Application filed February 23, 1909. Serial No. 479,464.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. CoGGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in t-he county of' Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertically-Adjustable Supports; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in supporting structures for objects, such, for instance, as desks, tables and seats which are adjustable up and down.
The primary object of this invention isj to provide a supporting structure compris-j the adjusting mechanism and is borne by arms depending from and rigid with the aforesaid adjustable object, but to laterally space and brace apart the said arms by a bar which covers and protectsthe shaft between the said arms' without occupying muchl space.
Another object is to hold the said bar to the said arms without necessitating the use the other at the inner side of the other of down relative to the said supports. except that the nut employed in securing the adjustable object in the desired adjustment is shown turned in Fig. 4 to bring the slots or recesses in the periphery'of the nut into registry with the slots or recesses in the periphery of a collar interposed between-the said nut and the adjacent standard or support. In the said drawings, A and A indicate two laterally spaced standards or supports which are rendered stationary in any approved manner and are adapted to be se cured to a floor or base (not shown). Each support A is provided with a slot a which extends up and down the said support.
A horizontally arranged shaft B extends between and through the supports A, projecting or extending at the ends through -the slots a in the said'supports and a suitable distance beyond "the outer sides of the said The shaft B is provided externally with Va groove I; which extends from endv to end of the shaft. The shaft 'B extends loosely through holes e formed in two laterally spaced arms E which depend from and are rigid with the desk or object G which is adjustable up and down on the supports A. The shaft B bears the arms E and consequently the said adjustable object G. The arms E are arranged, one at the inner side of one of the supports A, and
the said supports.
The supports A are provided at the side edges of'the arms E with ribs or guiding members A which extend up and down the said supports and are arranged to guide the said arms during any readjustment of the adjustable object G.
The slotted portion of each support A is offset outwardly, as at A2, to accommodate the location and operation, between the said portion of the said support and the outer side of the adjacent arm F, of a pinion H which is operatively mounted on the shaft B. The operative connection between the 10on y 'groove to the last-mentioned extremity -of l the shaft from the said shoulder also facilitates the assemblage of the parts.

The combination, with two laterally spaced standards or supports provided each with a slot extending up and down the said support; an object which is adjustable up and down relative to the said supports, said adjustable object beingprovided with two laterally spaced and suitably guided depending arms arranged at the inner sides of the said supports; a shaft extending between and through and supporting the said arms and also extending through the slots in the said supports; means whereby the shaft is raised or lowered according as the' shaft is turned in the one or the other direction, and
means whereby the shaft is secured in the desired adjustment, of a bar extending longitudinally of the shaft between the arms, said bar being provided with a slot which receives the shaft and extends longitudinallyI of the bar, and members projecting into the said slot in the bar and rigid with the said llIllS.

The combination, with two laterally spaced standards orv supports provided each with a slot extending up and down the said support; an object which is adjustable up and down relative to the said supports, said adjustable object being provide with two v laterally spaced and suitablyv guided depending arms arranged at the inner sides of the said supports a shaft extending between and through and supporting the said arms and also extending through the slots in the said supports; means whereby the shaft is raised or lowered according as the shaft is turned in the one or the otherdirection, and means whereby the shaft is secured in the desired adjustment, of a bar extending longitudinally of the shaft between the arms,
said barbeing provided with a slot which extends longitudinally of the bar and having such arrangement relative to the shaft that the latter extends through the lastmentioned slot, and flanges formed on the arms and extending circumferentially of the ends of the bar, said flanges being provided internallyY with lugs projecting into the lastmentioned slot. y In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two witnesses.
