Letters Patent No. 96,913, dated November 1G, '1869.
IMPROVED vFRIC'JTIGHT-CLUTCH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same ham, in the county of N ew Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in Clutch- Pulley; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be, a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of' this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a face view.

This invention relates to an improvement in the mechanical attachment commonly known as clutchpulleys, that is, the arrangement of a pulley upon the driving-shaft, so that, at the pleasure of the opery atol, the pulley may be stopped or caused to revolve with the shaft, and in which a pulley, loose upon the shaft, its inner surface madeconical, is combined with a plate, the edge of which is inclined, and so as to tit the inner surface ot` the pulley, the said plate arranged upon the shaft so as to revolve'freely with the shaft, and yet so as to be moved longitudinally thereon, so that the said plate may he forced into the pulley,.(or

The invent-ion consists- First, in forming upon the inner surface of the pulley, one or more spiral slots or grooves, and combined with a sliding bar upon the surface of the frictionplate, operating radially, or nearly so, so that when -the said bar is forced out, it will enter the slot -or groove in the pulley, and, hy the inclination or spiral form of the said slot, draw the pulley on to the friction-plate, or -v'ice Iversa, as the case may be.
Second, in the arrangement of an arm, so as to slide longitudinally upon the shaft, and combined, by means of an inclined slot, with a radial bar or bars, so that by `the movement of' the said arm, the said bar is dra-wn back or forced out positively.
Third, in the arrangement of' the said arm, in combination with the friction-plate and sliding bars, so
.that when the bar or l ars are withdrawn, the plate itself will also be drawn from the pulley, to fi'ee the pulley from the pla-te.
A is the driving-shaft, upon which the pulley B is arranged, so as to revolve freely thereon.
The inner surface of the said pulley is made conical, as seen in fig. 4, and a friction-plate, C, is fitted to correspond to the inner surface of the pulley, and this plate C is placed upon the shaft, and caused 'to revolve with the shaft, by means of a key, (see iig. 3,)

The inner surface of the said pulley is grooved, or slots are formed therein, (here represented as slots a, and may be one or vmore in number.) These slots are formed, to a greater or less extent, around the surface of the pulley, in a spiral form.
ln the platev C, I arrange one or more sliding-bars, D, here represented as two, upon opposite sides, and arranged in suitable guides, so as to bc moved radially upon the said plate. The sliding bars are constructed so that as they are moved outward, they will enter` the slots a, before mentioned; that is to say, when the plate' C is drawn out from the pulley, as denoted in broken lines, lig. 4, the bars will enter thelowest part of the incline or spiral slot, and as they revolve, will run along the said slot, drawing the pulley on to the plate, or the plate into the pulley, as the case maybe, here represented as dra-wing the plate into the pulley, until the friction between the plate andthe pulley hecomes so great that the pulley will revolve ywith Ithe plate; then,.when"the hars are withdrawn, the pulley is released, and will run from the friction-surface.
To operate the bars, I arrange au arm, E, for each bar upon a head, F,.so as to slide longitudinally'on the shaft, and yet keyed thereon, so as to revolve with the shaft.
The said arms extend toward thc plate, and are provided, each with a slot, e, inclined, and into each of the slots a pintle, f, on the. b'ars D, connects the bars D to the arm F, and the slots inclined, so that when the bars are moved in 011e direction, they will force. their respective bars radially outward, and in the other direction, will draw them in', by 1:)1ef`erence,'con structed so that by forcing the arms toward the plate, they will throw their arms outward, and 'vice tersa.
By this last-,named form of slots, when the arm is drawn out, as seen in fig. 4, so as to withdraw the bars D, the pintle of the bars havi-ng reached the end of thevslot, the further movement of the arms will draw the plate from the pulley until arrested by a stop, n, on the shaft.
Vhile I prefer to allow the longitudinal movement which I have described, 4to the plate C, it will be evident that the plate C may be fixed rigidly to the shaft, and the pulley allowed a slight longitudinal movement, so
Ithat the grooves in the pulley will draw the pulley on to the plate.
By this construction, the action of my clutch is positive to the fullest extent, and being constructed without springs, is not liable to the difficulties or iincertain action in clutches in which vsprings are em ployed. l v 1 do not wish 'to be understood as broadly claiming the forcing of a conical surface into a pulley, for the purpose ot causing the pulley to revolve in consequence erate. the said. bars substantially in the manner and .for the purpose set; forth.
