ANTISKIDDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 11, 1910.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Serial No. 560,702.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM REAGAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiskidding Devices; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to anti-skidding de-" vices for vehicle-wheels, but more particularly for that class of wheels which are provided with pneumatic or cushion tires; and it consists of roups of closely-related guard-members an calk-bearin members arranged, at intervals, around t e circumference of the wheel.
One of the chief objects of the invention is to provide against abrading or cutting the tires. I
Another object is to prevent the calks from penetrating the surface of the roadbed to such an extent as will tear up, or disfigure the same in case the surface is composed of asphaltum or concrete.
Other ob ects of the invention will become apparent upon a more complete disclosure thereof.
In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automobile wheel, showing my anti-skidding device applied thereto; Fig.
2, a transverse or cross-section of the tire,
showing a group of the anti-skidding members arranged thereon; Fi 3, an outer face view of a similar group; *ig.,4=, a perspective View of one of the guard-members and one of the calk-bearing sections pivoted to gether; Fig. 5, a vertical section of the interlocking device for securin the respective ends of the retaining-mem ers to ether; Fig. 6, a side elevation of a group 0 modified guard-members,'and calk-bearin members, and Fi 7 a perspective view 0 one of the modifie thereto. In the several views,'the numeral 1 ind cates a number of guard-members, preferably composed of two plates 2, 2, spaced apart and connected together at their back or under sides, as shown in Fig. 5; 'The backs of the guard-members are made slightly rounding, especially their side guard-members, with detach-' able back, showing a separate back applied edges, so as to provide against all danger of abrading or cutting the tire, and to allow for a slight rolling motion on the tire. Pivoted between the guard-plates, attheir adjacent ends, are calk-bearing members 3, composed preferably of a plurality of plates provided with sharpened calks4 for engaging the surface of the road-bed. The points of the calks are substantially in the same horizontal plane as the top edges of the guard-plates forming the guard-members, and being thus protected the calksare prevented from entering the surface of the roadway to an extent suflicient to tear up or injure such surface, the top edges of said guard-plates serving not only to limit the penetrating action of the calks, but to check the tendency to skid.
Pivoted to the end guard-member of each group of anti-skidding devices, is a securingblock 5 having oppositely-disposed hooks 6 which receive the slotted ends of links 7. The hooks of the securing-blocks are so constructed and arranged that, because of their pivotal relation with the said uard-members, disengagement of the links is prevented, but withdrawal of the pintle will allow of the removal of the links from the hooks,-
The respective ends of the retainingmembers are securely fastened together by an inter-locking device pivoted to, one of the end links'of said retaining-member, as shown at 8, Figs. 1 andfi. The interlocking device consists referably of a suitable case 9, in one end of which is pivoted a lockinglever 10, having a hook-shape end 11 in which the slotted end of the other end link of the retaining-member is received, the case being provided with slotted-opening 12, through which the end of the link is passed, when slipped over the locking-lever, into its seat in the hook-shape end. The ivotal point of the locking-lever is sov locate with relation to the seat in the hook-shape end, that when" the lever is pushed or forced into locking position, the strain exerted by the retaining-member will firmly hold said lever against any accidental disengagement of the Instead of employing the gripping devices shown in modified formshown in Figs. 6 and 7, in which the calk-bearing members are ivoted to guard-members not rovided wit back portions, being compose of-guard-plates 13,
Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, I make the said guards, theends of t e calks being in 13, which have their back edges slightly curved, to conform to the lateral curvature of the tire, and their corners rounded, as have also the calk-bearin members 14, so that the tendency to abra e or cut the tire is reduced to a minimum. This form of the device is especially adapted for use on cushion-tired wheels.
It will be noted that, while I have'shown the calk bearing members composed of two plates or sections, they ma be formed from a single plate of require width. It will also be noted that these members are of less width than the guard-members, and in consequence thereof the tendency of the calks, which are thus protected by said guardmembers, to tear up or mar the surface of the roadway, is further diminished, without affecting the gripping qualities of said calkbearing sections, which, in practice, are
shown to be highly efficient in preventing skidding, but if desired a back 15, ha ing bent-up sides 16 may be employed, so as to secure the results obtained by the guardmembers 1, heretofore described.
- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, is
1. An anti-skidding device for flexibly-- tired wheels, including in combination calkbearing members, guard-members for limiting the penetration of the calks, said calkbearing-members being pivoted between said guards, and detachab -connected securingblocks at each end of the pivoted members.
2. An anti-skidding device for flexibl tired wheels, including in combination calkbearing-members, guard-members for limiting the penetration of the calks, said calk bearing-members being pivoted between said guards, and devices for retaining the pivoted members and guards onto the wheel.
3. An anti-skidding device for flexiblytired wheels, including in combination calkbearing-members and guard-members, said calk-bearing-members bein "pivoted between scenic substantially the same plane as the top edges of the guards.
4. An anti-skidding device for flexiblytired wheels, including in combination calkbearing-members, guard-members, said calkbearing-members being pivoted between said guards, the ends of the calks being in substantially the same plane as the top edges of the guards, and retaining-links for holding the pivoted members onto the Wheel.
5. An anti-skidding device for flexiblytired wheels, having in combination calkbearing members and guard members pivoted together, the ends of the calks being in substantially the same plane as the top edges of the guard-members, retainingmembers composed of a plurality of links to which the pivoted members are connected, and interlocking means for fastening the links together. p
6. An anti-skidding device for flexiblliytired wheels, having in combination ca bearin members and guard members pivote together, the ends of the calks being in substantially the same plane as the to edges of the guard-members, said guar members being united by a back, slightly rounded, whereby abrasion and cutting of the tire is prevented.
7. An anti-skidding device for flexiblytired wheels, comprising calk-bearing-memhers and guard-members pivoted together, said ivoted members being-grouped at intervals around the wheel, the ends of the calks being in substantially the same plane as the top edges of the guard-members, securing-blocks pivoted to each end of each group, retaining-links for holding the pivoted members onto the wheel, and means for locking the end links together.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses,
WILLIAM REAGAN.
