Un'rrni) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' LOUIS A. HAUCK, or orncmim'rr, onro.
' SWITCH FOB ELECTRIC TOOLS.-
Be it known that I, LQUIS A. Haven, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati. county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches for Electric Tools, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to electric switches and particularly to switches which are adapted to be used on portable tools or machines.
An object of this' invention is'the production of an electric switch which is particularly adapted to be mounted on portable tools or machines and which 'is provided with-means for insuring that the switch is always either fully opened or-closed.
It is essential mportable tools that. the operating switch be mounted in a place convenient'to the hand of the operator, and that it be so constructed that the tool maybe stopped or started by a slight pressure of the finger or thumb of the operator. These switches are ordinarily so constructed that the operator through carelessness may not fully open or close the switch or'may move too slowly, and may thereby cause injury to the switch itself or to the tool. by the arcing which, under such condition, may take place between the terminals of the switch. In
overcoming this defect of construction, I.
venting the switch from being left either partially opened or partially closed, by the negligence of the operator. The arrangement of the ap aratus embodying my invention is such t lat after an with a fragmental section of a portable to'ol.
operator has moved the switch to partiallyopen or close it, the'operating'device will either continue the motion quickly, or return the switch to its former position, and thereby either fully open or close it.
Referring to the drawings accompanying this application and formingpant thereof: Figure l is a'partial side elevation and partial sectional elevation of a switch embodying my invention and is shown in'connection i or machine. F ig. 2 is a sectional view along line A-A oflFig. 1 and discloses the con-- struction of theswitch proper. A

inclosed by an insulating casing or housing 7 on the opposite sides of which spring ter- I minals 8 and 9 are mounted. Each spring I chine. I
h p us many ofthe casing 7 and carries a metalliccontact iece 11' which, for a certain position one of which is rovided on the .frce end of each ternnnal. ach spring terminal is se-- I cured to theinsulating casing 7 by means of screws, or rivets 13 and so arranged that its casing 7 and contacts with an'inclinediface 14 of the plug 6. The 'contagi piece ll extends through the plug 6 and; is located at the widest portion of the plug. By movis mounted on the handle portion 3 of the 6 by means of a rod 17. Thepiece 16 is so mounted in the handle 3 that it presents each end to the hand of the operator, and is capable of moving longitudinally to'shift the fiber clotted position. A casinglS is provided in the handle portion .3 and incloses the plun or 19 which is forced outwardly by a coil spring 20 located Within the casing vided on the outer en of the plunger 19 and "-is adapted to contact with one. or the other oppositely. inclined faces 22 and'23, which are provided on the piece 16. The in 21- faces-by the-Jeoiled-spring. 20and the arrange'mentisjsnch that it will slide down a fiber or other insulating plug 6 which is 0 terminal is connected to a terminal wire 10 of the operating circuit of the tool or may 65,
6 is adapted to move longitudiof thep ugticonta'cts with terminal tips 12,
tip -12 extends through a'n'opening in the I ing the plug outwardly, relative to the cas mined amount, the contact piece 11 contacts e'tips l2 and 9b c'onsistsof a thumb or finger lever 16 which machine and which is connected to the plug 06 plug 6 either to the open or the 10C and behindthe plun er. ,A lug 21 is pro-" is forced. ' one of the inclined surfaces, move-the piece-- lug; 6-,-to'
16 and, consequently move the p I such a pesitionvaswill'either ful y open or close'the switch 5.
In the drawings the switch and the operating mechanism are shown in the fully move the piece 16 far enough to carry-the a ex of the inclined faces 22 and 23 past the p ug 21, the spring 20 will, by forcing the plun er '19 outwardly, cause the lug 21 .to trave relatiuely'of the piece 16, down the inclined face 23, and thereby move the plug 6 to its previous position. If, however, the
piece 16 is moved to such a position that the' apex of the inclined faces passes the lug 21 then the spring 20 will operate to force the lug 21 quickly down the inclined face 22 and to thereby move the plug 6 to the fully closed position of the switch. B this. arrangement the switch will so adjust itself that it'is yieldingly locked in either the fully opened or fully closed position and it cannot occupy an intermediate position.
consider to be the preferred embodiment of In accordance with the patent statutes I have illustrated and described what I now my invention, but I desire to be understood -that various modifications and changes may be made in the apparatus without departing from 'the spirit or scope of this invention.
What I claim is; v 1. An electric switch for portable electric .tools comprising terminals and a movable contact piece for making and breaking the circuit between the terminals, said terminals and contact piece being mounted in aprotected position on the body of the tool, a
thumb-piece capable of reciprocation, and
spring pressed means adapted to carry the thumb-piece from an intermediate position to one or the other of Its. extreme positions, said thumb-piece and spring pressed means .being mounted upon the handle of the portable tool,- and. means for connecting the thumb-piece and the. c'ontact piece.
2. An electric switch for portable electrictools, comprising .an insulating shell mounted on a protected portion of the body of the tool, spring terminal pieces mounted on said shell, a reciprocal insulating plunger within said shell, :1 contact piece carried b said plunger and adapted tomake and breah the circuit between said terminal pieces, and an operating device for said switch comprising a reciprocal thumb piece mounted on the handle portion of the tool, spring pressed means mounted in the handle portion for carrying the thumb-piece .from an intermediate position to one or the other of.
its extreme positions and means secured to said thumb piece and said insulating plun-f ger, for actuatin said plunger.
3. In a switch o bination of a shell portion of a portable tool, a'hollow tool handle secured in the shell portion, terminals mounted upon ther electrical tools the come interior of the shell portion, a movable contact piece upon the interior of the shell portion 'and adapted to make and break thecircuitbetween the terminals, a thumb piece projecting through the handle a' spring pressed means within the-handle adapts to carry the thumb piece from an interme diate position to one or the other of itsv extreme positions and a rod secured to the contact piece-and engaging the thumb piece at a point upon the interiorv of the handle.
