FREDERICK NEVINS, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO MOREWOOD STANDARD SAFETY DEVICES CO.,

ANCHOR-BOLT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Nrvixs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchor-Bolts, set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to anchor bolts particularly adapted for use in connection with safety window cleaning apparatus.
The object of the invention is to provide for the anchorage ot' bolts of the above typebetween courses of brick, terra cotta blocks or blocks of any well known 'material and size and in a manner such that the anchoring means shall be universal and equally well adapted Jfor use with bricks or blocks of varying sizes.
further object of the invention is to provide for the utilization of the window frame in etecting the anchorage of the bolt.
Further objects of the invention are to provide tor the general improvement in and the strengthening of an anchor bolt of the ktype described.
The above will be pointed out more in detail in the accompanying claims, which should be read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this application and in which,
Figure l is a pl'an view, with parts broken away and parts in section, showing the relative location and arrangement of an anchor bolt embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is ay perspective view ot'. a preferable einl'iodiinent ot' thc anchor bolt: Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken immediately in the rear otl the guard-flange and showing the yrelation of the anchorage to the overlying and underlying building blocks or bricks; and Fig. 4 shows a modification iii the contour ot' the anchor bolt. l
This anchor boltv comprises projecting pai'ts of any usiia.l"construction, namely, the bolt head l, neck 2, and guard-flange 3.
It has heretofore been customary to connect the guard flange with a rearwardly extending web of a width not exceeding the diameter ot' the flange 3 and to provide for the anchorage ol this web by a plurality oll extensions extending at right angles to one another and providing oil'set lips to enil'irace a brick about :it least. two edges at right angles one to the other; This construction Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 6,
Patented Aug. so, 1910. 1910. serial No. 553,697.
necessitated the provision of an anchor bolt. of a size to conform exactly to the size ot' the bricks or building blocks to be employed land was limited in strength to the strength of the narrow web connecting with the llange 3. y
To overcome the limitation. the applicant employs a flat web portion er, cast integrally with the flange zl and extending laterally beyond the tlange 3 into the projection and 65 with its outer edge G substantially flush with the inner face 7 of the flange 3. The web also continues rearwardly into a connecting portion which is provided with a lateral extension 9 at its end. r[he lateral exten- '70 sions and t) terminate at the san-ie distance from and at the saine side of the axis orV center line of the throat 2 and are provided with offset anchoring lips l0, 1l and l2,
respectively. '15- To strengthen the attachment oit'h/e web-, el. to the bolt headbuttresses lit/'and l5 at right angles to the web 4' andA at opposite sides thereof are cast integrally with the web 4 and flange 3. 80
From the drawings'it is apparent that the web constructioncomprising the lateral extensions 5 andtl'and the connecting portion 8 form a substantially flattened U shaped web to one corner of which the bolt head structure l etc. is fixed.
The above anchor bolt construction is desigi'ied to be built into la building wall at the proper elevation above the sill ot' a window opening. The eiitii'e webstrur-.ture 5. S, t) is 90 placed flat against top surface ot a brick or building b lock lt with the do\\'ii\\'ardly pro- -l'ectiiig lips l0 and ll occupying the crack between the block 16 and the vertical outer wall ot' the sash weight. box 1T olI the win- 95 dow t'ranie. 'l`lie straight edgey `ol the leg 5 is arranged to lie lliisli with the window opening surface 1H ot', the block lt' vwhich necessitates ii'ierely a small nick it) heilig `formed iu the edge. thercoll to accoiniiiodatt` the butti'ess 15. The brick or block 2() of the next tier is placed over the web structure and mortar covered top surface ol block lli and is likewise provided with a nick 2lV lo aecomi-nodate the bultress 1l, 105 while its inner lace engages the upward extending lips l1 and 123.
l lu completing the window construction l thc side l`ranic or window trim 22 is secured l tol tlic.\\'all in an ordinaryv manner as by 110 screws 2? so as to overlap tlie leg 5 and elainp over its edge G. This triin serres to look the anchor bolt construction in the nail in addition to the locking; of the inortar filling;l between blocks.
By reason ot the facttliat. tlie legs 5 and 9 extend only to one side vol? the structure mnd lips sncli as lO, ll, l2 and 13 are pio vided onlj,v yin a single plane this anchor oonstruction adapts itself to an)Y size of building block without..requiring the formation of recesses to accommodate ret-aiiiing -ips lt niay, therefor@ be terinedl an universal anchor bolt.
ln the figures the reveal at the Window opening is oni)v that provided by one tier of bricks although it to be understood that thil number ot tiers is in'nnaterial so long` as the looking lips l0, ll, l2 and engage over the inner edges of the inner tier as shown.-
filtliougli thisI anchor bolt nn f be foi-ined of an)Y suitable material, it is pi eferred that 'the saine be east fry/in bronze because of its Combined strength and weather resisting qualities.
l1 is, of eonrse, to be nnderstood that actual contour of the web portions of anchor bolt may fai-y and still embody features ot this invention. For instance Fig. #l shows a lweb Construction of modified contour 'which also is an embodiment of this inif'ention as covered by the accompanying Claims. 7
lll/*lint 'is claimed and what is desired to be secured b v United States Letters Patent is l. n universal anchor bolt Comprising a projecting bolt head and a rearwardly tending fiat web portion and a plnrality 'of fiat legs lying in the plane of said web portion and extending laterallyY from the sa W- provided with an olfthe tilt, the
side thereof and eaen set anchor lip, said lips occupying the saine plane at right angles to t-lieplane of said web portion and substantially parallel to vtbe axis o1c said projecting bolt head.
2. An universal' anchor bolt eoinprisingi` tlie bolt head l, the throat 2, the guard vflange 3, the web nieniber east integral. with the flange i?) and having the laterally extending lef; 5 with its edge tlusli with the rear fare of the flange and provided with an otl'set anchor lip at its end and haring a rearwardly and laterallyv extending web portion providing a second oliset anchor lip in the saine plane as tliat at the end ot leg 5.
3. An anchor bolt Comprisingl a project-- ingl boit head; a lguard llange adapted to lie tlush against the building n'all of a window opening; a neel Connecting' said guard flange and ,raid bolt head: and a reaiwrvrdli.Y and laterally7 extending fiat web portion lixed to said guard flange and haringan exnosed edge extending laterally at right angles to the axis ot' said bolt head and in the saine plane as the rear face ot said guard flange so as to lie itlush with the snraeeo't'abuilding Wall at a n'iinlow oiliening.
ln eonibinarion in building consumeA4 tion, an anchor bolt haring an outer engageable 'part projecting into the window openingx and a 'lat web portion extending rearwardly with its edge solos-fantiallj,Y Yliusli with the Window opening surface of the reveal? lying betwe' two courses building bloelrs, and having offset anelioring means solely at the inner edge of the inner tier of said reveal.
