METHOD OF REFINING WOODEN FAU'CETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led November 9, 1909. Serial No. 527,124.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. KETELSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Refining Wooden Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wooden faucets, and has especial reference to wooden faucets used with beer and wine casks.
This invention has for its object to provide a wooden faucet in which the faucet will be kept in a sanitary condition and will be free from the odor of wood or other foreign substances.
This invention further has for its object.
to provide awooden faucet which will clarify the liquid passing through it and will give a perfectly clear taste thereto, and preserve the flavor of the wine or other beverage contained in the cask.
In order to accomplish the objects of the invention, I have provided a faucet having the walls of its passageways charcoal-burned.
The invention consists in the method of forming such a lining in the passageway or passageways of wooden faucets, and in a faucet having a charcoal-lined passageway.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in longitudinal section of a faucet constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view in longitudinal section of a portion of the faucet and an elect-ive burner applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a gas burner applied thereto.
The invention may be carried out with any suitable form of wooden faucet used with beer or wine casks, and, as herein shown, it is applied to a faucet having a main passageway 2 for the discharge of liquid, and subpassageways 3 with vent holes 4 for the escape of air. The passageways 2 and 3 are shown as provided with a charred or charcoal-burned wall 5.
The burning of the sides of the passageways of the faucet may be done in any suitable manner, either with a heated rod applied to the sides of the passageway from one end to the other until the passageway is thoroughly charred or burned to charcoal, or a small tu e may be employed, applied with gas, or gasolene, and having a properly directed flame which may be applied gradually from one end of the passageway of the faucet to the other until the wall of the entire passageway is thoroughly charred, practically forming a charcoal lining.
Another way in which the charred lining may be eifected would be with a piece of metal heated by electricity and applied to the walls of the passageway, gradually, from one end to the other end thereof.
By means of this invention a perfectly sanitary faucet is provided, which when closed will not become stagnant or give any taste of wood or oil, or any objectionable substance.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, there is shown an electric burner 6 and the manner of using it to char the passageway in the faucet.
In Fig. 4 is shown a tube 7, having a head 8 at its end with radial outlets 9 for providing gas jets, the tube 7 being supplied with gas or gasolene and the ignited gas at the outlets 9 being utilized to char the passageway of the faucet when applied as shown from end to end of said passageway.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. The method of treating the passageway of a wooden faucet, which consists in applying heat gradually from one end to the other of the walls of said passageway, and con verting said walls into a charred or charcoal-burned surface.
2. The process of forming the walls of the passageway of a wooden faucet with a charcoal lining, which consists in applying gradually a heated instrument to the walls from one end to the other until said walls have become thoroughly charred.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a wooden faucet having the walls of its passageway formed with a charred lining filling the interstices of the wood.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a wooden faucet having the walls of its passageway formed with a charcoal lining.
