Be it known that I, IRVIN E. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valley View, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Operating Hose-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in valve operating hose reels, the object of the invention being to provide an improved hose reel in combination with an improved valve structure whereby when the reel is turned to unwind the hose therefrom, the valve will be caused to open, so that the water will immediately flow through the hose and permit quick action in the event of fire.
A further object is to provide a reel constructed so that a hose wound thereon may be quickly drawn off by a pull on the hose.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1., is a view in front elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is an enlarged View in section through the valve. Fig. 3, is a View in end elevation, and Fig. 4, is a view in front elevation of the reel illustrating the manner of winding the hose thereon.
l, 1, represent brackets which are secured to'a wall or other support 2, and provide alined bearings for the trunnions 4, of a spool or reel 5, to permit rotary movement of the latter. The heads or ends of the reel are provided with handles 6, to facilitate turning the same, and a stud or hook 7 is provided on the body of the reel midway its ends for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. 7
8, represents a water supply pipe, 9, a branch pipe, and 10, a valve casing secured to the branch pipe. This valve casing is provided with a valve seat 11, against which a valve 12, is normally held and is opened by the pressure of water. A stem 14, projects outward through a cap-nut 15, and is normally engaged by a key 16, in a frame 16, to hold the valve in closed position.

Thevalve casing 10, is provided with a suitable coupling 16, to couple a hose 17, thereto,
, communicating with a port 18, in the casing.
The hose 17, between its ends, is caught over the hook 7, as shown in Fig. 4. The reel is then turned until the hose is wound thereon, and the purpose of this manner of winding is that when a pull is applied to the nozzle end of the hose, the reel will be turned and the hose unwound.
The key above referred to, is in the form of a wedge, so that when it is moved into openings 19, and 20, in frame 16 it will cause the stem 14, to move longitudinally to close the valve, and when drawn out of the frame, the pressure of water will open the valve. This key 16, has a lug 21, at its free end, which lies in the path of movement of a pin 22, on the reel, so that when the reel is turned to unwind the hose, the pin 22, will strike the key and force it out of locking position, permitting the valve to open and a supply of water to flow through the hose.
A chain 23, is employed to connect the key 16, with frame 16, so that the key will not be lost when pulled out.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my inven tion and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a water supply pipe, and a valve therein, of a frame having openings therein, a stem on the valve projecting into the frame, a wedge shaped key in the openings in the frame and engaging the stem to hold the valve in closed position, a hose reel, and means on the reel for engaging the key to move it away from its holding position.
2.
