To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAIRD J. J AoxsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at I Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad- Iron Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention consists of a device for heating sad irons, and has for its object to provide means for supporting the irons within a heat-retaining shell over a burner, so arranged that the holder may be intermittently rotated to bring each heated iron in register with an opening having a closing door in the shell or casing, and having means for preventing reverse movement of the holder, thus presenting aheated iron each time the holder is rotated and insuring against removal of a cold iron.

The invention consists of the construction shown in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the device in elevation, set on a burner. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line II. II. of Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a detail view in side elevation of the rotatable iron holder. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line IV. IV. of Fig. 2. Fig 5 is an enlarged plan view of the central portion of the supporting base.

The device consists of a flat base 2 adapted to be set on a burner 3 or on the top of any suitable heating device, having an open body portion and an upwardly extending coniform shell or casing 1 provided with an opening and closing door 5 hinged at 6.

The base 2 is conveniently made of three radially disposed arms leaving the main intervening space open between the arms for circulation of the gases, one of said arms being widened out as at 2 immediately be ipw the door 5 to protect the hand from the eat.

Base 2 is provided at its central portion with an upwardly extending bearing 7 hav ing ratchet-shaped locking teeth or abutments 8 and a central hole, and said bearing supports the lower end of the rotatable iron holder by its pivotal stem 9 in said hole. The holder consists of a base 10 provided at its central under portion with a series of locking abntments or ratchet teeth 11 adapted to engage teeth 8 and rotatable thereon in one direction only, and also hav ing a series of upwardly extending inwardly sloping sad iron brackets 12. These brackets are shaped to receive the bottom face of the sad iron and have supporting lugs 13 whereby the iron is supported with its bottom facing the hollow interior of the rotatable holder.

The brackets 12 are connected together at the top by an integral cap piece 12 having a stem 14 which extends through and forms a journal bearing in the top 15 of easing 4, the stem having a turning handle 16.

In operation, the entire device is set on top of the burner, the heat of which passes upwardly within and is confined by the casing 4:.

The teeth 81l are so arranged that as the sad iron supporting holder is rotated intermittently by its handle, the receiving portion for an iron is located in front of and in register with the opening of door 5. The frame may thus be loaded with irons, and when sufficiently heated, a hot iron is taken off, a cold one put on, and the frame rotated one movement. This brings the next hot iron into register with the door opening, rotating the replaced cold iron beyond it, so that it is thus impossible to take off a cold iron by mistake. The device may be used continuously, always presenting a hot iron for removal, and will be found to thus insure uniformly heated irons, while greatly economizing the heat.

It will be understood that the rotatable holder may be made to carry any number of irons, the number of locking teeth corresponding, and may be otherwise changed or varied in design or construction by the skilled mechanic within the scope of the following claims.

What I claim is I 1. In a heater for sad irons, the combination of a fiat stationary apertured base having a central bearing for the iron holder, a coni-form casing extending upwardly from the base provided with a lateral opening and a door therefor and a covering top having a central stem bearing opening, a rotatable iron supporting frame consisting of an upper integral portion having apertured iron supporting faces and lugs and a central stem engaging said bearing opening in the case, a separately attached rotatable base therefor having a central under hearing, an operating handle secured to said central stem, and co-actingratchet teeth on the stationary and rotatable base respectively for arresting said rotatable base and its frame against reverse rotation and for holding it to present one of its faces opposite to the door opening in the case, sub stantially as set forth.

2. In a heater for sad irons, the combination of a stationary base consisting of a central bearing portion having radial arms and intervening heat circulation spaces, one of said arms being widened to provide a hand shield, a coni-form casing extending upwardly from the base having a lateral opening above said hand shield, a door, and a covering top provided with a central stem bearing opening, a rotatable iron-supporting frame having a corresponding central pivoting bearing and upwardly and inwardly sloping centrally open faces having outwardly extending pairs of supporting lugs for the irons and an upper central stem extending through the top of the easing and provided with a turning handle, and co-acting ratchet devices on the stationary base and the base of the iron-supporting frame respectively for holding the frame against reverse movement, substantially as set forth.
