To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY E. VAN LUVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cartons or cases primarily intended for shipping eggs, fruit, etc. the object being to provide a cheap and practical means for storing and transporting eggs or fruit, and the invention has also for its object to provide means for thoroughly ventilating the cells in which the eggs or fruit are placed, and also to pro-.

vide means for preventing the crushiiegof the cells and the consequent breaking or mashing of the contents of the cells.

\Vith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carton in its set up position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the carton blank before the same is folded to form the box or case. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the blank comprising the outer casin of the carton. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional new of the carton. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the outer connectin strip. Fig. 7 is a similar view of one of t e cross sectional connecting strips. Fi 8 is a similar view of one of the longitu lnal connecting strips.

The section of the device shown in Fig. 3 forms the main body of the carton and is preferably composed of a cardboard blank, which may be coated with wax or similar material to protect the contents of the carton as well as the carton itself. The central portion 1 of the blank comprises the bottom of the carton while the portions 2 constitute the longitudinal sides of the carton, and these sides have a plurality of ventilatin openings designated by the numeral3. T e sides 2 are divided from the bottom 1 by fold lines 4. The blank is also provided with transverse fold lines 5 dividing the end flaps 6 from the body 1. The end flap has a fold line 7 to form a tongue 8, and the said tongue as well as the flap 6 has an elongated slot 9, the purpose of which will presently be apparent. The tongue 8 is provided upon one of its edges with a lip 10. The edge of one of the sides 2 has a centrally arranged projecting apron l2 and the bodies of said sides have their edges provided with alining slits 11, the apron being positioned between two of the said slits and having a transverse slit 13 which also enters the side 2. The central portion'l has a plurality of enlarged air inlets 14. \Vhen the section is to be set up it is merely necessary to fold the member 6 upon its score 5 and the members 2 upon their scores 4. The tongues 8 and the apron 12 are bent downwardly upon their scores and the tongues 17 of the partitions (3 inserted in the slits 11. The transverse partitions have central slits 18 which are adapted to engage the upper faces of the longitudinal connecting member 19. The mem ber 19 has in its lower edge a plurality of vertical slits 21 which are adapted to straddle the lower faces of the members 16, thus locking the members 16 and 19. The outer ends of the member 19 carry depending cars 22 adapted to engage with the cut away portion of the members 6 and 8 of'the body 1 so as to sustain the device set up to provide a plurality of cells adapted for the reception of eggs or fruit. The longitudinal partition 19 is provided with aplurality of air openings 23. The enveloping member Fig. 4 comprises a bot-tom flap 24, a rear flap 25 and a top flap 26. The rear flap 25 is divided from both the top and-bottom flaps by scores 27 and also has a plurality of openings 28 which aline with the openings upon the rear flap of the member 1. The member 25 has score lines 29 whereby the member is divided from the members 30. The body 25 is provided with oppositely arranged L-shaped slots 31 adapted to be engaged by the tongue members 32 provided upon the reinforcing strip 33. This strip 33 has vertical scores 34 so that the said strip may be bent to allow the tongues 32 to be inserted within the openings 31 of the member 25 at the rear of said member and which also provide for the formation of the side section 35 as well as the front section 36. The side sections have a slit 37 adjacent their upper edge which is adapted to be engaged by the tongue 22 provided upon the section 19. The member 36 has longitudinal slits 8b coinciding with the slits 11 and these slits are arranged adjacent the upper edge of the member 23 to provide for the reception of the offset tongue 17 of the member 16. The portion 36 has openings 39 to permit a circulation of air in each of the separate compartments formed by the carton. In Fig. 5 it is shown that the different elements forming the carton are so positioned as to sustain the body member 1 above the base 24 and provide an air space between them.

By reference to Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawings it will be seen that the tongue 32 of the member 33 is formed with two portions 40 and 41, said portions being arranged at suitable angles with each other so as to engage the sides of the L-shaped slot 31. The numeral 42 designates a cord which serves three separate and distinct purposes, first as a means for retaining the carton in a closed osition second as a handle for carr in the carton, and third as a support for retaining the members of the carton in proper relation with each other.

By reference to Fig. 5 it will be seen that the cord 42 is first passed through the upper openings in the rear members of the carton and is thence brought downwardly upon the inner face of the back member of the body,

through its lower openings and through one of the lower openings 28 of the member 25, the ends of the cord being brought over and below the top and bottom of the device and tied at the front. It will be still further seen that when the cross partitions 16 are in place, the rear flap or tongue 17 is bent at an angle so as to clear the back 25, while the forward tongue upon the o posite side of the member 16 projects Beyond the face of the member-=33, for a distance substantially equaling projection of the menu her 24.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A carton comprising a main section constructed of-a single piece of card board or the like, said main section comprising a bottom portion provided with spaced openings and being also provided with side and end members, the side and end members being separated from the body, the end members having extending portions divided therefrom by weakened lines, and the said end members and extensions being also provided with longitudinally extending slits, one of the side members having an apron divided therefrom through the medium of a weakened line, the said apron and side member having a transverse slit, the edges of the side members being also provided with a plurality of spaced slits, transverse members having their edges provided with lips engaging the slits of the side members of the body, a longitudinal partition having its edge provided with lips engaging the slits within the end members and their extensions and also interlocked with the transverse members, an enveloping member comprising a bottom portion, a back portion and a top portion adapted to be positioned upon the body member and to have its bot tom projected below the bottom of the body portion, and a reinforcing member adapted to engage the front and sides of the carton and to be connected with the rear face of the enveloping member.
