WILLIAM E. DUNNING, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MOCASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PAD-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
Application filed December 9, 19.08- Sprial No 466,725.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. Du'NmNo, a citizen of the United States, residing in Alliance, in the count of Stark and State of Ohio, have invente certain new and useful Improvements in Pad-Holders, of which the 0 lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a pad holder, and more particularly to a holder adapted to detachably hold a salesbook or pad used by merchants in recording and keeping their accounts and rendering bills for goods purchased.
One ob'ect ofthe invention is to provide a holder of sim le construction, durable and easily operated for holding a pad or salesbook.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for a pad or similar device having arms to engage the opposite sides of the pad at its bound end, one or. more of the arms being pivoted to permit the insertion in and removal of the pad from' the holder at will.
Referring to the drawings,-wherein I have illustrated one example of my invention Figure 1 is a erspective view of a holder showin a pa or salesbook in positlon 1n the hol er. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder, and pad, the latter being broken awa to facilltate the illustration. Fig. 3 is a si e elevation. Fig. 4 is a rear view of a portion of the holder. Fig. 5 isa view of a holder showing a modification of the invention.
In the drawings, 1 indicates as a whole the holder, comprising a base 1, and a back or end plate 1".
2 indicates a pad comprising a series of sheets 2", preferably bound together at one end by suitable staples 3. v
Any well known construction of pad may be used. As shown in the drawings, the pad 2 consists of a series of sets of sheets each set comprising an original and a duplicate slip,--and a carbon sheet 2 adapted for use by merchants inrendering bills for goods purchased and in keeping their accounts.
2 indicates a protector for the carbon. This protector is connected w1th the back of the pad 2, and folds over the free ends of sheets 2. The carbon 2 may be secured to the inner surface of the protector at or adjacent to its folded portion.
4, 4, indicate a pair of arms extending upward at the opposite sides of the base 1 near one end, and having inturned ends 4, 4, adapted to lie between adjoining slips of the pad and substantially to ip a plurality of sets of slips between sai ends 4, 4, and the base 1, and thus secure the pad to the holder. The inturned ends 4, are preferably bifurcated, as shown at 4". The bifurcations 4 are made long enough so that they extend on either side of the staples 3 on the line of said staples. By thus constructing and arranging t e arms in this manner, they prevent any sidewise or lateral movements of the pad relative to the holder, which would finally result in the pad becoming loose on the back 1. In the preferred form of the invention, the arms 4 4 are ivoted to one, preferably the back, face of ti l as shown at 4 in Fig. 4, 1n order that the pad may be readily attached and detached from the holder.
In the modification of the invention, illustrated in Fig. 5, one of the arms 6 is rigidly secured to or formed integral with the base 1, while the other arm 6 is pivoted to the base 1" at 6.
5 indicates a cover for the holder, hinged at 5 to the base 1. The cover may be provided with a front portion 5", and flexibly united to the cover 5.
I am aware of the fact that heretofore, as for example, is shown in Letters Patent No. 572,022 to J. H. Murphy, it has been pro osed to provide on the back of a salesboo holder swinging arms arranged to engage the leaves of a salesbook or pad in order to prevent the lateral movement of the leaves on the holder; but I haveireatly simplified the said- M'urohy paten con. struction, as the swinging arms themselves of my improved construction hold 'the pad to the back preventing both vertical and ateral movement of the pad on the back, and they therefore overcome, the need of the additional elements for accomplishing this result required by the said urphy patented construction.
To those skilled in the art of making holders for salesbooks, many alterations 1n construction and widely differing embodimentfl e base,
substantially parallel to said base and bifurcated, for the purposes described, and means on the base cooperating with. said pivoted arm to hold a pad in place on the base.
2. In a holder for a pad, the combination of a base adapted to support a pad comprising a series of leaves bound together by binding means along one end,'and a pan of arms, one of which is pivoted to the back of the base, the free ends of the arms being inturned and bifurcated and arranged between two adjoining leaves of the pad with the bifurcations disposed upon opposite sides of the pad binding means for holding the pad against vertical, lateral and twisting movements relatively to said base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM E. DUNNING.
