CLARENCE It. BROWN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 ELMER E. BROWN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SECTIONAL SASI-I-WEIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAnnNon R. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sectional Sash-Weights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash weight sections having improved means for joining one to another. Its leading object is to provide a construction that will permit the section or sections in a window box to be extended by the ready connection of additional sections therewith, that will prevent the sec tions from being detached excepting when occupying a relation approximating a right angle, that will reduce to a minimum the movement at the joints when the sections are suspended in their operative position, and that will provide joints that can be formed inexpensively by the use of green molds.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation representing two connected sections of a sash weight embodying the improvements, Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same viewed at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the side opposite that shown in Fig. 1.
Each weight section has at the upper end thereof the jaws 2 with the tongue 3 between them and the opening 4 between the jaws and beneath the tongue. The tongue, while having the same general character and curve as the jaws, extends beyond them longitudinally and has the recess 3 therein. At the other end, each section has the two jaws 5, of like character, separated by the recess 6, and extending longitudinally and laterally in opposite directions to the jaws 2 which respectively lie in the Vertical planes of the j aws 5. A jaw 7, extending longitudinally 1n the same direction and laterally in an opposite direction to the jaws 5, lies opposite the recess 6 in the vertical plane of the opening 4.
When sections are held approximately at right angles to each other, the jaw 7 of one can be entered in the recess 4: of the other and the jaws 2 of the first will pass the jaws 50f the second, the backs of the parts 2 and 3 being entered past the oints of the corresponding parts 5 and Upon turning the one into alinement with the other section with which it is thus connected, the jaws 2 and 5 en age, the back of the tongue 3 and the jaw I engage, and the tongue engages the top of the recess, by which the further movement of the sections, past the alined relation, is prevented.
The weight is supported by passing a cord 8 through the opening 4, the recess 3' receiving the cord which is thus permitted to lie in the vertical line containing the gravity centers of the sections.
Having described my invention, I claim 2- 1. A sash weight section provided at one end with a pair of similar jaws having a recess between them together with an oppositely extending jaw in the plane of said recess, and provided at the other end with a pair of jaws extending oppositely to said jaws first named, a tongue between and extending beyond said second named pair of jaws, and a recess between said second named pair of jaws.
2. A sash weight section provided at one end with a pair of similar jaws having a recess between them together with an oppositely extending jaw in the plane of said recess, and having at the other end a pair of jaws together with a tongue extending oppositely to said jaws first named and a recess between said second named pair of jaws.
3. A sash weight section having a pair of similar jaws with their points disposed transversely to the length of said section, a recess between said jaws and a jaw opposite said recess with its point disposed oppositely to those of said first named jaws, in combination with a sash weight section having a pair of jaws and a tongue with their points extending in the same general direction transversely to the length thereof and a recess between said last named jaws.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name this 14th day of June, 1910, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
CLARENCE R. BROWN.
