To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DAvrs,`a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and` tate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Minin -Machines, of which the following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to mining machines, and has for its object to provide a new and improved cutter head for machines of this description.
The-invention is illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view showing a cutter head embodying the invention; Fig-2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line -3-3 of Fig. l.

This` invention is particularly adapted for mining -machines having a chain cutter which moves along-the face of the coal, and which is su ported by the cutter head. This cutter hea as shown in the drawings, is formed of two plates, a top plate 1 `and a bottom plate 2, relnovably connected together. These plates are provided with projecting parts 3 and 4, which form bctween them the cutter chain receiving space for the cutter chain. Connected with the projecting parts 3 and 4 are the lips or chain guiding pieces (i, which are preferably` made of tool steel riveted and welded to the top and bottom plates. These lips are subject to great wear, and hence should be hard and should be rigidly fastened in place. At the back of the chain receivin space there are provided removable wearing plates 7. Between the lips 6 and the plates 7 are grooves or guidewa s forl receiving projecting'portions or gui es formedon the cutter chain so that said cutter chain will be securely held in place as long as the top and bottom plates are firmly held together. Some suitable means is provided for holding the top and bottom plates 1 and 2 firmly together.
In view of tho fact that the device is used under conditions where dust vand dirt are liable to get between the plates, it is desirable to have some means whereby the plates cannot be fastened together until their opposed yfaces are thoroughly cleaned of all foreign material so that when placed to therewith a locking piece 12. piece 9 is forced in between the locking gether they will be in proper position and m actual contact, and so that the will be held solidly together. This result 1s secured by means of one or more holdin pieces 9, which, as herein shown, consist o wide, flat metal pieces. The top plate is provided with a projecting part '10 provided with a lookin piece 11, and the bottom plate has connecte The holding pieces 11 and 12, one end engaging the locking piece 11, and the other end resting upon a support to which it is fastened by the cap screw 13. These pieces are preferably arranged so thatv there will be just space enough betweenthem to receive the holding piece when all foreign materialv is removed from between the engaging faces of the top and bottom plates, and hence it will'be seen that the two plates cannot be assembled until these faces are clean.' The holding pieces are then forced into position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and securely lock the top and bottom plates together. These holding pieces are held in any desired manner against accidental removal, as by means ofthe cap screws or bolts 13. It will thus be seen that the solid clamping of the top and bottom plates in nomanner de ends. upon the tightness with which the holts 13 are screwed down. At each corner of the cutter head there is provided a sprocket wheel 14. Bolts 15 pass through these sprocket wheels. Said bolts are preferably provided with a fine thread and with heads so that they can be engaged' by a wrench. They help hold the top and bottom plates togethenand by making the thread fine, the proper holding of these plates together at the corners is secured.
By means of this construction the; oint, at whichl the two plates are held together, vthat is, the point where the separating strain between vthe lates due to the action of the cutter chain 1s resisted, is brought close u to the chain, and this point is brou ht muc closer to the chain than is ossiole y means of bolts or other similar Vastening devices. The importance of this construction will be seen when it is noted that during the operation of the mining machine there is exerted a pressure by the cutters which tends to force the top and bottom plates a art, and that the lever arm by means of w ich this force' is exerted is made comparatively short, and the effect of the force therefore 'greatly reduced.
It willbe noted that in this `construction the holding orl fastening piece is substantially parallel to the top and bottom plates, and that it engages faces substantially parallel to these plates. It will further be noted that the holding device has two engaging faces, one 'of which engages an engaging face associated with, the upper plate land the other an engaging face associated with the lower plate, and that all of these engaging faces -are substantially parallel and are also substantially parallel to the portions of the top and bottom plates between which the chain is received. i
