To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hnnsonnn Donsny Srnxor-zn. a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State ,of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Presses, of which the followingdescription, in connection with th accompanying drawings, is a specie lication, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to presses in which the presser members are relatively movable into dill'erent operative relations to each other, and particularly to presses of the type employed to ut out thin sheet material such as upper leather for boots or shoes.
Presses of the type just referred to are adantageously constructed with presser menihers having different pressure surface areas, and in a preferred construction a movable presser member having a pressure surface area considerably less than that of the opposed stock supporting bed is movable over said bed to bring it into operative relation to a die placed upon different portions of the stock to be cut which is supported upon the bed, this movement being preferably provided for by arranging the member so that it swings about a vertical axis at one side oi the bed.
The movement. of the presser member into operative relation to the (lie may be effected in any suitable manner, as, for example, by hand, but in order that the machine may have as great capacity as possible, it is desirable that the pressing operation take place immediately after the prcsser member comes into operative position.- Provision has been made in known machines for this succession of operations. It has been found, howeven in practice that. if the pressing operation takes place before the movement by which the presser member has been brought into operative position has entirely ceased, the die will be struck a glancing blow and it is, therefore, desirable to prevent such operation of'the machine and. to
insure that when the presser member strikes the die-it shall be moving in a direction substantially normal to the surface of the bed.

Another important feature is the provision of means controlled by the starting means for checking the relative movement 7 by which the presser members have been brought into a selected operative relation to each other before the relative pressing movement begins.
As hereinabove suggested, the means for checking the relative movement by which the presser members are brought into a selected operative relation to each other is preferably normally operative, and it is therefore essential that provision be made for rendering the means inoperative when it is desired to effect a relativemovement of the members into or out of a selected operative relation.
In the illustrated preferred embodiment of the invention, the movement of the presser member over the bed is effected by hand, and the starting means is provided with a handle which may be grasped by theoperator ,.to effect such movement, the starting means being so constructed that depression of the same handle will serve to actuate the clutch. This arrangement of the starting means and the handleby which it is manipulated is that employed in the commercial machine and, in the illustrated embodiment, in order that the invention may be carried out and yet have the steps in the operation of the machine substantially like those in the operation of the commercial machine, provision has been made for a lateral movement of this handle by which the means her'einabove referred to, which may conveniently be inoperative as the handle is grasped by the operator and moved in the direction in which it is desired that the presse'r member shall move. v
It will, therefore, be seen that another important feature of the invention is the rovision in a machine of the class describe of normally operative braking means which serves to prevent relativemovement of the press er members other than their relat ve ressing movement and means for renderingsaid braking means inoperative which is actuated, preferably automatically, as the operator graspsthe handle by which the relative movement into or out of a selected operative relation is efiected.
In another aspect, the invention may be said to comprise the provision in a machine in which the presser member is manually movable into and out of different operative relations to a stock supporting bed of means, preferably acting automatically, for preventing further movement of said member at either or each of the limits of its manual movement. Other features and objects of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and claims taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine of the type known to the trade as the Clicking machine, having embodied therein the invention of this application, Fig. 2 is a detail plan, partly n sect1on, showing the construction of the braking means and the means for rendering said braking means inoperative; and Fig. 3 is a detail section illustrating further the construction or the braking means. c
The machine herein illustrated comprises a stock supporting bed 2 mounted upon a bracket 4 bolted to the main part of the frame 6 in Whichare formed bearings 8 and 10 for a vertical post or plunger 12 carrying a presser-member 14 which is arranged to swing with the post 12 whereby it may be brought into operative position over a movable die 16 placed upon a selected portion of the material 18 which is to be cut, after which a loose pulley 20 is clutched to a driving shaft 22 by suitable clutch mechanism not herein specifically illustrated and described whereby through suitable eccentric connections with the post or plunger 12 the pressing operation is effected.
The parts thus far described may be substantially those in commercial use and do not specifically form features of the present invention.
-The braking means of this invention is preferably arranged to operate upon or through the post or plunger 12. The illustrated braking means is of the expanding ring type, a s lit ring 24 being connected to the post or p unger 12 and expanding into engagement with the inner surface of the other brake member 26 which hasja rearwardly extending portion 28 guided and confined in a vertical slot 27 in anupstanding part 2.9 of theframe .6. The expand ng ring 24 is supported inoperative relation to the brake member 26 by a support comprising a, sleeve 30 which is keyed to the post'12 by: a ,key 32 entering a vertical groove 34 in the post, whereby is caused to turn with the post. The sleeve is. also attached to the post to move vertically therewith. The sleeve 30 is provided the sleeve lit at its lower end with a flange 36 upon which the expanding ring 24 rests. The ring is caused to turn with the sleeve and post by a loose connection therewith comprising a lug 38 upon a member 40 rigidly attached to the sleeve or to its flange. The lug 38 enters a notch12 in the expanding ring 2+1. A collar 13 screwed upon the upper end of the sleev 30 above the brake member 26 confines 'the said member so that it moves vertically with the post 12 although it is prevented from turning therewith by the engagement of the extension 28 with the sides of the slot 27.
The ring 24 is maintained normally in its expanded condition by a screw threaded thrust pin 14 which is threaded into the ring upon one side of the split therein and has a;
bearing against the ring upon the other side of the split. Attached to the thrust pin is an operating arm 46 against which bears one end of a spring 48 which is socketed at its other end in the flange 36, this flange being.
also slotted in this region to receive the arm 46. livotally connected to the lower end of the arm 16 is a plunger 50 which is guided in an opening in a lug 52 depending from the flange 36. The spring 48 presses the arm 46 normally in the direction to cause the ring to be expanded into engagement with the brake member 26 whereby the brake is normally operative. The plunger 50 is moved in the direction to release the braking means by mechanism now to be described. In this machine, as in the commercial Clicking machine, the starting clutch is actuated through a lever 54 which is pivoted at 56 in the frame 6 and is connected by a rod 58 with a clutch tripping lever 60. The forward arm of the lever in this machine, in the connnercial Clicking machine, is provided with a swivel surrounding and concentric with the post 12 so that one part of the arm may swing with the prcsser member 14. In this machine the construction of the part (32 of the forward arm of the lever 5-1, which part travels with the presser member 14, has been modified and upon this part 62 has been mounted mechanism through which the plunger 50 is operated. The presser member 14 is caused to swing with the part 62, when the handle 64 is grasped, by the engagement of one side of an openingin the part (52 with a pin 66 upon the presser memher, the part 62 being free to move vertically over said pin. The handle 64 is carried upon a member G8 which is provided with two,slots 70 and T2 concentric with the opening in the member through which the pin 66 passes. The slots 70 and 72 receive pins 74 and 76, respectively, upstanding from the flat expanded portion of the part 62. Pivotally connected to the rear end of the member -68 is a link 7 8 connected at its other end at 80 to the lower arm of the plunger actuating lever 82 fulcrumed at 84 in one member 86 of the swivel surrounding the post 12. The member (38 and handle (51 are maintained normally in their middle position by a spring 88 connected at one end to the rear middle part of the member 68 and at its other end to the lug 90 upon the part 62. Vertical adjustment of tlie post 12- in the usual manner by the hand wheel 92 is provided for by extending the plunger engaging portion of the lever 82.
The operation of this machine may be briefly described as follows :-Let it be assumed that the presser member 1a is at one side of the portion of the stock upon which the operator desires to place the die 16 and that the die 16 has been placed upon the selected portion of the .stock. At this time the presser member is held in the position in which it has been left by the action of the braking means hereinabove described, the ring 24; being normally expanded into engagement with the brake member 26, and the handle 6-1 is in mid position upon the presser member and upon the part (32 of the clutch actuating lever. The operator now grasps the handle (i l to swing the presser member ll into operative position over the die. As the presser member is held against lateral movement by the braking means the member 68 will be turned by the handle 64 about a center coinciding with the center of the opening which receives thepin 66 in one direction or the other. The direction in which the member 68 turns will. depend obviously upon the position of the presser member when the operator grasps the handle. lit the presser member is to the right of the portion of the stock upon which the operator has placed the die, the member 8 will be turned in a clockwise direction in Fig. 2, and vice versa it the presser member be to the left of. the said portion of the stock. Turning of the member (38 in either direction will cause the link 78 to pull forward the lower arm of the lever 82, thereby causing the upper arm to be moved rearuuirdly into engagement with the plunger 50. the plunger 50 moved to the left in Fig. ll by the rearward movement of the. upper arm of the lever 82, it will turn the thrust pin 4H in the direction to permit the ring 2% to contract out of engagement with the brake member 26. The presser member 14 is therefore now free to move with the part 2 of the clutch actuating lever 54 and will continue. tree to move therewith until it comes into ol'ierative position over-tho die when the operator will ordinarily check the movement of the handle (34, thereby again bringing it to mid position and permitting the spring 48 operating through the arm 46 again to expand the ring 24 into engagement with the brake member 26 and stop the presser member in this position. The operator new depresses the handle 64:, thus depressing the forward arm of the levero land actuating the clutch.
It will be noted that the application of the brake to the post 12 takes place before the actuation of the clutch and that the brake is automatically released as the operator starts to swing the presser member in either direction through the handle 64. It will be noted further that the braking means serves to prevent further movement of the presser member both as it comes into operative position over the die and again when the operator has moved it the desired distance out of operative position over the die. It will, therefore, be seen that an important advantage of the present construction is that the presser member Will not be swung out of reach of the operator as he moves it from operative into inoperative position, no matter how rapidly it may be moving at the time when he lets go of the handle.
In the foregoing description of the operation of the machine reference has been made to checking the movement of the handle 64 as the presser member 14 comes into operative position over the die. This Will be the usual procedure since the operator will keep hold of the handle in order to depress it to actuate the clutch. It will be "understood, however, that such checking of the movement of the handle 64; is not necessary to cause the braking means to act to prevent the further movement of the presser memher but that the operator may release the handle, if he desires, when the spring 88 will restore it to its mid position, thereby again permitting the braking means to act upon the post or plunger 12.
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by-Let-ters Patent of the United States is l. A machine of the class described, hav ing, in combination, presser members relatively movable into different operative relations'to each other and relatively movable toward and away from each other to efi ect a pressing operation, and means for preventmg the continuation of the first mentioned relative movement of the presser members during the relative movement by which the pressing operation is'eiiected constructed to check the first mentioned relative movement before the relative pressing movement begins.

A machine of the class described, having in combination, abed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into and out of difi ercnt operative relations thereto, a handle to be grasped by the operator in effecting such manual movement, and means operated upon the release of said handle for preventing movement of said member beyond the limits of the manual movement.

A. machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into and out of difierent operative relations thereto, and means for preventing movement of said presser member out of operative position beyond the limit of its manual movement for this purpose;

10. A machine of the class described, having, in combination,- a bed, a die movable over said bed, a presser membermanually movable over the bed into and out of operative position above the die wherever located.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a die freely movable over said bed, a presser member manually movable into and out of operative position above the die wherever located on said bed and movable toward and away from the die to effect the pressing operation, and means operating before the beginning of the movement of the presser member toward the die for preventing its movement beyond the limit of its manual movement into operative position.
13. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, presser members relatively movable into difierent operative relations to each other and relatively movable toward and awayfromrach other to effect a pressing operation, starting means for controlling the relative pressing movement of the presser members, and means controlled by the starting means for preventing the continuation of the relative movement by which the presser members are brought into a selected operative relation during the relative pressing movement.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, presser members relatively movable into different operative rela-- tions to each other and relatively movable toward and away from eachother to effect a pressing operation, starting'mea-ns for controllingthe relative pressing movement, and means controlled by the starting means for checking the relative movement by which the presser members have been brought into a selected operative relation to each other before the relative pressing movement begins.
15. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, presser members relatively movable into different operative relations to each other and relatively movable in a direction transverse to the first movement to effect a pressing operation, braking means actin normally to prevent the first mentione relative movement of said presser members, a handle arranged to be grasped byithe operator for ellecting such movement, and means for rendering said braking means inoperative automatically actuate-d as the operator grasps the handle.
16. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, apresser member manually nu -able over said bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, a handle arranged to be grasped by the operator in moving the presser member over the bed, said handle being movable with said presser member and also movable relatively thereto, and means controlled by the relative movement of the handle to the presser member for preventing the further movement of said member at the limit of its manual movement.
17. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member manna-ll movable over said bed into and out of iflerent operative relations thereto, H
a handle to be grasped by the operator in efi'ecting the manual movement of the presser member and arranged for movement with said member and also for movement relative thereto in two directions, means ,controlled by the relative movement of the handle in one direction for effecting the pressing movement of the presser member, and means controlled bythe relative movement of the handle in the other direction for preventing the further movement of said member at the limit of its manual movement. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, braking means operating to hold the presser member normally against movement over the bed, a handle to be grasped by the operator in effecting the manual movement of the presser member, said handle being movable relatively to the presser member in the direction of the movement of said member over the bed and being yieldingly maintained in its mid position on said member, and means operated by the relative movement of the handle to the presser member caused by the initial resistance of the presser member to 'the manual movement for rendering the braknw means lnoperative.
19. 1 machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, apresser member manually movable over the bed into and out of different .operativerelations thereto, a
handle to be grasped by the operator in moving the presser member over the bed, said handle being. movable with the presser membe' and also movable relatively thereto in directions corresponding to the directions of movement of the-presser member over the bed, means controlled by the relative movement of the handle to the presser member for preventing the further movement of said member at the limit of its manual movement, and means for yieldingly maintaining said handle in its mid position.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a. bed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, normally operative braking means for holding the presser member against movement over the bed, a handle arranged to be grasped by the operator in effecting the manual movement of the presser member, said handle be ing movable with said presser member over the bed and movablerelatively thereto to render said braking means inoperative, and means for yieldingly maintaining said handle in that position in which it permits the braking means to remain operative.
21. A machine otthe class described, having in combination, a bed, a presser member manually movable over said bed into and out of difierent operative relations thereto, and means comprising an expanding ring yieldingly maintained normally in its expanded condition for preventing the further movement of said member at each of the limits of its manual movement.
22. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, means comprising an expanding ring yieldingly maintained normally in its expanded condition for holding the presser member against movement over the bed, and means under the control of the operator for rendering the holding means inoperative when such movement of the presser member is desired.
A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over said bod into and out of different operative relations thereto, a post to which said presser member is attached mounted in bearings at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, and means for checking the movement of the presscr member over the bed comprising an expanding ring, a brake member surrounding said ring and into engagement with which said ring is arranged to expand, one of said parts being carried by the post and the other by the machine frame, and means for expanding said ring.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presser member movable over said. bed into and out of (litter-out operative relations thereto a post to whiclrsaid presser member is attached mounted in bearings at one side of said bed for vertical reciprocation and for oscillation about its vertical axis, and means for chccle ing the movement of the presser member over the bed comprising an expanding ring, a bralre member surrounding said ring and into engagement with which said ring is arranged to expand, one of said parts being carried by the post and the other by the machine frame, ielding means operating to expand said ring into engagement with. said brake member, and means under control of the operator forceliecting the disengagement of the ring and the brake member.
25. A machine of the class described, hav- ,ing, in combination, a bed, a presser memmeans moving with the presser member for controlling the operation of the braking means at any angular position of the presser member.

A machine of the class described, hav ing, in combination, a bed, a presser member angularly movable over the bed into and out of different operative relations thereto, normally operative braking means for checking the movement of the presser memberover the bed, and means movable with the presser member for rendering the braking means inoperative at any angular position of the presser member.
27. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a presscr member laterally movable over said bed into difi'e'r ent operative relations thereto and movable toward and'away from said bed to effect a pressing operation, braking means normally operative to maintain said presser member against lateral movement, and means for rendering said braking means inoperative when it is desired to move the presser member over the bed.
A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, presser member manually movable over said bed into different operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from said bed to effect a pressing operation, braking means normally operative to maintain said presser member in whatever position over the bed it may be and means automatically operated as the operator starts to move the presser member for rendering said braking means inoporative.

A machine of the class described,having, in combination, a bed, a presser member laterally movable over said bed into di.ii'erent operative relations thereto and movable toward and away from said bed to efiect a pressing operation, braking means normally operative to maintain said presser member in whatever position it may be stopped in its path of lateral movement, and means automatically actuated as a laterally moving force is applied to the presser member for rendering said braking means inoperative.
30. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bed, a die freely movable over the bed, a prcsser member having a-pressure surface area less than that of the bed. movable over the bed into operative position above the die whereverlocated on the bed and movable into and out of enga ement with the die, braking means norma 1y operative to maintain said presser member in whatever position it may be stopped in its path of movement over the ed, and means automatically actuated as a laterally moving fore is applied to the Presser member for rendering said braking means inoperative.
