To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnnr COLMAN SMITH, residing at Tye River, in the county of Nelson and State of Virginia, have invented new end useful Improvements in thin-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ties for railway rails, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, which comprises few parts, which eiliciently dispenses with the use ofspikes or analogous securing elements and which provides means whereby the rail may be caslly and quickly detached from the tie when desired.

The improved tie designated by the nu" merel 1, may be constructed of any desired material, such as Wflfid, metal or the like, and the said tie comprises a, substantially rectangular member which is provided with depressed portions or seats 2 adjacent both 'of its ends. These seats 2 each comprise a horizontally straight floor portion 3, which has one of its ends beveled to provide an overlying portion or flange 4, or a shape similar to the flanges and the webs of the rail members 5. i The said pockets 2 are also provided adjace'nt their opposite faces with beveled depressed portions 6, the some being adapted for the reception of Webs or offsets 7 provided upon locking blocks 8. Each of these locking blocks 8 comprises a, vertically straight face portion 9, which is adapted to shut against the web of the rail adjacent to that contacted by the vertical member of the pocket 2. Each of the locking blocks 8 is also provided with an undercut portion which is adapted to overlie the base flange of the rail 5 adjacent to that engaged by the overlying portion l of the tie l, and the said block is further provided with an in= clined wall 10 which enga es with the inclined face of theseat l adyacent to that of the recess 6. The tie l is also provided with securing elements designated by the numoral 10'. These elements are each, preferably constructed of a. single strip of suitable metal being formed in the shape of a U, one arm of which being adopted to serve as a handle, while the oppositenrm is adopted to be swun into contact with the portion 7 of the locking block 8. By'reference to the blocks illustrated in Fig. 2 of the'drowings, it will benoted that they are inclined longitudinzilly so that the same when brought into an engaging position with the rails, eiiectively contoctthe same by a wedge action and the liability or accidental removal is substantially obviated.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a simple and efl'e'ctivedevice for the purpose in-- tended, and it is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodimcnt of the improvement,-as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new is A. railway tie rovided with a rail receiving pocket, said pocket being provided with a recess adjacent one of the faces of the tie, a locking block for the tie provided with an integrally formed extending finger adapted to engage the recess of the tie, and a U- shaped locking member adapted to contact the said. finger to retain the locking member within the pocket.
