' Be it known that l, BENJAMIN F. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Placerville,in the county of San 'll/ligue State` of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Railway- Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to bev a full, clear, and exact description or" the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to metal railway ties, and has for one of its objects to iin- .prove the construction and increase the efciency and utility of devices of this character. A
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this charactery whereby the rails may be adjustably sup orted upon the tie, and the rails held firm y from movement, and thus maintained in position to resist the severe strains to which devices of this character are subjected.
With tliesennd other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features or construction as hereinafter shown and described and 'then .specifically pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of the referred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is av sidefelevation of one ot' the improved ties with the rails in position thereon and in transverse section, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fi 2, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the 'adjustable rail clamp detached.
The improved device coni rises n. base or body l0, referably channe shaped transversely, w iereby a horizontal bottom and `vertical side members are produced, as
shown. The` base is referably rolled or pressed from plate stee of suitable strength, and is formed with a depressed intermediate portion whereby terminal projections 1l are Y produced at the ends, the inner portions of the projections overhanging as shown at 12.-
The rails represented at 13 are designed to bear upon the upper edges of the side menibers vwith theirl base flanges at one side bearin beneath the overhan 12, as shown. By this means the outer e ges of the rails vare maintained in position, and prevented from upward movement. Slidably located within theA baseniember 10 are substantially U- l shaped locking locking member bearing against the sides of connecting portion of the U-sliaped member bearing upon the. upper'face of the bottom ortion of the base, as shown. The sides of the lil-shaped member 14?y project upwardly as shown at 15 and with their inner ends overhanging at 16 to hear over the inner edges of the base tlanges of thel rails.

By this means. the member le may be clamped in position relative to the base member l0, and adjusted longitudinally of the latter within the range of the slot 17..
. lExtending transversely of the member 14.- and Within the same near its ends are couibined stay bars and adjusting bolt guides 22, the stay bars being rigidly secured to the sides of rivets 28, :is shown. Extending between the sides of the member le are similar combined stay bars and adjusting boltguides 24pref" erably secured in place by rivets 25.- EX- tending through the members 22-24 are relatively heavy bolts 26, each having a head 27 at one end and carrying a. clamp nut 28 at the end, and preferably provided also with jam nuts '29. By .this simple means the members 14 maybe forcibly adjusted outwardly to clamp them againstthe base flanges of the rails, and thus rigidly support the rails in position. The bolts 26-18 thus coact to rigidly support the rail, and prevent displacement. By this arrangement also it will be obvious that any looseness which may occur between the partsvowing to the severe concussione and pounding action to which the rails are s ubjected, may be readily taken up, by-simply rotating the nuts 20-21 and 28,29.
The various portions ofthe device except the clam bolts are formed of plate metal, .preerab y of steel, and pressed or bent into the required shape, andmay be galvanized or otherwise coated: to prevent corrosion.
