PACKAGE FOR MATCHES.

To all whom-it may concern:

Be it .known that I, THEODOR VON DEY- LEN, manufacturer, a subject of the King Matches, of which the following is a speoification.

This invention relates to the well-known, folded pasteboard, thin packages for matches, and its novel feature consists in a outside, and Fig. 7 represents special process of manufacturing such packages cheaply.

The invention is .represented on the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a bottom plan of an unfolded strip of pasteboard Without matches having a line of rupture incised therein, and Fig. 2 a like view with a perforated line of rupture; Fig. 3 shows the holder in perspective; Fig. ,4, shows the arrangement of a holder in a pocket-receptacle after the folded flap has been torn 011", Fig. 5 a filled package comprising three separate small holders, while Fig. 6'shows the empty unfolded strips of pasteboard as seen from the the manufacture of double packages. a The package consists, as is particularly seen from Figs. 1 and2, of simple rectangular strips of pasteboard and can conse-' quently be cut without waste from sheets of pasteboard. The ends a of these strips are providedwith a composition for igniting the matches, while at the rupturing edge of the op osite end, at which the flap d is to be folded, a .groove, preferably incised in the form of a. line of rupture b, or perforation c is provided. In special instances two lines of rupture in this fold may be incised or impressed at a definite distance. Likewise, if desired, a line of rupture or perforationsh may be incised atv the edge of the ignition surfacefi The applying of the ignition composition on the one end a of the stripfis very important, be: cause not only is this flap stiflened thereby andthe provision of closure slits and, cor respondingly, the punching of tongues on' the opposite flap is rendered unnecessary, but in first place it enables a large number of packages to be provided inhundreds at once with igniting composition. For this purpose the composition is applied before the sheets of pasteboard are cut into strips,

the individual sheets, from which the packages are out, being superposed like, roofing tiles in such manner that only the parts which are to be covered with the composition are exposed. In this manner 400 and more packages can be covered with composition' simultaneously, when 20 sheets of pasteboard, each of which when out sufiices in the manner indicated. I

The insertion of the matches and the folding over of the flap d is facilitated by the lines of rupture, because by simply folding the part 0? upward an abutment for the match heads isformed, so that the flap can be folded over and aflixed by one single manipulation. In addition, the edge of rupture or its line enables the holder to have a suitable size after the separation of the flap al, in order to be able to put it' at once into a suitable pocket-receptacle without using a knife or scissors (Fig. 3)., The matches themselves are provided with an incised line of'rupture e, while the rece tacles have an up turned lip f, which hol s the'packa'ge Patented Aug. 30, 1910.

The dimensions are such that the edge of rupture b or '0 coincides as nearly as possible with the top edge 9 of the box and thus gives a certain hold to the package in the receptacle. The purpose of the abovementioned line of rupture h at the edge of the composition is for simplifying the latter being torn off when the same is to be employed in suitable match stands or holders.

'- Preferably a large number of connected holders, as illustrated by way of example in Figs. 5 and 6,,i's filled with matches and the holders are preferably provided at their place of separation with perforated lines 2', so that the connected holders can be put-on to the market. The consumer will then be able readily to separate one of the filled holders,

as required, along the perforation 2'. In this manner work is considerably facilitated both during the checking and during the despatch of the packages etc.

It wi be observed that the matches are inserted in the same manner as in the illustrative embodiments according to Figs. 1 and 2, while when the two halves are folded together along the edges 0 a double holder is obtained which is filled at both sides, each half being capable of being readily separated along the perforation c and placed-in the pocket-box.

I claim A packa e for matches composed of a number of %iolders placed side by side and made from a single piece of paste board and separated ,by weakened lines from each other, each of said holders having a weakened llne near one end and a plurality of weakened lines at the other end, the top part being adapted to fold down over the matches, and-the bottom part being adapted to fold upwith its edge over the edge of the to part, an igniting composition being applie simultaneously to the outside of the bottom part of all the holders, thereby stifiening the whole package while allowin the holders to be torn o in succession, siiistantially as described.
