LAMP-BURNER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WIRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has special reference to the portion of the lamp burner by which the wick is raised and lowered with the object of providing a device associated therewith and adapted for applying a holding friction thereto so as to prevent the wick shifting or jarring down in use. The tendency of the wick to jar down is specially present where lamp burners are employed on vehicles,- notably automobiles, as it is evident that where jar and vibration are present and cause the wick to fall, the light is diminished and requires constant attention.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a helical spring of wire around the wick raiser shaft preferably between the two star wheel wick raisers with the free ends of the wire from opposite sides of the shaft passing off in the same direction through openings provided between or at the union of the base or body of the air distributer and the interior conical cap member. These openings serve the purpose of hold-fasts to said free ends to insure the more perfect operation of the friction spring.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of so much of a lamp burner as is necessary to fully illustrate my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the dotted line as, m, of Fig. 1.

1) is the air distributer which rises from the base or body 6, the lower end of the wick tube being securely fastened to the base or body Z) at the central portion.
0 represents a cap member of conical form in cross section setting down upon a ledge at about the union of the base I) and the air distributer b, and said parts are preferably secured together by solder.
(Z represents the wick raiser shaft passing across through the base or body 6, and d the star wheel wick raisers secured in a spaced apart relation upon said shaft and passing through slots provided therefor in the wick tube.

The extreme ends 0, c of the wire spring (2 may be turned upward.
In the operation of the device, the arrow, Fig. 1, indicates the turning direction for raising the wick. In this movement, the tendency is to wind up the spring or helix at the wire end eand tighten the same on the shaft of the wick raiser. In turning down the wick, the tendency is to wind up the spring or helix at the wire end 6 Thus the turning of the wick raiser in either direction provides such a friction as will make it slightly difiicult to either raise or lower the wick, and such friction is sufficient to make it impossible for any vibration or jarring action to affect the wick in either direction. I am aware that devices have been heretofore produced, having in mind the performance of this same function. I therefore do not claim broadly the application of a friction to the wick raiser device of a lamp burner to prevent the wick jarring down.
IVhile I have shown and described the helical spring of wire of my invention as placed around the wick raiser shaft between the two star wheels, I do not limit my invention in this respect as said spring may be located at some other place and perform the same function.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination in a lamp burner with the wick tube, the wick raiser shaft and means connected therewith for raising the wick on the turning of the shaft, of a helical wire spring surrounding said shaft with the free ends of the wire passing off in the same general direction, and means for engaging said free ends of the wire for holding the same in position against displacement.
2.
