set by the handle on the outside of the pipe, and it primarily has for its object to provide a damper construction of the character stated, of a simple and economical character by which the damper can be readily turned to the position desired and frictionally held locked to such position.
Our invention comprehends the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, specifically pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 2, is a section showing the damper as held frictionally locked to its adjusted position. Fig. 3, is a partial side elevation of the air pipe and shows the damper as adjusted to a nearly closed position. F ig. 4:, is a detail view of one of the bearing blocks for the ournals of the damper, hereinafter again referred to.
In the practical arrangement' of our invention, the same embodies a main clip plate A. preferably spear shaped as shown, perforated at the corners, as at a., to admit of its being' readily bolted or riveted to the damper D of the conventional form. A. designates another clip plate also formed with apertures so it can be readily bolted or riveted to the other side of the damper, said plate having a short trunnion a for engaging the bearing or reinforcing block o mounted in an opening f in the stove pipe F and riveted or bolted thereto.
Clip plate A has a long trunnion or shaft a2 held to turn in the combined bearing and Trunnion or shaft a2 has its outer end squared as at o3 to receive the bifurcated cam or eccentric head of the handle B, fulcrumed in such way on the pivot pin 7) as to normally hang pendent when the damper is adjusted to rotate freely on its end bearing E designates a fiat spring plate having a vertically elongated slot e so as to readily slip over the squared end of trunnion a2, the said plate E being in the nature of a bowed spring plate with one end extended to form a flat bearing portion e for seating against the outside of the air pipe to which it is held by one or more bolts or rivets e2.
F rom the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings the complete construction, and the manner in which our invention operates will be readily apparent.
It will be noticed that when the handle B is pendent and in a plane parallel with the vertical axis of the pipe, the eccentric or cam head of the handle will be free from compressing spring E and hence the damper with the handle and its clip plates .will be free to be turned to any position desired, it being' obvious that after swinging the damper to the desired position, see for example, Fig. 3, and turning such handle outwardly from the pipe and by bringing the cam head in position to sufiiciently compress the spring, the damper will be held locked to its set position; and to provide for an easy adjustment of the cam or eccentric handle, one end of spring E is loosely held against the outside of the pipe to allow it to creep as pressure is exerted on the plate.
By reason of securing the handle to the damper in the manner shown and described, slack between the damper and the pipe is taken up at all times and the position of the damper indicated by the position of the handle.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is
1. As an improvement in air pipe dampers, the combination with a pipe section having a pair of diametrically opposite openings, and a combined reinforcing block, and bearing in each of said openings, said blocks projecting on the inside of the pipe; of the damper, a pair of oppositely disposed clip members secured to the damper, each of which has a trunnion, one of said trunnions engaging the bearing at one side, the
other trunnion being extended through the other bearing or block, said tru'nnions each having a shoulder for abutting the bearing at their respective sides, the extended trunnion having its outer end apertured, a flat spring plate secured at one end to the pipe and having an elongated slot through which the long trunnion passes, a lever handle comprising a forked cam head eccentrically and pivot-ally mounted on the outer end of the extended journal, said cam head engaging said spring plate adjacent to its slot7 said spring plate being held between said lever and the adjacent part ol' the pipe section.
2. As an improvement in air pipe dampers, the combination with a pipe section with a pair of relatively large and diametrically opposite openings, a damper having a clip member on the opposite ends, each having an outwardly extended journal adapted to he extended into and through the pipe openings, a combined reinforcing and abutment block mounted on each of the said openings, and each having an aperture to receive the journals of the damper clip7 the outer end of one of the damper journals being squared, a handle having a bifurcated cam faced end pivotally mounted on the square section and a leaf spring secured to the pipe section and said spring having an elongated slot through Which the squared end of said square ended journal is projected7 said spring being located between said lever and the pipe section and held to be engaged by said lever, all being arranged substantially as shown and Jfor the purposes described.
