WAGON-STANIDARD Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. STIER- HEIM, citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Standards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in standards for wagons or the like and has for its object to provide a standard which will be simple in construction and yet durable and capable of being swung down out of the way when it is desired to unload the wagon or in any other instance where the presence of said standard would be found objectionable.
Another object of this invention is to provide a standard sohinged to the bolster as to form a rigid support when in use, and to provide an automatic locking means to hold the same in an upright position, said means being capable of being readily re leased when it is desired to swing the stand ard out of the way.
With these and other objects in View as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain construction, arrangement and combination of the parts that I shall hereafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolster with two of my improved standards applied; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and showing the spring pressed locking key for holding the standard in position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of my improved standard which may be composed of sheet metal or cast as may be desired and which may be of any design found most preferable. The rings 2, of usual construction, are pro vided to hold a stake when it is found necessary to use same.
The body portion 1 is provided on one side of its base with the angularly disposed foot 3 which is designed to rest against the top of the bolster A and extend around the side thereof having its extremity returned to extend along the under side of the bolster terminating at a point about opposite the base of the standard.
The foot 3 is hinged at its extremity to the under side of the bolster, being curled at its end to receive the staple 5 designed to engage said bolster.
The body portion of the standard is provided at its base opposite the foot 3 with the laterally extending plate 6 which is designed to rest against the top of the bolster serving to brace said standard. Such plate is provided near its outer edge with the aperture 7 which is designed to receive the spring pressed locking pin 8 carried by the bolster and best shown in Fig. 3. The specific construction of said pin is immaterial as it forms no part of this invention. Said pin, however, in normal position, should extend above the top of the bolster 4 so as to automatically engage the plate 6.
It will be clear that upon depressing the locking pin 8 the standard may be swung down out of the way as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. WVhen returned to anupright position the pin 8 will automatically engage the plate 6 thereby locking the same in such position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple structure for the purpose intended, which may be adapted to different designs and sizes of bolsters, requiring no special construction of the same except for the locking pin 8, and which may be cheaply manufactured and sold to be applied to wagons or other vehicles already in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A standard comprising a body portion, a foot carried by said portion and adapted to extend around the edge of a bolster from the upper face to the lower face thereof, means for pivotally connecting the extremity of said foot to the lower face of the bolster, and means for locking said standard in an upright position.
2. A standard comprising a body portion provided at its base with a foot adapted to extend around the edge of a bolster, means carried by said foot for pivotally connecting the extremity thereof to the under side of the bolster, a laterally extending plate provided at the base of the standard opposite the foot and means for locking said standard in an upright position.
3. A standard comprising a body portion provided on one side of its base With a foot adapted to extend around the edge of a bolster, a laterally extending plate formed on the base of the standard opposite said foot and provided with an aperture, means for pivotally connecting the extremity of said foot to the under side of the bolster and a spring pressed locking key carried by said bolster and adapted to engage the aperture of the plate.
4. A standard comprising a body portion,
a foot carried by said portion adapted to' extend around the edge of a bolster, means for pivotally connecting the extremity of said foot to the under side of the bolster, a laterally extending plate arranged at the base of the standard opposite said foot, and means carried by the bolster for automatically engaging said plate.
5. A standard comprising a body portion, a foot carried by said portion and adapted to extend around the edge of a bolster, said foot being coiled at its extremity to receive a staple adapted to engage the under side of the bolster, a laterally extending plate ster for automatically locking the standard in an upright position.
6. A standard comprising a body portion, a foot carried by said portion and adapted to extend around the edge of a bolster, means for pivotally connecting the extremity of said foot to the under side of the bolster, a laterally extending plate arranged at the base of the standard opposite said foot and a spring pressed locking key carried by the bolster and adapted to engage the plate.
7. A standard comprising a body portion, a foot carried by said portion, means for pivotally connecting the extremity of said foot to the under side of a bolster, a laterally extending plate arranged at the base of the standard opposite said foot and adapted to rest against the top of the bolster, and means carried by the bolster for automatically engaging said plate.
