To all whom it may concern: l Be it known that I, WAL'rin:v A. FRED- ERIGK, ya' citizen of the United IStates, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and Statei'of Michigan, have invented cer# tain new and useful Improvements in Breathers for Explosive-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make 'and use the same. l
My invention has for its object to an-improved breather and Atillingpipe for explosive engines, and to this end the invention consists of the lnovel devices and construction and arrangement of parts here inafter described and deiined in the claims. Primarily, this device is intended to act as a vent tothe crank case of an explosive engine, to thereby relieve the compression and allow the heat to escape and prevent the `crank case from becoming overheated.
IIitherto devices of this general character.
have been provided, but all thereof so far as I am aware, have been provided with screens to prevent the escape of oil, and these screens are liable to become stopped up and, furthermore, even when clean give a quite high resistance to the passa e of gases and air and hence produce undesirable back pressure.
My invention provides a 'breather and illing tube, which requires no screen, but in lieu thereof, is provided with alternated or interlapping battle plates or deflectors, which may be of various shape and arrangement, but are so disposed that they allow for the free passage of air and ases therethrough, but lprevent oil from eing splashed or thrown out of the crank case. The breathing tube may, also, be used as a place to in troduce oil into the' crank case.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a View chietiy in vertical section, showing the improved breather and lling tube, some parts .thereof being shown in full; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line m2 m2 of Fig. 1.
provide The tubular body of the breather is indicated by the numeral l and the upper end tlereof is preferably made bell-shaped or fiaring at 2, while the lower end thereof, as shown, is slightly contracted and externally threaded at?) to adapt it to be screwed into the engine crank case. Within the tube l is a multiplicity of alternated and interlapped battle plates or deflecting flanges 4 preferably, `although not necessarily, integral with the said tube. These baflie plates or deflectors are downwardly inclined toward their edges, so that any oil which may lodge thereon will bedirected .down- Ward into the crank case. The uppermost baie plate lor ange 4 is provided with an p upright sleeve 5 located at the axis of the tube The numeral 6 indicates a deflecting cap shown as secured to the upper end of a stem 7, the lower end of which is split and is frictionally engaged with the sleeve 5. When the cap 6 is thus positioned, its edge stands clear of the upper edge of the tube so as to leave a continuousv annular discharge pas sage 8.
The efficiency of. the device above described has been demonstrated in practice.
What I lclailnis:
1. A. breathing tube for an engine crank case, provided with interior alternated and interlapped baffle plates, forming a free but zigzag air passage through the said tube and a cap supported with its edge spaced from the'upper edge of said tube, substantially as described.
2. A breathing tube for an engine crank i case, provided with alternated and inter- -lapped inclined bale plates, the upper baille plate having a sleeve at the axisr of said tube and a cap provided with a stem engaging said sleeve, the edge of said cap being spaced from the upper edge of said tube, substantially as described. i l
