Obviously, bolt-s may be substituted in place of the wedged keys herein shown.
In Fig. 7, l have shown a form of fastener in which the lugs are'perforated in a transverse direction from that shown in the other figures of the drawing.- In this form, the keys are adapted to be entered in the direction of the length of the tie and in this form will serve thesa-rne purpose as in the application shown in the other figures of the drawing.
'In Fig. 8, I have shown the application of the principle of my device, wherein a fastener referred to as D appears. In this form, it is designed in the application that the upper face of the tie shall be slotted and that the fastener may be inserted in the manner shown in Fig. 8 and may be bolted and secured to the tie by means of a bolt as shown. In fact, the fastener may be made in many forms and applied in many ways without departing from the principle of luy invention.
The tie may be specially formed with depending lugs as .ll to accommodate their being placed upon stringere, as for use in bridgev work, and will serve a useful purpose in sui-h connection.
lt will be observed that in constructing the fastener (l with the lugs a depending through openings in the. upper face of the tie, there is provided an abutting 'surface for the edge of the bottom flange of the rail that will prevent any lateral movement and .will prevent theordinary and usual wedging effect of lateral 'movement of the rail upon thc ordinary form of fasteners that are in commercial use. It will be observed that the fastener C would have to be completely detached before the lateral bearing effect of the lugs would be destroyed.,

l. In ay railway tie and rail fastener, the combination with a tie provided with lateral projections therefrom and with perforated seats for parts of a rail fastener, of a rail fastener plate provided with an upwardly projecting portion adapted to bear against the rail,v with a hook like lugat the rear portion thereof adapted to enter and be supported in an opening in the tie and with a downwardly projecting locking lug adapted to be seated in a perforation in the tie and in abutting relation with the lower flange of the rail and suitable means for fastening the klockinglug to hold the rail fastening plate in place.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a metal tie having a central rib and laterally extended flange projections therefrom and laterally extended portions adapted to form, in conjunction with the main tie, a support for the rail, of a rail fastener formed of a plate provided with an upwardly turned portion adapted to engage the rail and with a rearwardly eX- tended portion adapted to engage perforated seats in the tie and with fastenin lugs deending from the lower portion o the plate adapted to be seated within openings in the tie and in position to abut against the lower flange of the rail, and provided with a key seat therethrough and a. key adapted to lit within the key-seats in the fasteners, substantially as described.
4. n a device of the class described, the combination with a railway tie, of a fastener formed of a plate having an upwardly turned portion adapted to engage a. rail, and having downwardly and rearwardly extend ing portions adapted to hook within openings in the tie and with abutting and fastening lugs extending downwardly from the lower face thereof adapted to be seated within openings in the tie and to abut against the lower flange of the rail, and suitable means for securing the fastening and abutting lugs in position to securely hold the rail upon the tie.
5. A railway tie and rail fastener comprising a tie substantially in Ill-beam form provided with lateral pro'ections therefrom in substantially the same orm as the tie and provided with oienings in the upper face thereof adapted or seating lugs, a rail fastener formed of a plate provided with-an upwardly turned portion adapted to engage the rail, with downwardly and rearwardly extending portions adapted to be seated within perforations in the tie and with abutting and fastening lugs depending from the lower portion thereof adapted to be seated within openings in the tie and provided with a key seat therein, and a suitable key for securing the fastening lugs in connect1on ,with the tie, substantially as shown.
6. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a railway tie provided with perforations therein., of a rail fastener consisting' 'of a plate provided with an upwardly turned und suitably reinforced portion adapted to bear upon the rail flange, t0 extend upwardly along the web thereof and to meet the lower edge of the top flange of the rail and with angularly formed rearward `extensions therefrom adapted to engage perforations in the tie and with fastening,r lugs dependin` from the lower portion of the plate and adapted to he seated withln perforations in the tie and provided with a key seat therein and a, key adapted to secure the fastening lugs 1n connection with the tie, substantially as described.
