CIGAR CUTTER AND LIGHTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. Mo- ANENY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar Cutters and Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar cutters and lighters and has for its principal objects to produce a combined cutter and lighter of simple and inexpensive construction, to avoid undue waste of the battery charge which supplies the current for the sparking device, and to attain certain other advantages hereinafter more fully appearing.
The invention consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined cigar cutter and lighter embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, showing the action of the cutter and lighter; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device With its movable parts in normal position; Fig. 4 is a top plan view with its movable parts in the position shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the rocking member on which the cutter blade is mounted.
As shown in the drawings, the device comprises a base 1 which is preferably a rectangular closed receptacle or box. Mounted on the base 1 are two parallel vertical side frames 2. Pivotally mounted on a cross rod or trunnions 3 which are journaled transversely of the side frames 2 is a tubular member 4. This tubular member 4 is provided with a false bottom 5 so that the upper portion of the tube constitutes an oil receptacle for the lighter. Sleeved on top of the tube l is a cap piece 6. This cap piece has a reduced tubular extension 7 in which a wick 8 is fitted.
Secured to the pivotal tubular member 1 is a horizontal plate 9 which extends forwardly therefrom. The front end portion 10 of this plate 9 is preferably circular and is provided with a perforation 11 whose circular walls are beveled or outwardly flaring as at 12.

Pivotally mounted between the side frames 2, adjacent to the bottom face of the plate 9, is a substantially U-shaped rocking member 13. On this rocking member 13 is secured a diagonally-disposed cutter blade l l. This cutter blade is arranged so that its cutting edge extends diagonally in front of the perforation 11 in the plate 9, so that the cutter is drawn substantially diagonally across said perforation when said plate and the tubular member 4 on which it is mounted, are tilted forwardly. The rocking member 13 is provided at its opposite rear end portions with outwardly extending trunnions 15 which are journaled in horizontally-alining perforations in the side frames 2, so that it will be rocked downwardly when the plate 9 is tilted forwardly and downwardly.
To yieldingly hold the plate 9 and the rocking frame 13 whose front end portion bears against the under side of said plate 9 in normal position, one side piece of said rocking member is provided at its rear end with a downturned extension 16 which has secured thereto one end of a coil spring 17 whose opposite end is secured to a stud 18 on the adjacent side frame 2.
The action of the spring 17 is to pull the downturned extension 16 forwardly and raise the rocking member 13 against the plate 9 and thereby hold the same in normal position and restore them to such position after they have been actuated.
At the rear of the side frames 2 is an up right post 19 which is mounted in an insulated bushing 20 in the top of the box or base 1. Near the top of this post 19 is secured a forwardly projecting horizontal plate or shelf 21. On this plate 21 is pivoted a plate 22 which is adapted to be oscillated in a horizontal plane. A resilient tongue or contact piece 23 is secured to the front end of the pivotal plate 22 so that its downturned free end portion lies normally in the path of the top of the burner tube 7 on the oscillatory tubular member 4.
The post 19 is connected with one pole of a battery, induction coil or other suitable source of electrical energy X which is located in the box 1, and the opposite pole of said battery or induction coil, as the case may be, is connected with the metallic box or one of the side frames 2 thereon. By this arrangement, the circuit is normally broken by the space between the top of the burner 7 and the contact piece 23, but when the burner is moved into contact with the contact piece 23 and then passed free of the same, a spark is created which ignites the oil-saturated wick.
The pivotal plate 22 is provided with a curved lateral extension 24; at its forward end which lies normally in the path of an upright stem 25 on the plate 9, whereby, when said plate 9 is tilted forwardly, said upright stem 25 will strike against the lateral projection 24 and shift the plate 22 to one side, so that the burner 7 will pass free of said contact piece 23 on its return stroke. A second lateral extension 26 is provided on the plate 22 at its rear end so that said upright stem 25 will strike the same on its return stroke and restore the plate 22 to normal position. To avoid a short circuit when the upright stem 25 contacts with either of the lateral projections 24, 26, said stem 25 is provided with an insulated portion 27. Also, to avoid any possibility of a short circuit bet-ween the bottom of the plate 21 and the top of the burner 7 a block of insulating material 28 is secured on the under side of said plate 21.
Pivotally mounted between the side frames 2 is a receptacle 29 which is located under the opening 11 in the plate 9 so as to receive the cuttings from the ends of the cigars. This receptacle 29 is preferably substantially V-shape in vertical section so that the contents thereof may be readily removed therefrom when it is dumped.
Obviously the device admits of considerable modification without departing from my invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction and arrangement shown.
1V hat I claim is:
1. The combination of a to and fro moving lighter, a plate projecting therefrom in the direction in which the lighter is movable, said plate being adapted to be engaged by the hand to move it and the lighter, means for igniting the lighter, a pivoted arm or lever situated at one side of the said plate, and means to yieldingly press said arm or lever against said plate, whereby said lighter will be automatically moved to and yieldingly held in the position from which it is adapted to be moved by the action of the hand on said plate, the portions of plate and arm in contact having a differential movement.
2. The combination of a support, a lighter pivoted thereto, an igniting device, a plate projecting from said lighter adapted to be engaged by the hand to move the lighter, a lever or arm pivoted to said frame eccentric to the pivot of the lighter, and situated contiguous to one side of said plate, and a spring acting on said arm or lever to press the same yieldingly against said plate to move the lighter to and yieldingly hold it in the position from which it is movable by the hand applied to the plate.
3. The combination of a to and fro moving lighter, a plate projecting therefrom in the direction in which the lighter is movable, said plate being adapted to be engaged by the hand to move it and the lighter, means for igniting the lighter comprising an electrode in the path of movement of the lighter and a circuit which includes a portion of the lighter having contact with said electrode, a pivoted arm or lever situated at one side of the said plate, and means to yieldingly press said arm or lever against said plate whereby said lighter will be automatically moved to and yield ingly held in the position from which it is adapted to be moved by the action of the hand on said plate, the portions of plate and arm in contact having a differential movement.
4. The combination of a to and fro movable lighter, an electrode supported in the path of movement of a part of the lighter, a circuit including said part of the lighter and said electrode, a movably mounted plate carrying said electrode, and a finger carried with the lighter and actuating said electrode-carrying plate to move the electrode relative to the path of the part of the lighter adapted to engage said electrode.
5. The combination of a supporting frame, a lighter oscillatorily mounted on said frame in a vertical position, a horizontal plate on said lighter, a rocking carrier mounted on said frame beneath said plate, a spring connected to said rocking carrier so as normally to hold the same in contact with the plate and thereby hold said plate and lighter in normal position, an electrical contact device located normally in the path of said oscillatory lighter but movable out of contact therewith, and a source of electrical energy having one pole connected with the lighter and the other pole connected with said contact device.
6. The combination of a to and fro movable lighter, an electrode arranged in the path of the lighter and adapted to ignite the same when it is moved in one direction, means for shifting said electrode out of the path of the lighter when it is moved in one direction prior to the return stroke of the latter, and a source of electric energy hav ing one pole connected with the lighter and its other pole connected with said electrode.
