APPLICATION FILED Bumm, 1909.

NUMBER-LOAD PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed September 21, 1909. Serial No. 518,842.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. EASTA- BROOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stevensville, in the county of Bradford, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Lumber-Load Protectors, of which the following is a full clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device applied to a pile or load of lumber; and
Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof takenA through the middle.
The object of this invention is to provide a wear plate for application to the corners of loads of lumber piled on railway cars and other vehicles for transportation, the construction being such that the binding chain or band will be prevented from cutting'the outer upper corners of the boards or beams at the corners of the load as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The device consists of a vertical plate a formed integral with horizontal plate b and at right angles thereto so as to adapt the plate to fit the corner of a pile of lumber. An enlargement c is formed centrally on the outer surfaces of these plates, this enlargement tapering toward the respective ends of the plates, the thickest portion of the enlargement being at the corner or juncture of the two plates. The face of this enlargement is provided with a groove extending from a point about mid-way the upper plate to a point about mid-way the length of the vertical plate and merging into the respective faces of the plates, this groove forming flanges d which extend around the corner of the device. Projecting from the flanges d is a closed eye f, this eye being approximately in vertical alinement with the front plate a. All the parts described are preferably cast in a single piece of malleable iron.
It will be observed that when the device is applied to the corner of a pile of lumber and the binding chain or band is passed through the eye it will rest in the groove and may be readily drawn taut. Lumber will thus be protected from the friction of the chain or band during the jolting the load receives in transportation. The enlargement. or rib c strengthens the device just where it is needed, namely, at the corner, while the ribs or flanges d and the eye serve to hold the chain or band in place and are permitted to be readily slid back and forth without injuring the lumber. To prevent the inner lower corners of the plates a and b from chafng the lumber they are rounded ofi' at g; the advantage in having the eye project vertically upward is that it will be less likely to be broken ofl' than if it projected outwardly from the device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of theclass set forth consisting of a pair of connected plates angularly disposed with reference to each other and provided with a groove extending around the outer corner of the plates, said groove forming flanges extending from the face of one plate around the corner and into the face of the other plate, and an eye projecting upwardly from said flanges.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 16th day of September, 1909.
FRANK EDWARD EASTABROOK.
