WEFT-CONTROLLEB FOR AUTOMATIC LOOMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DUNLOP FAULKNER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Clayton, Manchester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Weft-Controllers for Automatic Looms, of which the following is a specification.
These improvements refer to weft controllers for automatic looms and have for their object to provide means whereby, when the weft fails, a fresh shuttle will be inserted, and whereby, when this shuttle sticks or otherwise fails to complete a pick, the loom is stopped, thereby allowing of the continuous working of the loom so long as there is a supply of weft without fear of the shuttleholding magazine becoming rapidly emptied by reason of a fault in the shuttle box or the picker mechanism.
The invent-ion is illustrated upon the accompanying drawing, whereon- Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan of the improved apparatus as it appears when the feeler is about to operate the reshuttling mechanism. Fig. 3 illustrates a further side view of the apparatus but as it appears immediately after a new shuttle has been inserted, and before the loom slay makes its next forward movement. Fig. 4 illustrates another side view of the apparatus as it appears when stopping the loom. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate elevation and plan respectively of sufficient of a loom to illustrate the application thereto of this invention.
According to the invention, instead of using a special feeler for operating the reshuttling mechanism, use is made of the ordinary weft fork for controlling and actuating the reshuttling mechanism, the weft fork, when operated on by the usual hammer lever, transmitting its movement to the reshuttling lever arm a through a pivoted bar or late b, which, at one end, is connected to tie said lever arm, and at the other end is shouldered down and by such shoulder rests upon a stud or pin 0 carried by the weft-fork rod. The cross rod a upon which the lever arm a is mounted is the operative member of any known type of mechanism which, on being rotated, permits of an empty or faulty shuttle being ejected and a newly filled shuttle inserted in the shuttle box. \Vhen the weft fails, the hammer lever moves the bar or plate Z) in the direction of the arrow w and brings about the reshuttling of the loom. At the same time the pin 0 meets and rotates the disk wheel in the direction of the arrow 3/ until the cranked end of the lever 9 (see Fig. 2) falls in front of the notch (F. In being thus rotated the disk wheel lowers the lever arm a which may fall upon the pin 0. Should the weft again fail immediately the new shuttle has been inserted, the pin 0 on the weft fork carrying rod then acts on the lever arm 6 and thereby causes a further rotation of the disk wheel d in the direction of the arrow y until the extension d presses against the usual stopping lever j, see Fig. 4, and stops the loom. Should, however, the weft not again fail as suggested, the pin it on the hammer lever strikes the depending arm of the lever g, releases the disk wheel (Z, and thus allows the parts, under their normal balance or under the influence of the weight (or a spring) to resume their normal position. To release the cloth take-up roller when there is a false pick, the axis of the disk wheel may be fitted with a further lever arm or finger, which, on the disk wheel being rotated to stop the loom, will serve to act upon the cloth take-up roller retaining lever or pawl and hold it clear of the usual 5 time the weft fails.
1. In Weft controllers for automatic looms, and in combination with the weft replenishing mechanism, a bar or plate connected to the reshuttling lever arm, a weft fork carrying rod, a pin or stud on said rod, a disk Wheel with pin thereon for supporting the bar or plate in line with the pin or stud on the weft fork carrying rod or for holding it 115 clear of such pin or stud, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In weft controllers for automatic looms, and in combination with the weft replenishing mechanism, a bar or plate connected to T0 the reshuttling lever arm a weft fork carrying rod with pin or stud thereon, a disk wheel and pm, a lever arm mounted upon said CllSk wheel and worklng 1n c0n unct1on therewith, an extension piece on the disk wheel which presses against the stopping lever to stop the loom, substantially as herein set forth.
8. In weft controllers for automatic looms, and in combination with the weft replenishing mechanism, a bar or plate connected to the reshuttling lever arm, a weft fork carrying rod with a pin or stud thereon, a disk stud and pin, a lever arm mounted upon said disk wheel, an extension piece on the disk wheel, a hammer lever with pin mounted thereon, a lever with depending arm which is operated by the pin on the hammer lever to release the disk wheel, substantially as herein set forth.
