To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barbourville, in the county of Knox and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests for Car-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to head rests, and more particularly to the type intended to be clamped to the arm of a. car seat. The form of rest being similar to a form already used, but my invention relates to the support for the rest, being so constructed as to accommodate itself to arm rests of various thicknesses.

The form above is for illustrative purposes only, and various forms may be used within the scope of the following specification and appended claim, and drawings thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied to a car seat. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one member of the clamp, and Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the other member.

As shown there is the usual bail-shaped frame 1, provided with the fabric 2, affording a support for a cushion or the like. The arms of the frame 1 are coiled as at 3 near their ends and have the extended arms at, which are bent inwardly as at 5. The fastener consists of two members 6 and 7, which are adjustable to accommodate the arm 8 of the seat, which may be of various thicknesses. Member 6 is made of thin metal showing an angular portion or tongue 9, at right angles thereto, said part 9 being adapted to slide in ways in the other member. The edges of part 6 are bent as shown, partly folded against the part 6, and gradually increasing in angularity until they reach a perpendicular position on a line i with the rib formed by the bent portion 9. These edges extend above the rib formed by plates 6 and 9 as at 10, and are apertured as at 11 to receive a pintle 12, which passes through the coils 3 of the bail-shaped frame.

Secured to the plate 6 and extending above the rib formed by 6 and 9, is a plate 13 having a boss 14 with aninternally threaded opening 15, to receive the shank of a screw carried by the member 7. The member 7 also consists of thin metal, but at a right angle forming a bed plate 16, the edges of plates 7 and 16, are folded over on said plates serving as strengthening stays for plate 7 and are slightly spaced from plate 16, to form guides for tongue 9 of member 6.

Secured to the folded edges of plate 16, are racks 17, having a plurality of notches arranged to receive the ends 5 of the arms 4:. A plate 18, recessed as at 19, is secured to the plate 7, said recess being in the end of said plate, which extends above the rib formed by plates 7 and 16. A screw 19 having a groove 20 in the unthreaded portion of its shank, is arranged to provide the adjustment between the two members. The groove 20 works in the recess 19 of the plate 18 and the threaded shank working in the opening 15 of plate 13.

The operation of the device is as follows z-The device is positioned over the arm of the car seat, and by the rotation of the screw 19, the members of the clamp are drawn together until they are securely clamped. Then the bail-shaped member may be swung over the seat until-the parts 5 of arms 4, rest in either of the notches in' the racks 17. By this arrangement, a resilient back and head rest is afforded, the coils 3, the arms 4c and parts 5, afford a yielding spring construction.
