GENERATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EssnSMrrH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillyard, county of Spokane, and State of \Vaslr ington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Generators, of which the followin is a specification.
Hy invention relates to a new and useful improvement in generators, and has for its objectto provide an exceedingly simple and effective device for furnishing power from a mixture of any of the gases or gaseous substances that will explode with a fixed amount of atmospheric air, the gases generated being conveyed to a storage tank or receptacle for immediate or future use.
With these ends in view this inventio consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims. V
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1, is an end view of my improved generator, showing the power cylinder in connection therewith, Fig. 2, a central section of the generator cylinder, Fig. 3, a similar view of the power cylinder, Fig. 4, an automatic pump for supplying oil to the generator cylinder, and Fig. 5, a detail view of the main shaft bearing.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the generator cylinder in which is located the piston B adapted to slide back and forth therein after the manner of an ordinary gasolene engine and this piston is connected by the rod C to the eccentric D secured upon the power shaft E or instead of an eccentric a crank may be used.
A represents the power cylinder which may be of ordinary construction having the piston B adapted to slide therein connected by the rod C to the crank D also secured upon the shaft E. By this arrangement when the power shaft E is revolved by the action of the piston B the piston B will be reciprocated within the cylinder A.

mechanism of the power shaft so as to pump oil through the pipe I to the cylinder A and this pump is so timed that when the piston B is moved in the direction of the arrow the oil and air or the proper mixture will be drawn in the cylinder and when the piston is at its extreme outward stroke the mixture will be ignited by the spark plug J and when the explosion takes place the gas will force open the valve K and pass through the pipe L to the storage tank M, as soon as this takes place the valve N will be opened by a proper mechanism thereby exhausting the pressure in the cylinder in order that the piston B will meet no resistance in its backward stroke. As soon as the valve N is opened releasing the pressure in the cylinder the valve K will be closed by its spring K and upon the next forward movement of the piston B fresh mixture will be drawn into the cylinder and the operation repeated.
WVhen the pressure in the storage tank M has reached a pre-determined point the action of the gas therein upon the plunger 0 in the barrel P will lift said plunger and as the latter is connected by the rod Q to the rod R of the plunger H this last named plunger will be held in an elevated position, thus preventing it from pumping further oil in the cylinder and thereby arresting the action of the generator until the pressure in the storage tank has fallen. The plunger 0 is provided with valves 0 so that the pressure of the gas will open these valves until the plunger 0 has reached the top of the barrel P, at which time the valves 0' will contact with the top of this barrel, closing said valves, at which time the plunger will be held at the top of the barrel P. The use of the valves in this manner prevent the plunger being quickly moved to the top of the barrel P which might throw some of the parts out of adjustment. The barrel P is connected with the storage tank M by the pipe S.
Of course any form of motor may be used for revolving the shaft E and while I have here shown a gasolene engine for accomplishing this result an electric motor or steam engine may be utilized for the same purpose.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that gases of any desired pressure may be generated and stored in the tank M which may be used for running engines or various pipes, hammers, hoists, automobiles and any motor which may now be operated by steam or air and in practice we have found that a great amount of power may be produced by this generator more efliciently and with less weight of apparatus and with less friction than machines of present construction.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown as these may be varied within certain limits without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. The herein described combination of a cylinder, a piston adapted to slide therein, a power shaft means for connecting said piston with said power shaft, a pump connected with the cylinder, a storage tank also connected with said cylinder, means dependent upon the pressure of the storage tank for arresting the action of the pump, a spring actuated valve for permitting the flow of the gases of explosion to the storage tank and an exhaust valve adapted to relieve the pressure in the cylinder after the explosion, as specified.
2. In a generator of the character de scribed, a cylinder, a piston fitted to slide therein, a power shaft, means for connecting said piston with the power shaft, a pump for supplying oil to the cylinder, means for regulating the action of said pump, a spring actuated valve for permitting the outflow of the gases of explosion and an exhaust valve adapted to relieve the cylinder of pressure after the explosion, as specified.
8. The herein described combination of a cylinder, a piston adapted to slide therein, a power shaft, means for connecting said piston with said power shaft, a storage tank connected with said cylinder, a pump also connected with said cylinder, said pump having a plunger therein provided with a valve, a rod leading from said plunger, a barrel, a plunger provided with valves slidably mounted in said barrel, a rod leading from said plunger connected to the first named rod, a spring actuated valve for permitting the flow of the gases of explosion to the storage tank, and an exhaust valve adapted to relieve the pressure in the cylinder after the explosion, for the purpose set forth.

In combination with a cylinder having a piston slidable therein, a storage tank connected with said cylinder, a fuel pump also connected with said cylinder, said pump having a check valve located therein and provided with a plunger having a valve, a rod secured to said plunger and extending outside of the pump barrel, a barrel connected to the storage tank, a plunger slidaloly mounted therein provided with valves, and a rod secured to said plunger and having its upper end connected with the first named rod.
