To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHAN Mourns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sykesville, in the county of Jefferson, State-of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to tables, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed table having a novel construction of standard or base, which not only firmly supports the table top portion, but presents an ornamental appearance and is a useful structure.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved table. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

The improved device comprises a main standard formed in two parts 10-11 placed side by side, and with a cap 12 fitting over the standards and thus operating to not only hold the upper ends of the standard members in position, but also to provide means for the attachment of the table top 13. The table top is rigidly secured to the cap 12 by screws or other suitable fastening devices 14, as shown.

The lower ends of the standard members 10-11 are reversely inclined as shown at 15-16, and the standard members are likewise provided with transverse gains or recesses 17-18 near their lower ends, the recesses being located opposite each other, as shown. Formed in the confronting faces of the members 10-11 intermediate their ends are gains or recesses 19-20.

Fitting through the recesses 19-20 are transverse members 21-22, arranged in superimposed relations, these members having gains or recesses 23-24 in their confronting faces and of greater length than the thickness of the standard members 11-10, and fitting through these recesses are other transverse members 25-26 arranged side by side. The members 25-26 are likewise provided with gains or recesses 27-28 which fit around the standard members 10-11. By this means an effectual locking device is produced by which the members 10-11 are firmly united.

Fitting through the grains or recesses 17-18 are relatively long horizontal members 29-30 arranged in superimposed relations and likewise provided with gains or recesses 31-32 in their confronting faces, the latter recesses being of greater length than the width of the standard members 10-11, and extending through the recesses 31-32 are other relatively long members 33-34 arranged side by side and with gains or recesses 35-36 in their confronting faces and bearing around the standard members 10-11. By this means the standard members 10-11 are still further locked and supported near their lower ends.

The members 29-30 are provided near their outer ends with gains or recesses 37-38 and 39-40, while the members 33-34 are provided with similar gains or recesses 41-42 and 43-44 near their outer ends, these gains or recesses being similar to those in the other members above referred to.

Fitting through the recesses 37-38 of the members 29-30 are horizontal members 45-46, these latter members being provided with gains 01' recesses 47-48 of greater length than the thickness of the members 29-30, and fitting through the recesses 47-48 are vertical members 53-54, the latter being provided with recesses 55-56 in their confronting faces which fit around the members 29-30. The opposite ends of the members 29-30 are provided with vertical members 49-50 and horizontal members 57-58 similar to the members 45-46 and 53-54, and the members 33-34 are likewise provided with similar members 59-60 and 61-62 at one end and with members 63-64 and 65-66 at their other ends, as shown. The various horizontal and vertical members above noted are precisely alike, as shown. The lower ends of the vertical members are uniform, so that they form supports or feet for the standard 10-11, as shown in Fig. 1. The transverse members 29-30 and 33-34 together with their interlocked shorter members thus form a support for the standard members, and prevent lateral movement thereof.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be strongly and inexpensively manufactured, and not only forms a very substantial table support, but is likewise highly ornamental and attractive in appearance. The material employed may be of any required quality, and woods of different color and quality may be used for the difierent parts.

The improved device may be of any required size, and the table top member 13 may be of any desired from or size. The terminals of all of the members are reversely inclined as shown, to improve the appearance of the supporting members.

The members 2122 and 2526 constitute one set of the locking members, and one member of each set of the locking members is formed with the portion between one of its recesses and the end of the member idetachable as shown respectively at 51, to enable the parts to be assembled.

The detachable portions are secured to the members by screws or other fastening devices 52. 7

What is claimed is The combination in a table, of a vertical standard comprising a pair of vertical members, disposed face to face, and having recesses in their confronting faces, a table top supported upon said standard, a pair of relatively long transverse members arranged one above the other and fitting through the recesses of the standard members and provided with recesses in their confronting faces near the ends and with other recesses intermediate the end recesses thereof, another pair of relatively long transverse members arranged side by side and fitting through the intermediate recesses of the first mentioned pair of transverse members and provided with recesses fitting around the standard members, one of said transverse members having a detachable portion be tween its intermediate recess and one of the end recesses thereof, a detachable portion externally of one of the outer recesses, and fastening means for said detachable portions.
