Description

PATENTED APR. 11, 1905.
E. HIJOHNSTON.
RAILROAD RAIL GUARD CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED 0013 1904.
Patented April 11, 1905.
PATENT QFFTCE.
EDWARD H. JOHNSTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAlLROAD-RAlL-GUARD CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,186, dated April 11, 1905.
Application tiled October 3,1904. Serial No. 226.893.
Be it known that I, Fanvuw H. JOIIXSWJN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful liailroadRaildluard Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to guards for railroadrails: and it consists of a novel clamp for the same, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure I represents an end elevation of a clamp for a guard-rail embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan viewof the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the ligures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a railroznlaail, and B designates a guard-rail therefor.
L designates a filling-piece which is interposed between the opposite sides of said rails A and B and rested upon the flanges thereof, they serving to retain said rails the proper distance apart.
I) designates a clamp which consists of the base I l, the sides F on the outer ends thereof, and the lips (i, which are inturned from the upper ends of said sides F, the inner walls of the latter being tapering, as shown dotted in Fig.
H designates cheek-pieces which are interposed between the sides F of the clamp and the sides of the rails A B and rest on the outer flanges of said rails and the adjacent portions of base IQ, they being also embraced on top by the lips (I, so as to be prevented from rising. The outer sides of the cheek-pieces are tapering and engage with the tapering inner walls of the sides F, it being seen that when the cheek-pieces are driven up there is a wedging action of the same with the sides F, and thus they are forcibly pressed against the rails, the latter thus being most lirmly clamped without the use of bolts, spikes, &c.
In order to prevent return motions of the cheek-pieces or of the clamp, said pieces are formed with a seriesof vertical openings J near the narrow end of said pieces, which openings receive the pins K, which engage with the adjacent ends of lips (I, as in Fig. 2, and interlock said cheek-pieces with said lips, and consequently with the clamp, the eli'ect of which is evident. The lower ends of the pins Ii are split, so as to be prevented from rising and improper displacement.
In order to prevent longitudinal shiflingof the filling-piece (1, vertical openings L are formed in the same to receive the pins M, which also enter openings N in the base E, it being noticed that theinner side of the flange of the rail B is cut away, as at I", forming a space between the flanges of the two rails, through which the pins M. pass from the piece G into said base F.
It is evident that when the pins K are withdrawn the cheek-pieces may be loosened or moved to release the same of the holding actions of the clamps and be entirely displaced. 'hen the pins M are withdrawn, the lillingpiece 0 is free to be withdrawn. A stud L on the piece 0 enters the respective opening L in the webs for additionally locking said piece when so required.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a guard-rail clamp, a clamp having a side member, an inturned top member and a base member, a cheek-piece resting on said base member and embraced by said side and top members, said cheel piece having an opening therein and being adapted to contact with the side of a rail, means for imparting pressure to said cheek-piece laterally against said ,rail and a pin adapted to enter said opening and engage a member of said clamp for preventing disengaging movement of said cheekpiece.
2. In a guard-rail clamp, a. clamp having a side member, an inturned top member and a base member and a cheek-piece resting on said base member and embraced by said side and top members, said cheek-piece having an opening therein being adapted to contact with the side of a rail, the places of side contact of said clamp and cheek-piece being wedging and a pin adapted to enter said opening and engage with the member of said clamp.
3. A clamp for a guard-rail having a base, a side piece and a top inturned lip, a checkpiece adapted to be interposed between said side and the rail and provided with a series of openings, said side and cheek pieces having wedging contact-surfaces and a pin adapted to fit in either of said openings and engage a member of said clamp.
4. A railroad-rail and a guard-rail, a filling-piece between said rails, cheek-pieces on the outer sides of the webs of said rails, a clamp having side members adapted to wedge with said cheek-piece and forcibly hold the same against the rails, and means on said filling-piece and rail for interlocking said piece with said rail.
5. A railroad-rail and a guard-rail and a clamp therefor composed of a base on which said rails rest, sides rising from said base and inturned lips at the top of said sides, said lips embracing the upper faces of said cheek-pieces and said sides and cheek-pieces having wedging contact-surfaces, means for interlocking said filling-piece with the base of said clamp and a pin adapted to enter said cheek-piece and engage the adjacent memberof said clamp.
6. In a guard-rail clamp, a cheek-piece havpering sides, said sides contacting with said cheek-piece and the latter bearing against the side of the rail, a filling-piece between the rails and means for interlocking said piece with the base of said clamp, the flanges of the rails having a channel between them for the passage of said means therethrough.
7. In a guard-rail clamp, a clamp having a side member, an inturned top member and a base member, a cheek-piece resting on said base member and embraced by said side and top members, said cheek-piece being adapted to contact with the side of a rail, means for imparting pressure to said cheek-piece laterally against said rail, and an opening in said cheek-piece and a pin in said opening engaging the adjacent member of said clamp for preventing releasing motion of said checkpiece.
8. In a guard-rail clamp, a filling-piece, a laterally-projecting stud on said piece and a rail havinga recess in the side of its web, said stud being adapted to enter said recess and thereby interlock said piece with said rail.
