WIPEB FOR BOTTLE-LABELING HACHINES.
Patented Aug. Si?, 93.61.
Application Bled Narch 21910. Serial Ho. 848,829.
To all whom i8 may concern.'
Be it known that I, EnwARo EnMoLo, s. citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the boron h of Manhattan, county und Stute of New 'ork, have invented certain new und useful Imlovements in Wipers for Bottle-Labeling achincs, of which the following is a specification. I Thil-:invention relates to wipers such us are used in bottle labeling maschinen, for upplying labels to bottles. such a. bottle labelmachine being shown in my Patent No. ,501,dated June 1, 1909, and the objects of the invention are to improve upon the construction of such wipers, and increase their eliciency of operation, with simplicity of arts and cheapness of manufacture.
her objects of the invention are to provide wiper-strips which permit of n. large range of movement so as to conform to irregularly shaped bottles, further objects of t e invention being to provide means for preventing the wiper stri s from becoming entangled one with the ot er. n
Re erring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a. detail front elevation of a pair of wipers made accordin to the present invention spling a loo neck-label to the neck cf a tle, the operating mechanism for operating the wipers being a portion of the mechanism shown and described in m Patent No. 923501, dated June 1, 1909. `ig. 2 is a detail view of one of the wi rs in crowsection. Fig. 3 is a detail en view of one of the wipers. Fig. 4 is a detail bottom view of one of the wipers. Fig. is' a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a rtion of a bottle in I,position in front o one of the wipers. ig. 1s a detail view of one of the wi -stripa In t e drawings A designates the wiper which in the resent instance consists of an elbow-shaped uckle B one end of which is provided with a ide roller C- the other end of the knuclr e being provided with a recessed portion D in which are secured the wiper-strips E. The knuckle B is suitably pivoted la' means of a in F to a forked member in the 'usuelp manner, so as to rmit of freedom. of movement of the nuckle to adjust itself to the surface of the bottle.
In the resent instance the wi -stri E are m e of wires or smell of spring-brass, bent as shown in Fig. 6, the wiper-strips E being secured in the reed portion D of the knuckle by means of the in il, suitable pins J and K being rovided or limiting the movement and ho ding the wiper-strips in position, as well as lst# ing the spring action of the wiper-strips E` The wiper-strips E are preferably bent at their engaging ends in the shape of a small ring as shown nt M so es to present aroundcd surface to the fece of the label. The general shape of the wi r-stripe, in' the present instance, is a U- a one arm o the wiper-strip being a litt e shorter than the other. The wiper-strips E are als'o prof vided with a bent or humped portion bN which acte to prevent the en ende from riding over each other so entangled. The tangling of the wipexf' strips is very a t to happen when the'bottle to which the la el is being applied is of irregular form, which necessitates some of the wiper strips being held in a dierent lane' from the others es shown in Figs. 2 an 5.,
The whole neck-wiper device is d from pins v' which are attached to t e u per ends of the body-wiper su porting vers so that the neck-wipers mar combined motion as the body-wi e the same To this motion is added a third one b means of.
a stationa cam-plate e' whi acte on yielding ro lors v' at the lower ends of the neck-wiper levers, so that their upper ende are forced to make nn inward motion during their descending motion und produce the wiping notion on the neck-label by guiding the neck-wipers by their rollers around the bottleneck. The suspension of the noch' ed Il:
wiper levers from the body-wi1er levers il effected b means of suspending rode and c w ich are clamped to the pins e' means of s lit sleeves v?, as shown in Fig. and exten downward from said pins, car# at their lower ends laterally extending rackete c" to the inner ends of which the neck wi r levers v' are.pivoted intermediately o their lengthtg means of pivot pins v". It will be no that one of e neck-wiper levers is located hi er than other, as shown in F' .A 1, an the dsnspen ing rod e for the hig er one is shorter' than h the suspending rod ls of the other lever. Springs c are arranged between 'the upper ends of the neck-wiper levers and the suspending brackets o for the same, and serve weA to hold the yielding rollers v nt the lower ends of the neck-wi r leven. in rontnet with the cam-plnte. Ifile springs v" interpoaed between the wipcwknuekles and the wiper-levers serve tn bring the. wiperltnttcltlen back into'tbc former pmttton after the wiping operation is finihell, while springs v between the lower end-- nf the neck-wi r levers und pins nn the Shanks nf the yiel( ing rollers v impart n certnin exibility to the neck-wiper levers und their rollers.
vFrom the above deseriptinn it will be ieen that the wiper-strips E nre su enndrtueted that n great lunmmt of flexibility is provided for, whieh iermits of the wiper-strips, ll assuming a large range of movement su as -to adapt themselves tu a great variety nf irregularly shaped bottles. 'l'he wlperstrtps are also made of smull wire nr rods which' rmits of u larger number of wiperstripa or a given surfnet' thun is ut present lxisnible with wiper-strips sttch as shown in mv aforesaid pitent.
' `While the Invention hns been described with particular reference to the detuils of construction it is not to be considered as limited thereto, as many changes mav be made and still fall within the scope of the following claimt. l
l claim:
1. ln a bottle-lulwling lnuehine, u wiper provided with guiding menus und with n plurality ol' resilient wiper-strips euch of said wl fr-stri being formed of spring materia and being pmvided with means for oceaan "preventing mljzwenx wiper-strips from over- 'prmided with guiding lncnns and with n plurulity of wi|wrstrips eneh of said wiper- ,-trips= being nmde uf u strip of metal of appruxinmte U-simpe und having tm extension l'urxm-l h v bending the strip in the plane of mmen fur preventing ndjnrent wiper-stripe from nverhtpping eneh other.
4. ln n bottle-labeling machine, a wiper prmided with guiding menus and with a plurality of wiper-.strips each of said wiperstrips being nmde of n strip of metal of approximate U-hlmpe und secured at one end to said wiper the other end of each of laid wiper-strips being rounded, each of aaid wipet-strips being also provided with means for weventing adjacent wiper-strip! from over upping euch other.
In testimony whereof I have signed thia slwcifcntion in the presence of two anbacribiug witnesses.
